How to plant a fruit tree video tutorial
To plant a fruit tree, you need the right materials. A good stake, treated so that it will have a life of at least 10-15 years. It should be approximately 6 feet long, with a point at the bottom. A round stake is better than a square stake. You’ll need a tree guard, and some tools.
Try to plant the tree in December, January or February. If you plant in March, make sure that the roots do not dry out, and water the tree in well.
Plant the tree in the right soil, in a position of full sunshine. The soil can be light loam or clay. Don’t dig the hole too deep, and break up the soil at the bottom of the hole.
Then put in the stake. Place the stake on one side of the hole, positioned so that the prevailing wind tends to blow the tree onto the stake. That way, if the tie breaks, the tree is still supported. You can knock the stake in with a heavy hammer. If you have a drive-all, it makes the job easier.
Now we can plant the tree. Slide it out of the pot, over the planting hole, so that any loose soil falls into the hole. Don’t place it too close to the stake. Then fill the spaces around the tree with some quality compost. Shake the tree up and down gently, and make sure that all spaces around the roots are well filled. Then complete with the soil that you removed when digging the hole. The union should be at least 3 inches above the level of the soil.
Fasten the tree to the stake using a tie. Make an S-bend to give the trunk space to expand and grow. Use another tie to hold the central leader in an upright position. Ideally it should be as vertical as possible.
Protect the tree from rabbits, muntjacs, cats and dogs by putting on a good tree guard. Deer will need a specially high guard.
It’s important not to plant the tree in grass. You can do this in two ways. Either by manually clearing the weeds around the tree, for a diameter of about a yard, or by using well-rotted straw or hay to prevent the grass from growing. This has the added benefit of maintaining moisture levels in the soil around the tree. Make sure that the straw or hay is not touching the trunk, in order to prevent damage by mice.
Now that the tree is planted, remember to water it regularly during spring and summer. Check how it is getting on at regular intervals. A tree is a living organism, and if something is wrong, it will tell you by the colour of the bark, and its leaf. When the leaves start to fold, the tree is too dry.

How to identify apple varieties
มุมมอง 17K4 ปีที่แล้ว
If you planted the trees yourself, you know the variety. But if they were already there when you arrived after moving house, how do you know what varieties the apple trees are? You can narrow down the options, with a first separation between cooking apples and eating apples. Then look at the colour, shape, size and season of the fruit. You need a reference guide, such as the Fruit Manual by Rob...
Picking Comice, a late pear variety
มุมมอง 8K4 ปีที่แล้ว
3 of the late pear varieties are Josephine de Malines, Winter Nelis and Comice. Birds love pears when they are almost ready, and so Dan has placed nets over his pear trees for this part of the season. By means of regular pruning, it has been possible to keep this Comice tree to a relatively small size with lots of spurs in the lower part of the trees, facilitating harvest. Even now, with the pe...
How to make dried apple rings
มุมมอง 2.4K4 ปีที่แล้ว
Dan recalls his childhood experiences in Holland during the Second World War, when food became scarce and so people sliced and dried their apples so that they could be used as a source of basic nutrition all year round. The apples were cored and sliced, and the slices were hung on a string in a warm, dry place such as an airing cupboard. Dan demonstrates how to make dried apples at home using a...
Picking apples how to determine when fruit is ready to pick
มุมมอง 4.4K4 ปีที่แล้ว
This 3-4-year-old tree, variety Winter Wonder, shows good balance, with fruit distributed along the central leader, and down into the central parts of the tree. At the same time, there is good growth of new shoots all over the tree, showing that the root system is well established, and that the tree is already preparing the structure that will produce next year’s crop. Winter Wonder should be p...
How to pick apples - picking over - Red Falstaff
มุมมอง 2.6K4 ปีที่แล้ว
In this video, Dan shows us how to “pick over”, in other words, picking just the apples that are ripe. The tree is Red Falstaff, and the fruit shows great variation in colour, from the bright red of the apples that are ready, to the less-coloured fruit that needs more time on the tree. This difference in ripening time is caused mainly by the fact that fruit buds on one-year-old wood always flow...
How to apply a grease band to a fruit tree
มุมมอง 6K4 ปีที่แล้ว
At this time of year, there is a risk that caterpillars of insects such as the winter moth will start climbing up the trunk and the stake, laying its eggs in the bark which will then hatch into caterpillars next spring. These will cause damage by eating foliage and fruitlets. One solution is to apply a grease band to the trunk of the tree, with another on the stake. Apply tightly, and then tie ...
The history of the apple tree
มุมมอง 3.1K4 ปีที่แล้ว
In this video, Dan Neuteboom takes a look at the historical origin of apple trees. They may seem like a part of the traditional English landscape, but in actual fact this was not always the case. The origin of apple trees has been traced to Kazakhstan, and the Tian Shan mountain range, near the city Almaty. The so-called “fruit forest” is located here, on the border between Kazakhstan and China...

Summer pruning on Suffolk Pink
มุมมอง 1.4K4 ปีที่แล้ว
Suffolk Pink is an important early apple. To develop colour, sunlight has to reach the fruit, and so some vertical shoots have to be removed by summer pruning, cutting back to the lowest bud. Don’t cut the short shoots, 4-5 inches, with a developed end-bud, because these are ideal for next year’s crop - the end bud usually turns into a fruit bud. Open up the tree and remove any shoots pointing ...
Pruning pear trees in August and September
มุมมอง 11K4 ปีที่แล้ว
All trees have naturally different shapes: for example, Bramley and Blenheim Orange form big, round trees. Pears by nature tend to grow upwards, and so if they are planted close together, they easily go out of control, forming a pear hedge. Dan Neuteboom shows us some 15-year-old trees that have been kept to a manageable size by giving them the right input and respecting their natural pyramid s...
How to keep a greengage to a manageable size
มุมมอง 24K4 ปีที่แล้ว
Dan Neuteboom shows us a Cambridge Gage tree that is 15 years old and that he has succeeded to keeping down to a height of about 5 feet. Greengages are trees that tend to become large, and create large branches without any fruit-bearing furnishing. After blossom, observe the tree, and if there are strong shoots developing, wait until the bottom part of the shoots is woody, and then cut them off...
Suffolk Pink apples and their colour
มุมมอง 4514 ปีที่แล้ว
The effect of sunlight on helping fruit to colour up is familiar to everyone. Summer pruning is performed in part to enable light to reach the fruit so that its colour can develop. But this year, Dan Neuteboom noticed that another factor must be involved in colour development, in particular for the variety Suffolk Pink. By late August, the fruit was ready to pick, but much of it was far less co...
What to look for when buying fruit trees

Dan Neuteboom talks about what to look out for when buying fruit trees. A healthy tree is essential, but you can also look for characteristics that indicate a rapid start of fruiting. A comparison of several trees. Look out for the presence or absence of fruit bud when you are buying the tree. Take care with pest protection, particularly in years with abundant aphids. I usually buy ladybugs and release them on the infected tree. The aphids don't last long after release. The ladybug's usually stick around 2-4 years before they're gone. PS don't kill the babies as they are kinda scary looking. Not knowing they were ladybug larvae, I called the alligator bugs and killed them untill I found out what they were. These big vabies will eat many more aphids than the adults

I have wasps on drinking sweet nectar dripping down my plantain and I was wondering if they were pollinating the little flowers or destroying them for there sap either way I thought I'd better not get rid of them because they do some service to the bees for sure. i also thought birds and moths maybe pollinate too. Only problem I see with the wasps on my plantain is there's one really really big one that attacks the other smaller wasps and it will collect the liquid fly off for about 5 minutes come back and claim it's prize after shewing off the smaller hornets and wasps. This thing might be a yellow jacket...

Tying a tree with a sting like this does not let the trunk expand during growth. The portion under the grease band ends up significantly thinner than the rest of the trunk above. This creates a weak spot at the base of a tree. I did something similar and lost three fruiting trees to strong winds. They all snapped right where the banded portion was. So be careful with this technique.

I have a beautiful abundance of honey bees in my garden every year, I believe the bees became accustomed to having me around and would not attack or attempt to sting me. But halfway through the season I noticed wasps coming in and intimidating or bullying the honey bees away, and also flying at my face and attempting to sting me in my garden. Does this method also kill or trap honey bees? I only want the wasps gone 🥲
