How to Prune a Young Pear Tree:
Pruning a young pear tree is essential for establishing a strong framework and promoting healthy growth. Here are some general steps to follow:
Timing: The best time to prune a young pear tree is during late winter or early spring while the tree is still dormant. This is typically before new growth begins but after the coldest part of winter has passed.
Prune Shape: Aim to prune the pear tree as a central leader.
Tools: Use sharp, clean pruning shears or loppers to make clean cuts. Disinfect your tools before and after pruning to prevent the spread of diseases.
Remove Dead or Diseased Branches: Start by removing any dead, damaged, or diseased branches. These branches can harbor pests and diseases that can spread to the rest of the tree if not removed.
Thin Out Branches: Look for branches that are crossing or rubbing against each other. Selectively remove one of the crossing branches to allow for better air circulation and light penetration.
Remove Suckers and Water Sprouts: Suckers are vigorous shoots that grow from the base of the tree or from the rootstock. Water sprouts are fast-growing vertical shoots that emerge from the main branches. These should be pruned off to prevent them from competing with the main branches for nutrients and water.
Reduce Crowding: If there are too many branches growing close together, thin them out to allow for better airflow and light penetration. Aim for a balanced distribution of branches throughout the canopy.
Prune for Desired Shape and Height: Consider the ultimate size and shape you want the pear tree to be. Prune to encourage outward and upward growth, removing branches that are growing too low or too close to the center of the tree.
Monitor and Adjust: Keep an eye on the tree's growth throughout the growing season. Pruning is an ongoing process, and young trees may require more frequent pruning to shape them properly.

A really straight forward, clear and overall great video on how to trim a pear tree!!
Thank you, great video..
Thank you, Gary. I’m not a very good plant mother, but I’m trying. This is a big help. Sounds like I can do it. 💛
My young pear tree this year had quite a growing spurt and developed 5 leaders so to say and I am having a hard time deciding which one to keep, given they are somewhat splayed out and none of them are now straight. Though one of them seems to be having some side shoot buds, while the others are meter long sticks. So I am thinking Im going to leave the one with side shoots even if it is crooked 😅
Great video ! I bought some trees from you guys and they are growing strong ! Much better than some other, locally (northern IL) bought trees.
Great video: simple and clear, no blabla.
Great video. I’m feeling more confident to prune my fruit tree from Stark Bros. 👍
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THE INSTRUCTIONS!
As other have said, a great video straight forward and covers all the points.
I’m glad you found it helpful!
Excelllent! But what IF. .I will band down just 4-5 upright growths ti force into the fruits buds? Instead of cutting down those new growth?
Thanks for posting and easy to follow instructions.
Glad it was helpful!
Super insightful
Thank you!
Oh no!! I literally pruned yesterday morning 😂
Very nice!
Great video. Thank-you.
Glad you liked it!
Thank you! Very good demonstration of how pruning needs to be done.
Very nice and beautiful ❤❤❤❤Thank you ❤❤❤Subscribed! New friend from Virginia ❤❤❤
Thanks for subbing!
Excellent video ....Thank You !
Glad you liked it!
Great job
I needed this information
Would you recommend in this situation to cut down most of central leader and keep it like a delayed open centered position ? So more sunlight and air to the tree?
Great video man cheers!
Appreciate it!
My Starks Burbank peach was loaded with peaches this year, I got to eat one before the groundhog got the rest. Doh!
Thank you! You have given more information than others I have watched, and very informative information. Again thank you.
Thank you
Can you prune a pear tree to an open center? I like the open center because it's easier to keep the tree short so I can pick the fruit without a ladder.
Hello! Thanks for the good video! Can you please tell me if I need to cover up the cut areas?
If it's pruned while the tree is fully dormant typically, no. You can purchase this sealer and use as needed on larger cuts or wounds. www.starkbros.com/products/tools-and-supplies/tools-and-equipment/ferti-lome-pruning-sealer/H145478?gad_source=1&gclid=Cj0KCQjwwMqvBhCtARIsAIXsZpYfUAFqTT1jsB_nsY97cNseiPU3PwhuUfzISDWAtBJsJnpeIIAw6DcaAmHmEALw_wcB
@@GrowingwithStarkBros Thanks for answer !!!)
Great video. I concerned about my central leader growing so tall but you answered it! Mine has already leafed out. Should I wait til next year to prune?
If the tree is already leafed out, it's best to wait until next dormant season. This tree was pruned in February in Missouri.
I have a question on another video you made, I want to spray horticulture oil and liqui -cop like your video but its mid-February now up to 70degrees and there are some small buds popping up. Why should I not or should spray now or just don't worry about it? My potted fig trees got what looked like rust last year
Thank you for any info you have.
Ideally Dormant spray should be applied when the trees are fully dormant with tight buds. Tight buds=perfect, swollen buds = hurry, open buds = too late, wait until next dormant season. There are some sprays labeled for rust treatment that can be used during the dormant season. www.starkbros.com/products/tools-and-supplies/pest-and-disease-controls/ferti-lome-2-n-1-systemic
what brand pruning tools are you using?
They are the Okatsune Pruners that all Stark Bro's Staff use daily. www.starkbros.com/products/tools-and-supplies/tools-and-equipment/okatsune-pruners
Can this technique be used for peaches, apples, and cherry trees for pruning?
This technique will work for apples, here is an apple pruning video. th-cam.com/video/QY-VF64s0ks/w-d-xo.html For peaches and pie cherries, check out this video. th-cam.com/video/YowuIs3Hcvo/w-d-xo.html
I'm new to tree pruning. I'm assuming this method would also work for plum and apple trees? Can you confirm?
