This song has such meaning for me. When I was 20 years old I came home from Vietnam. The US Navy Band was playing this song for us as we returned in Norfolk Virginia. I had lost 23 friends and was wounded myself. When I was granted leave to go home, there was nothing other than the welcome home from my family. The general public seemingly despised us. Period. The only return I remember is the playing of this song. It moves me to this day.

So many Johnnys didn’t come home. And yes, our nation turned their backs on its homecoming ones. Think of the grief of parents and families of those who never came home, further made tragic by the indifference of their fellow Americans.

it's a shame that it even has to be explained. A long time friend of mine is named Gay and once in a while she meets an ignorant soul who doesn't comprehend having a name like that.

Yeah I know that, but wish it didn’t mean what they are trying to make it mean, and the rainbow now it’s a symbol of being gay, but it actually means God will never flood the Earth again.

The Irish song was about a man who comes back with no arms or legs, it was a song to warn against war.

I am guessing by the 'Irish song' you actually mean the 1867 English music hall parody called 'Johnny We Hardly Knew Ye' - originally played on stage for comic effect.

@@2ndSouthCarolinaStringBand That's okay . He sings great songs just fine. He just doesn't have that southern slang.

We might need new music Dave, for a new war. No one seems to know that it has already started.

The confederacy always followed the constitution. Slavery would have ended like europe over time peacefully. The union victory is why America is on its death bed now . Dixie is my homeland though in exile thousands of miles away.

Such BS if they had actually followed the Constitution the very first line in the Constitution says that all men are created equally in the eyes of God therefore and also the Bible condemned slavery so the Constitution condemns slavery and the Bible condemned slavery and yet they still insisted upon using slave labor and then even after slavery was legally abolish the South institutionalized racism Jim Crow laws sharecropping to further economically enslaved black people your comment is simply incorrect the fact of the matter is is that white people loved free labor and they would make any excuse to have free or close to Free Labor just like we're letting millions of poor desperate Brown Latino people into this country to enslave them as well the soil of this country is red with blood of the innocent and enslaved and genocide plain and simple no you had nothing to do with this neither did I I'm not mad at you nor am I seeking revenge or punishment I'm just stating simple facts😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
