I met my hero, Ian, at Fitzgerald's (RIP) in Houston years ago. We had an animal rights booth upstairs. Fugazi wouldnt play a place that served alcohol because they wanted ALL AGES shows. Fitz complied, but tried to boot us and our booth for more space. I talked to Ian and he told the owner, if you boot them, we dont play. Epic HERO save!
I see people here being angry or disappointed with this interview because Ian was "boring" or "analytical". If you guys actually know how Ian acts, or any of his bands, you know that this is more of just him being him. Been a long fan of Minor Threat and Fugazi and this is a great interview.
DirtyWhite BoyzInDaHood not sure if this a troll. He has a 10 year old son and two bands with his wife who plays drums...Check out their project “The evens” and coriky
I like how Ian shrugs off the importance of some questions but then gives rly good insight hahaha... also amazing how nardwuar bounces back so effortlessly where any small remark from Ian would make me cry.
Just a couple minutes into this 2012 interview straight outta finishing the 2001 interview, I loved how organic that first interview felt from the amount of times Ian would either say "who'd ya hear that from?" or "you really need to ask *so-and-so* about that one". Even more so because Nardwuar would actually give up his sources, or cite where he'd read about it back in the 'zine era.
This is a great one. Hilarious to hear Ian griping about the sound and the size of the venue and then cutting straight to the video. Good job with those port-a-johns, Nardwuar!
Yaaa! Saw this guy all the time growing up, my dad being a friend and fellow punk musician. Being a kid going to Fugazi shows was... interesting to say the least. I never realized they were a big deal until I grew up.
The thing that gets me is that Nardwuar brings such gems and relics of underground musics past up, and many people he interviews almost always seem reluctant and treats him like he's almost bothering them. Meanwhile he is unearthing perspectives that fans of this music would love to know the intricacies about.
Perfect example of how if you get past the silliness and novelty of NardwuarServiette... and, if you actually play ball with him, he’s hands down the best music interviewer. Ever. Btw of course Ian MacKaye gives the best NardwuarServiette interview(s) of all time. Legend. 👏 🤯 🤘🏻
Love the discussion about the old GoGo scene in DC. Yeah, if I was in band, even if it’s benefit show, you got to at least pay us a per diem for showing up and playing an event.
You know, in the instrument documentary about fugazi, theres a clip where ians on the phone with someone after a show and he says "the guy who ran the show was a freak". I wonder if he was talking about nardwuar after the moodyville moo moo
Take care Nardwuar! I just discovered your channel and I really love the content! I also like your band -- the Evaporators! Thanks for uploading these amazing contents :D

@@ArbitraryLifestyle I think Ian just doesn't mesh with Nardwuar's interview style. Nard's style is to throw a bunch of references at a person and get reactions. It's very much input-output, not a conversation. If the interviewee doesn't gel with that, it sounds a lot like Nardwuar is just pumping out non-sequitur references and not trying to put a coherent story together about the artist. And Ian clearly doesn't like telling other people's stories (constantly saying 'ask them') which shuts things down more.
That's because Ian is also a hoarder, and he's very knowledgable about music just like Nard. If you think about it, Ian is just a cranky version of Nardwuar
Watching this now - amazing that Fugazi played a show at what I'm assuming is Harry Jerome in N.V., couldn't imagine this happening now. Seylynn Community Center was also great for a while.
i love how in every interview with Ian, Ian has this kinda equal admiration and annoyance with Nardwuar. Can tell he loves the guy but also is inside like, why are you like this.
ian ❤️ the way he says the word “doing” is my favorite ... “do - ing” with a real O sound ... he’s always said it that way since the early fugazi days and i love it.
Nick P yea it’s definitely a lie... he even mentioned in the instrument documentary. The problem is that Fugazi didn’t have much media coverage, so a lot of people made a lot outrageous claims... one of them being that they are “monks that live with no heat”
I used to like weed and beer and psychedelics and other peppy powders and smoked cigarettes at one moment in time while Fugazi was still around and their CD’s were on my CD player constantly. All that shit got old and boring and now I’m completely sober except for coffee. Still listen to Fugazi. That habit never gets old.
Good GAWD!!! SCREAM with Dave was a HARDCORE PUNK BAND!! The SCREAM was a METAL band that had Jihn Corabi that ended up in Mötley! The fact an record exec called and tried to Kaibosh that!! How lame!

Great interview! First time I've seen someone already have a gift
More proof Ian is one of the nicest guys. He doesn't want to take something he already has.
Ian mackaye has always kept it 100.
Every interview Ian has ever done he’s just like “why are you even interviewing me?”

Ian's memory is impressive. Don't do drugs kids!
Nardwar VS Ian MacKaye interviews should be a monthly thing now
These two have a unique relationship…
I love that Ian has this dry og punk vibe. It makes him seem rude subtly but he’s just a smart smart guy

Ian and Narduwar gel so well together. Almost like they have met their equal.
It feels so strange going from ian screaming about straight edge to just having a ncie interview with nardwuar, and being such a calm guy
