When I was deciding between the Rugers and the 22/45 I chose the Browning Buckmark due to the more ergonomic angle of the Browning’s grip. I can’t be I’ve no one else has complained about it before in other reviews. The Buckmark just felt better in my hand, it has a more natural angle when aiming it. I highly recommend the Buckmark!
A well known design issue of the Buck Mark, is the two screws securing the Sight Base (plastic top strap). After firing a couple hundred rounds, those two screws WILL loosen, and sight base will be loose, the gun will start to jam. They give you two star washers, and you can certainly use blue Loctite, but eventually the screws will work themselves out :)
I have the Buckmark Field 5.5 with rosewood grips. I bought this 20+ years ago and it still looks and works like new. The only thing I would change is the front sight. My aging eyes do better with fiber optic sights.
I was seriously tempted to go with a 22/45 Lite for my first gun. My cousin bought one for his wife and installed a Venom red dot on it. It's nice and light, plus the tear down in beyond ingenious. Unfortunately, I wanted to be able to co-witness with the rear sights, so I found the Buck Mark Hunter (which, I think, is a recent model). It comes with a Crossfire red dot installed that co-witnesses with the rear sights, so even though it's a lot harder to field strip and reassemble, I'm guessing it's going to be a good way to ease into handgun ownership. Not cheap, though.
I love my Buckmark. Did the Heggis flip on the spring, and also had an overtravel stop screw installed on the trigger (by Heggis himself actually). The trigger is really sweet for a pistol of its price point.
Just bought mine today, it's my first gun and I bought it used from a local cabelas. Even came with a reflex sight just like I wanted, can't wait to try it out. Thanks for the review!
Bought a Buckmark Plus in about 1990. The walnut grips feel so great and look expensive. Takedown is easy, just two blade type screws on the top of the slide. Very easy. Feels like a higher quality gun than my MK 2'S.
Back in the 90s I used to go to a gun shop that had arranged to spend my allowance because they let me go shoot any gun I wanted as long as I rented range time. This was my favorite out of all and I've shot the Ruger the Ruger was good but not this good
Good review. I have now made my mind up it's a Browning. I'll get the same one, I did have a Ruger late 60s drive nails with. If I was able to see the head of a nail I'd hit it. But with the sights on this and how easy this is for cleaning and the ruger was not. I'll buy this. Tks
The Browning is a very nice handgun ,but I love my Ruger mark III Hunter .I put a 2x6 power Bushnell handgun scope on it and it is deadly on Squirrels,it is loads of fun to Squirrel hunt with a 22 pistol .
I love MY Browning Buckmark!!Its the best shooting pistol I have ever owned and I own guns!! Matter fact I have a Ruger Mark 2 Bull barrel and the Browning Buckmark out shoots the Ruger and I love my Rugers!!
I picked up a BM practical recently.Decided I was done with the Rugers. For some reason they feel and look "dated" to me. I had a MkII Comp slab side and it was ok, but man did I grow to hate the mag release , its horrible.. The brownings feel more like a real pistol to me and definitely have a better trigger out of the box and look
Their all good! I have a ruger MK1 and MK3. A browning micro buckmark, And a scoped 6" buckmark. 2 1956 high standards. All shoot so much better than any of these polymer glock, taurus, M&P, or sig 22s.
I have a target model that I used in competition. These are very accurate guns and they are well made. One can't go wrong with a Buckmark or a Ruger Mark III. A friend of mine used a Ruger in competition so both are great guns for target shooting. It really comes down to personal opinion.
+C MJ It's definitely a personal preference thing when comparing a Buck Mark to a Ruger Mark 3. I've fired both and for whatever reason, I had lousy accuracy when firing the Ruger, but fired the Buck Mark consistently into the center of the target from 25 yards. I'm thinking that the bull barrel on the Buck Mark seemed to be the primary detail that allowed me to fire the weapon with unwavering accuracy. It's incredibly stable and was firing el cheapo Thunderbolt .22 ammo through both pistols.
+Bill Dumas Yea in your case I would source that to the ammo before the gun. Ive had great success with both guns. But again I prefer the Buck just due to the features available and price points for those features. But with how out dated and inconsistent 22 is.. its a crap shoot every shot. Hell I have some boxes of 22 that only fire through certain guns. then the same brand and type, but a different lot will fire flawlessly.
+NoOneImportant556 I have no doubt that the crap ammo I was using when I was firing both guns had some influence on my results. It was an old brick of Remington ammo I was trying to use up. One thing I did find with my Buck Mark was that it seemed to shoot poorly with CCI Stinger ammo. They seemed to fly all over the place, and I haven't tried those again. Most other brands seem to be very consistent and I've had no further problems with accuracy using a wide variety of manufacturers.
Nice review. Picking up this exact model from jail in 4 days myself. Still don't understand the concept of a .22 not being good enough for home/self defense but to each his own. It takes time to open a safe , 10 well placed rounds should be enough to get me there if not then I deserve whatever happens. ;) Overall I really enjoyed the way this weapon feels in my hand and the balance and weight is pretty good.
JustLookN. Obviously a 22 will kill things, I've harvested many deer with a 22. The reason it's not a preferred self-defense round is simple knock down power. You can put a dozen 22 shells in an attacker, unless you hit them in the head or the heart they're not going to go down. The trauma caused by a larger projectile slows the attacker down quicker.

yes I was in Rural King yesterday and they had several bricks of 22 LR for sale .but I think this guy is in Calif.and I think they have a hard time getting any ammo there.
Might have mentioned how hard it is to initially rack the slide after a trigger pull. You can put a halo device on this to help with that. About $50.00. Simple installation.
He’s leaving out the mark four and five Ruger. The push of one button and it comes apart which is even easier than the Browning Buck Mark. They’re both great guns.
Scott Tilson you realize I made this video 2 years before the MK4 and MK5 were even available or in production yet right? MK4 wasn’t manufactured until late 2016. My video was made in Mid 2014... But I agree, both guns are great for different reasons. I personally at the time thought the Benchmark was better than the MKII & III available at the time.
Not much to learn here. I recommend Tandemkross videos for the Browning Buckmark. I recently replaced my Buckmark's firing pin with a Tandemkross product, using their video, which was superbly instructional.
Have the Buckmark, but if I were to say whats best between it and the MK II/III/IV, I couldn't say. The 22/45 I can't do. Just always considered it an afterthought of the MK II.
No, it's a cheaper version based off of the MK II with a plastic grip(albeit in a 1911 style, likely originally marketed as an extra style to compete with the Buckmark) and has an odd magazine. I know what it is. I don't like it and prefer the MK II/III/IV (Non millenials tend to just call them all MK II's)

BATTLEREADY It's got its pros and cons. The Ruger does take a lot of practice to take apart, but I like the fact that you don't really need any tools to field strip it. While being easier to disassemble, the Buckmark requires you to fiddle with the small screws, washers and the recoil buffer. Not really a big thing in a target pistol though.

I got it because I love the look and feel of the pistol, and don't regret it one bit after slicking it up and giving it the attention it needs with respect to mags, slide release, sear, (etc) had to "tap" (read: beat) out the mainspring housing with brass punches and a hammer, sharp points and corners everywhere you look. taking it apart is not nearly as easy as any other modern firearm. as for being a weak girly man, dude it's a 22 pistol, how insecure are you?

I've shot .22LR pistols for years but I really didn't get into them until about five years ago. I've had five (Mark 3 & 22/45 pistols) I've lost four to friends and relatives that insisted that I sell them my pistol(s) after I got them shooting like I wanted them. As far as I know, Army SF and Navy Seals units use Rugers with integral suppressors for combat missions. What we used to call 'night time' guns. the three allen screws holding things together on the Buckmark smacks of a pre-production prototype gun. I have a Buckmark which I got in a trade a couple years ago. It looks just like the one in his video. I use a spent case for a snap cap. This is really necessary since the firing pin will ding the breech face of the barrel. I know, I know, but the occasional dry firing does happen. Being brutally honest, the lesser sex appeal and the down range performance of the buckmark just doesn't have the folks beating down my door. The trigger on my current 22/45 Lite is just right as I bought it. A Tandemkross hammer bushing and slingshot mod is all I've done so far, so the 'cool levers' vs. the 'beastly buttons' doesn't really matter since I don't touch the bolt release while shooting. Abusing the counter person at dick's sporting goods has always persuaded them to hold a couple boxes of .22LR for me when it comes in (Don't try this if they are your husband or wife).
I owned the exact same model for 3 years. Recently sold it to purchase a Ruger MK 4. Not saying there was anything wrong with the Buckmark. I just find the MK4 far easier to shoot accurately. Just me - not a criticism of the Buckmark.

I state about 8 times that over several years I've shot this EXACT model, and several of the higher models of the buckmark, AND 22/45 models more than a few times. Yes THIS particular firearm was not shot during this video. Not sure if serious, the 22/45 has serious feeding problems. Clean up on the browning is a breeze, open the slide and clean both ends with a toothbrush, try that with yer Ruger with the closed 3/4 slide. Take the barrel off the BM and change it for a different one, about 50 different lengths, round, bull, square, short, long on & on. Or an aftermarket carbon, fiber sighted one. The Browing rocks over the Ruger, rent both, shoot em, U'll C

I have both the Buckmark and the Mark III but for pure plinking fun, I always bring along my Ruger Bearcat single action revolver.
I've had mine for 10 years at least. Its really good.

As a Range specialist for the DOD or a RSO at the local range...we never use the term play when talking about Firearms

Mine came with the Fiber optic sights..I remover the magazine disconnect ,And flipped the spring over for a 2 lb trigger..I really like mine..Subbed!

i bought a brand new MKIII and it's definitely a bad time. I got it because I love the look and feel of the pistol, and don't regret it one bit after slicking it up and giving it the attention it needs with respect to mags, slide release, sear, (etc)
had to "tap" (read: beat) out the mainspring housing with brass punches and a hammer, sharp points and corners everywhere you look.
taking it apart is not nearly as easy as any other modern firearm.

Look twit, I own three 22LR pistols, Ruger MKIII Hunter, 22/45 and a Browning Buckmark URX with scope. Taking down is no big deal, but it is easy like my Glock 19. What is your point? There is no fan boy just facts. Again Ruger has field strip and assembly videos, instructions. If you follow closely will not have a problem. However you are an idiot and will I am sure. I've shot .22LR pistols for years but I really didn't get into them until about five years ago. I've had five (Mark 3 & 22/45 pistols) I've lost four to friends and relatives that insisted that I sell them my pistol(s) after I got them shooting like I wanted them. As far as I know, Army SF and Navy Seals units use Rugers with integral suppressors for combat missions. What we used to call 'night time' guns. the three allen screws holding things together on the Buckmark smacks of a pre-production prototype gun. I have a Buckmark which I got in a trade a couple years ago. It looks just like the one in his video. I use a spent case for a snap cap. This is really necessary since the firing pin will ding the breech face of the barrel. I know, I know, but the occasional dry firing does happen. Being brutally honest, the lesser sex appeal and the down range performance of the buckmark just doesn't have the folks beating down my door. The trigger on my current 22/45 Lite is just right as I bought it. A Tandemkross hammer bushing and slingshot mod is all I've done so far, so the 'cool levers' vs. the 'beastly buttons' doesn't really matter since I don't touch the bolt release while shooting. Abusing the counter person at dick's sporting goods has always persuaded them to hold a couple boxes of .22LR for me when it comes in (Don't try this if they are your husband or wife).
I owned the exact same model for 3 years. Recently sold it to purchase a Ruger MK 4. Not saying there was anything wrong with the Buckmark. I just find the MK4 far easier to shoot accurately. Just me - not a criticism of the Buckmark.
Well just hope it was not a stolen gun you ended up with. Private sells are dangerous.

I state about 8 times that over several years I've shot this EXACT model, and several of the higher models of the buckmark, AND 22/45 models more than a few times. Yes THIS particular firearm was not shot during this video. Idk why people always have to look for one thing to pick out and literally ignore the rest of the video just to try and make a point via comments. Never fails.

This toy out shoots most 22 on the market....as for takedown you unscrew the rear top screw and the barrel removes with the slights......
This toy out shoots any rugers i have shot. Ruger trigger out of box sucks + the price!
Not sure if serious, the 22/45 has serious feeding problems. Clean up on the browning is a breeze, open the slide and clean both ends with a toothbrush, try that with yer Ruger with the closed 3/4 slide. Take the barrel off the BM and change it for a different one, about 50 different lengths, round, bull, square, short, long on & on. Or an aftermarket carbon, fiber sighted one. The Browing rocks over the Ruger, rent both, shoot em, U'll C
