  • Will Shortz, the New York Times and National Public Radio puzzle master, thrilled nearly 700 people September 12, 2013 at Ted Mann Concert Hall on the University of Minnesota campus. He talked about the history of crossword puzzles, his favorite puzzles, and more before taking questions from the audience. Shortz finished up by leading a "Beat the Champ" puzzle contest that involved dozens of willing audience members. The event was sponsored by the Friends ... of the University of Minnesota Libraries.

The "Tom" jokes are called Tom Swifties, named for the protagonist of a series of books by Victor Appleton. Appleton had an aversion to repetitively using the word "said" so was very creative in finding alternatives. His writing style is parodied in these punny type jokes.
