Old Rosin the Beau

  • First published in Philadelphia in 1838, “Old Rosin the Beau” likely comes to us from the British Isles. The words and melody are ‘traditional’, meaning there is no known lyricist or composer on record. For the longest time, we naturally thought the title referred to the “bow” that is “rosined” to make it grab the strings of the violin. As it turns out, a version that circulated prior to 1838, actually was titled, “Old Rosin the Bow,” and the lyrics speak of a well-traveled and popular fiddler, now grown old and reflecting upon his approaching death.
However, the 1838 version, arranged and published by one J.C. Beckell, is the more familiar and often raucous drinking song. Because of its catchy melody and swinging waltz-time rhythm, the tune has been borrowed for many other uses: several 19th century political campaigns, among them notably Abraham Lincoln (“Lincoln and Liberty”); various folk songs (e.g., “Denver”, by the 1963 New Christy Minstrels; and more recently by our friend, David Kincaid, who applied it to a rebel treatment of “Kelly’s Irish Brigade”, on his “The Irish-American’s Song” album.
Not surprisingly, we learned the raucous drinking version and that’s the one presented here. Sing along if you like !

Am Polish too cousin, please do not bless the south. The average confederate fought to preserve the institution of slavery, with Alexander Stephens (Vice President of the confederacy) stating the reason for the confederacy was to create a government that ‘accepted’ the natural inferiority of Africans to white Americans, and that slavery would act as a teaching mechanism. Fuck the south.

I learned to play violin at age 8, so "rosin" and "bow" evoke ancient memories! Rosining produces a lot of dust. (I had actually wanted to learn the clarinet.) Although, unlike you, i was not very ambitious or proficient on the violin, i kept playing in school and then college orchestras, mainly because i loved music and was content to be a part of it. I also learned piano and guitar too but alas, never got highly proficient with them either! I'm far better at graphic arts without even trying. So now i don't play, i just listen to high quality music and am quite content!

During the 'arc' of our reenacting/performing years, we were fortunate to meet many wonderful, and colorful folks. One of the most wonderful such persons was Chip Breeze, once a very imposing Richmond, VA, detective and larger-than-life personality. He had long collected and studied 19th century 'stump speeches' (many of them comedic minstrel versions), and created a period character, Dr. Hezikiah T. Witherspoon, who would reenact these hilarious speeches at events where we and a few other bands similar to ours would appear. "The Lady and De Frog" is one of them. A “Stump Speech” traditionally followed the first act of a minstrel show.

Patriots = people who waged war on America
The confederates weren’t patriots. They were traitors. Everyone who supports what they stood for are traitors as well
