The new Robocop looked like a guy in a suit. With the old Robocop you actually believed that he is a machine. Peter Weller did a fantastic job playing a machine.
Back in 1987 they didn't have good enough technology to make flexible joints so his moves where very limited making it feel more machine in 2014 between CGI and improvements in custom materials the suit is fair more flexible and as such falls into the uncanny valley where it looks to human without being human enough! Peter Weller said the Costume was super tight hot and claustrophobic as it required 3 to 5 people to put it on and take it off, They tried to limit takes to 5 to 20 minutes so he could re-hydrate cool down and go to the bathroom but sometimes he was stuck in that suit for 2 hours or more at a time that is the whole reason the helmet removes and they would have him covered in iced down towels

The original is just a masterpiece. A perfect blend of everything... that said, I managed to enjoy the reboot. Had it existed on its own, it wasn't that bad. I remember being excited when they brought back the old theme song for about five seconds, then feeling bummed when the rest of the score abandoned it. The scene that stuck with me the most was when Murphy saw all the mechanical pieces removed and said that there's nothing left. I give it credit for doing something different. Still, that first film is just amazing, even by today's standards
Like all remakes, they abandoned what made the original so great and just went with "Hey, let's make money on a former cash cow but make it more kid-friendly to appeal to a larger audience... and not totally publicly drive away the people who both are attracted to the media in the first place while drive away the same people who don't want their movie experience to have annoying kids in the same room while also not making social commentary that political hacks would over-react to".
Yes, that was one of the best scenes in the remake. I agree that it wasn’t a terrible movie. It was just a dull movie. I’m not against remakes, but if someone is going to take on a remake of a masterpiece they need to do something different and put a different spin on it. There are remakes that are as good (some better) as the originals; 3:10 to Yuma, Invasion of the Body Snatchers, the Thing, Cape Fear, the Fly.
Yeah the "remake" wasn't even that bad. And if I remember right I think it's more alternate reality. Considering a different company makes RoboCop in this one
I know for a fact the 1987 robocop will beat the 2014 remake because the 1987 had soul, it wasn’t afraid to be real and dark and had an amazing story and come back for Murphy. Seeing his death was really something else but seeing his come back to find his killers and who he is was amazing along with the social commentary from back then and the sound track and theme from the original movie was just heartfelt and powerful.
I had the privilege of seeing RoboCop at the theater opening week in 1987. I liked it so much I went back and saw it again a week later. When it came on video (and this was before buying VHS copies of movies was a regular thing in England), I bought a personal copy for the princely sum of something like 80 quid. Honestly, this movie opened up my young mind (I was 17 and barely old enough to get into see it) to the idea of satire buried within genre conventions. I've sought out those rare gems ever since.
RoboCop 1987 is a styling sci-fi action adventure and a masterpiece. The reboot will never beaten the likable originality in the 1980s. Great vid, JoBlo! 🎉😊

Indeed. The Supporting Cast is a draw because 1987 delivered an ensemble of interesting characters while 2014 delivered an ensemble of famous actors? As for Visual Effects, I can't even begin to understand the logic of the justification. It's a draw because 1987 depicted more real-world violence than 2014, even though 1987 had amazing effects that still hold up today (by the video's own description, and includes effects beyond "real world violence") while 2014 had generic CG and one good scene?
I prefer the supporting cast in 87 version with Ronny Cox, Miguel Ferrer, Dan O'Herlihy, Kurtwood Smith, Nancy Allen etc. I also prefer the 87 effects more because they are practical and not CGI. CGI should only be used when it's required.
9-year old me and dad saw the original movie uncut in the theater. I can still remember so many one-liners in that movie that me and my classmates had fun talking about...I can't say the same with the reboot, though.
Robocop (1987) gets the remote put down. Robocop (2014) gets a frantic search for the remote to see what else is on, and maybe beat the opening credits so I don't have to remember Ed Baldwin was a robot. Bye, Bob.
2014's came out during my birthday. Went to watch it as a Robocop fan and was severely disappointed. Why bother stuffing Joel in a suit if you're going to CGI it anyway? Dimwits.
Robocop 1987 is a guy in a suit that you see as a cyborg. Robocop 2014 is a guy in a suit that you see as a guy in a suit. Robocop 1987 deliberately cast a thin actor so it wouldn't look like he was just a guy wearing a suit, kept the visor on to make him look less human, and the removal of the visor also reveals the head is a robotic construct with a bit of human skin stretched over it for the face. Robocop 2014 put an actor in what looks like a knock-off superhero/soldier "armor", and then keeps the visor off to make him look more human and thus just a guy in a suit.
While I get that was the point of the 2014 movie (to "humanize" the machine), it missed the mark because it didn't emphasize the fact enough that he was a machine. If the suit was a bit more bulkier, maybe it would have looked better.
No surprises here. The original is simply untouchable. Another category where the original wins would be sound design. Murphys suit looked and sounded heavy and the Ed-209 sounds like a Robo-Dino on steroids. Excellent stuff 👍
Aye man, btw Robocop 2 is as good as the original. Cane, the hilarious mayor, the bad ass kid, the fact they turned Robocop into scraps, the finale fight was 🤯 brah the sequel was the 💩.
In the 1987 RoboCop I love the subtlety in that his voice sounds modulated at the beginning, but gradually softens until the end when he replies "Murphy" in his normal voice.

Robocop 2014 was like a short stack of plain pancakes with not syrup. My brother and I LOVE Robocop '87 but, he loves the sequels and was urging me to see '14 with him and even he couldn't hide his disappointment.

Keep in mind the 'near death' factor only applies to the 2014 version, in the original (1987) the protagonist was brutally murdered (died), a precondition to be resurrected. Just as the allegory Paul Verhoeven intended about a certain main character from a bestseller from the year 0.
Everything about the original is just so memorable. I don't even remember anyone's name from the remake aside from Louis, and that's ONLY because Louis exists in the original. OG Murhpy's near death is way more intense and, more importantly, much more personal. His gun is more iconic, where the new one is just a glorified taser. Even the way the original Robocop behaves like a robot towards the beginning and slowly regains his humanity is such a better feeling progression for the character. The new one's an alright action movie, but completely soulless in comparison. They could've at least kept the silver armor.

I'm not sure Robocop -87 actually shoots that many goons directly to death at the factory. Most of the shots seems aimed at their shoulders and he only shoots goons who fires at him first. They could die from bloodloss though from the high caliber triple bullets or from falling to the ground from the above floor or accidentally shooting each other directly after being shot in their shoulders by Robo. It's a bit like Batman's no killing rule I suppose. Not even Dick Jones is shot directly to death, he's screaming all the way down to the ground during his accidental fall through the window.
Multiple shots with that calibre? You can get shot in the foot, you will die if not immediately medically attended. A desert eagle handgun shot in a shoulder would rip your arm out, sometimes the shock to your body of the impact of that gun would give you a heart attack.
One thing that I really appreciated about the new one is that they had more exploration of the psychological effects of being turned into a cyborg. We didn't really see much of that in the original, though we did get some of that in the sequel when the new RoboCop versions kill themselves.
old 1 they just disabled areas of this brain. in the new one they someone hooked the machine to his hippocampus (kinda the amygdalae). i found this interesting because the machines put ideas in his mind as if he come up with them. perfect way to take advantage of the illusion of free will

Já o de 2014 é apenas mais um videogame qualquer desses de hoje em dia. O de 1987 ganha em todos os quesitos.
This was the movie that turned me into a cineaste. I was 5 when this was released, and I was 7 when I eventually saw it. Changed my movie going life forever. Robocop is not just an ‘actioner’ or a sci-fi, or even a futuristic movie of death and destruction. It’s a long close look at where humanity is going. The movie in a whole is so far ahead of its time that at 20 odd years ago, when the movie was released, it seemed far-fetched with the police uniforms and cars and society’s views, Military tactics involved in the film and a Police Force that resembles a Peace Keeping Army. These days though, it seems on the tilting point of dated due to being only a few years behind modern day. An absolute master class in film making, Verhoeven’s take on the future is a spookily realistic and well imagined view of our future. Something that the near-prophetic Paul Verhoeven is a master of. Weller as the titular Robocop is another master class on the acting scale. Miming robotic bird movements and bringing a human element to a creature made almost entirely of titanium is a wonder. How he does it, is legend. The suit itself is the reason his movements are so jerky. They were originally going for fluidic movements… but once the suit arrived and Weller spent 11 hours getting into it, they all realised it just wasn’t going to work. After a 4 day halt on shooting, Weller and his movement coach discovered that they would have to create a new movement, based on French Mime Artists from the 1920s. Weller has said that moving like that, is the most unnatural thing he has ever had to do. It had to be big and loud, OTT and hammy-theatrical. Rob Bottin’s creation of the RoboCop armour/suit and makeup, especially when Robo removes his upper mask, is also a wonder to behold. Even by today’s standards the practical effects look genuinely real and have yet to be bettered in any movie I’ve yet to see. What really made RoboCop special though was the quiet moments, where Robo is re-experiencing some of his past, his un-erased memories. It’s something that really brings the audience on a par with Robo’s torn feelings of duty, love, humanity and sheer programming. Mixed with the haunting soundtrack, the movie will live with you for a long time, if not forever. Add to that mix some awesome shoot’ em up action scenes, explosions, black humour and melting men in vats of acid and you’ve got a sure fire hit and the music by the wonderfully enigmatic Basil Poledouris blends everything together perfectly. From the thumping march, to the haunting theme that stands out most prolifically when RoboCop is walking around his old home, remembering his family, Poledouris nails the soundtrack for this movie. --- After a re-watched the remake of RoboCop yesterday, and I've twigged on something about the original that I never noticed before. I’ll get to the main thing in a moment, but for now I’ll just reiterate what I said in ther review I wrote a while back… in the remake, there are a number of problems with RoboCop himself. He's a regular guy, in a robotic suit. He knows who he is, what has happened... and has to deal with it. RoboCop himself, always referred to as "Alex", being a regular guy in a suit is a bland character played blandly by Kinnaman. He’s basically Batman. Maybe Iron Man? Iron Bat? Yeah, Iron Bat. With less character though. The main thing though is a very, very subtle character device that puts the viewer smack-bang into the mind-set of RoboCop himself that was totally overlooked in the remake. In the remake, you meet Alex Murphy's family. You get to see their struggle against the corporate big-wigs and their lawyers. It’s a bit like the revealing scene in the remake, where RoboCop’s outer shell is removed, allowing us to see his inner workings. In my review I called it a question we never asked, and an answer we didn’t need. What I’m saying is, we don’t need to see Alex Murphy’s family. Ok, they went the route of having Alex a more ‘human’ RoboCop and seeing his struggle to reconnect to his loved ones is probably called for in the remake… but, well… that just isn’t what RoboCop is about. In the original, RoboCop is completely mind-wiped (at least, OCP thought they had wiped his memory) and he has to figure out what happened to him… and why… and he has an internal struggle piecing together what he has been turned into... and... most importantly... you never meet his wife and son. All you see are flash memories of them. A quick memory here, a vague memory there... which allows RoboCop to piece together that he once had a life, that he was once alive. This disconnection between the viewer and Alex's family puts the viewer bang on par of the mind-set of what is left of Alex Murphy. He doesn’t know them and neither do you. In his own words, he even says "Murphy had a wife and son, what happened to them?" He has accepted he is no longer Alex Murphy... but that he once was Alex Murphy and he has to deal with and accept that loss, and move on with his, well, move on with his “life”. He then says "I can feel them, but I can't remember them" The other major thing with this is when Alex/Robo is talking about his family, mask off, in the factory where he died… his voice changes. When he’s, let’s say “RoboCop”, his voice is powerful, commanding, bold. While sitting with Lewis with his mask off, being “Alex” his voice softens. It’s quiet, solemn and packed with human heartache. This tells us that, after all he’s been through, Alex is to an extent, still there and he also knows that to the majority, Alex isn’t there anymore. This, is the major overlooked point of RoboCop in the remake, and a subtle character arc that I never spotted until that God-awful remake actually appeared.... the viewer not ever meeting Alex’s family, means the viewer understands RoboCop's viewpoint... and is connected emotionally, 100%, to his predicament. What stands out the most with RoboCop, the thing that people always remember it for, is the violence and the gore… but look just below the surface, just in between the horror, the gore, the violence and the gunfire… is, what I would call, a beautiful story of the human spirit, the enduring and endless boundaries of love and pure emotion, of memories and most of all, the story of pain and loss and dealing with that pain. Verhoeven, mastered these themes of humanity and mortality throughout the entire movie, and then in his unique, inimitable and peerless style laced the whole thing with the ultra-violence, satire and black humour; showing the viewer what they didn’t realise they wanted to see… and also showing the viewer things that they didn’t realise they didn’t want to see.
As a kid I enjoyed both Robocop and Starship Troopers as goofy action movies. As an adult I get to enjoy them as satirical comedies. Paul Veerhoven was a damned genius
Supporting cast has to go to the old one for me. The villains had me on the floor laughing at their actions and stuff they would say. I remember Lewis distinctly! And the police captain was funny as hell, like he was the uncle putting up with his nieces and nephews bs. Literally most people in the original are extremely memorable. The only reason I remember who some of the people are in the new one is because they’re well known actors.. that’s it.
I watched Robocop as a kid (the tv show). I could barely remember it. Watched the remake first and then the original. Little doubt that the original is in a league of its own. It shouldn't have been touched.
What was funny was watching this on TV growing up in the 90s with the family friendly dubbing. Every fuck became damn, and instead of "bitches leave" it was "ladies leave" 😆
I enjoyed the remake but it really was missing a series level of grit to it that made robocop 87 so amazing and unforgettable. They chose aesthetics over everything in the remake
I expected Murphy's dead pan humour to be part of this video, sadly it's not, which I think is an omission. The original's Robocop is a human that isn't allowed to be human anymore, creating this weirdly funny character. The remake allows Robocop to remain a human. This approach is way more in line with what we expect from life nowadays. But in the original the attempt (by OCP) to make Robocop purely into a machine really helps to sell the dystopian hellscape everybody is living in.
The one thing that bothered me about the remake, why did Murphy get to keep his right hand? When I see him as Robocop, and you see his biological hand, it kind of reminded me of "Silverhawks."
The idea was that Omnicorp wanted members of the public to support their plan to circumvent the Dreyfuss Act (putting a man inside the machine to make it legal). They therefore keep the right hand so that he can shake hands with people and they'll see the man as opposed to the machine.
I'm glad the obvious winner didn't just barely make it or be evenly matched until the end. Like it was even close. I finally agree with one of these. "I'd buy that for a dollar!"
Robocop 2014 is the exact type of movie everyone expected Robocop 1987 to be back in the day. We were all blown away (no pun intended) on how extremely good it really was!
Officer Lewis got distracted by the henchman’s dong and got knocked out. I think Murphy would’ve lived maybe if Lewis wasn’t so dumb. I would’ve gone after her first the second I regained my memories

I love seeing Red before he evaluated his life after a near death experience and decides to marry Kitty and become a family man. His strict parenting style is his way of trying to keep his kids from following in his steps. In my mind at least where Robocop and That 70s Show occur in the same world.
Tbf Jose Padillha has made some amazing work and is a great director Narcos, Narcos Mexico and now Kaleidoscope on Netflix. Makes you wonder how much control he had during production and with the script aswell. Even the cast is amazing in the remake, Keaton ( so close to birdman and his renaissance) Jackie earl Haley , Oldman even Kinnaman. Just a shame really with the end result.
Kinnaman had the exact same problem that Jason Momoa had with Conan. Both did the best they could but they were saddled by weak scripts, generic CGI, and overall boring pacing. I would not be opposed to seeing Kinnaman as RoboCop again but make it hard R this time.
Did you notice how much emotion does Peter Weller manage to portray just through his mouth? Most of the time his eyes were obscured behind a visor so I guess he had to be creative, but that I think just shows his skills. Maybe it's just me, but in a lot of scenes there is surprising amount of acting just by half of the face.
I loved it. He used his body, movements, mouth, and voice tonal changes to show Robocop. So often movies show the face, for the sake of actor ego and "audience has to see a face to be connected" mindset. If you play the role great and write it great the audience will imprint what they believe the character is going through using what they are seeing performed on screen.
"I'd buy that for a dollar" - to this day I still use that phrase and usually get all kinds of dumbfounded looks from anyone born after 1995-present. Best catch phrase ever!!!! Vaguely, and very vaguely at that, remember that 2014 "movie".
Emil, Paul McCrane has had some of the best deaths in film. Splattering across Clarence’s windshield and having a helicopter fall on him that he saw coming. Great stuff 👍🏼

Yeah I fully agree @@greenrobot5 the claymation has genuine character, and the rest of the Visual Effects are incredible, the suit, Murphy without his mask, the gruesome deaths, the city. Farmed out CGI doesn't come close.
As a "Gen-Xer", I definitely (at least mostly) agree with analysis of this movie standoff.... They're NEVER going to be able to outdo the movie magic and 'lightning in a bottle' outcome of the classic original! I say "mostly agree", only because I think the new one was probably shown a little bit too much love here! lol... BUT, I guess the new one DOES have SOME redeeming qualities. So, maybe it's just the bias of my youth, or my soft spot for cinematic nostalgia talking.... But the genuine article wins by a freakin' LANDSLIDE! 😁👍

Too many critics to claim the films are not pc enough.. The majority of great films come from back in the day.. with the odd exception here and there.. Oh, I wish the 80s would come around again and film makers could concentrate on actually making a film. Too much time is spent now, making sure it critically correct and pc..

TBF, 2014 is a good movie, I liked it. But the original is a masterpiece, nearly perfect in all aspects. Hard to compare, even people who don’t like it recognize it as unique movie. I saw it as a kid and it still got that “WOW!” effect on me. First movie poster I ever got.
I really didn't like the 2014 movie when I saw it in the cinema....but now I can take it for what it is, plus Joel Kinneman is always good on the screen but as you say, the original is a masterpiece and Peter Weller is just a delight to watch
@@dredd1981 yeah, I didn’t like the 2014 when I saw it at the theater too, but I knew I was expecting too much, like the original, so I gave it another chance and actually enjoyed it. IMO all actors did a good job. The original was new, fresh, something we’ve never seen… to me this is a huge advantage over other movies alike/reboots.
I also realized that they botched the drug lords death in the Robocop reboot. In the original, we got to see the drug lords end by getting stabbed in the neck while seeing his gang members go down one by one. Super satisfying too. But in the reboot, they just killed him off. No final words, no final confrontation. Just super fast and forgettable. You might as well cut that part out and the movie wouldn’t be affected by it. That’s how bad the reboot is.
Has anybody ever read the comics that led to the movie? It was satire like judge dredd, dark knight, transmetroplian, TMNT, etc. Style story format. If you havent read the books, you should. Great 80s nostalgia. Cheers!
Can I imagine Robocop *1987 coming out now? Yes, because it technically just happened in November. Robocop: Rogue City is a fantastic follow-up to the original two Robocop films. Like the films it follows it absolutely holds no punches. The game features the exact same kind of dark humor and ultra violence the series is known for. This is why it has taken off like a wild fire consuming all media that stand in its way. The game is a certified hit of mass proportions showing what people actually want to see and play. Sorry for this...we are headed for a post-woke society and I couldn't be happier about it....this is just more proof of this fact.
The second Robocop film if I recall correctly stated that Detroit was bankrupt. Which is funny as it happened in real life. The violence at one point wasn't far off. We have come back far from where we used to be, but Detroit is changing.
Robocop 1987 is a masterpiece. So its not a surprise at all.

The original is just a masterpiece. A perfect blend of everything... that said, I managed to enjoy the reboot. Had it existed on its own, it wasn't that bad. I remember being excited when they brought back the old theme song for about five seconds, then feeling bummed when the rest of the score abandoned it. The scene that stuck with me the most was when Murphy saw all the mechanical pieces removed and said that there's nothing left. I give it credit for doing something different. Still, that first film is just amazing, even by today's standards
Like all remakes, they abandoned what made the original so great and just went with "Hey, let's make money on a former cash cow but make it more kid-friendly to appeal to a larger audience... and not totally publicly drive away the people who both are attracted to the media in the first place while drive away the same people who don't want their movie experience to have annoying kids in the same room while also not making social commentary that political hacks would over-react to".
Yes, that was one of the best scenes in the remake. I agree that it wasn’t a terrible movie. It was just a dull movie. I’m not against remakes, but if someone is going to take on a remake of a masterpiece they need to do something different and put a different spin on it. There are remakes that are as good (some better) as the originals; 3:10 to Yuma, Invasion of the Body Snatchers, the Thing, Cape Fear, the Fly.

I know for a fact the 1987 robocop will beat the 2014 remake because the 1987 had soul, it wasn’t afraid to be real and dark and had an amazing story and come back for Murphy. Seeing his death was really something else but seeing his come back to find his killers and who he is was amazing along with the social commentary from back then and the sound track and theme from the original movie was just heartfelt and powerful.

I had the privilege of seeing RoboCop at the theater opening week in 1987. I liked it so much I went back and saw it again a week later. When it came on video (and this was before buying VHS copies of movies was a regular thing in England), I bought a personal copy for the princely sum of something like 80 quid. Honestly, this movie opened up my young mind (I was 17 and barely old enough to get into see it) to the idea of satire buried within genre conventions. I've sought out those rare gems ever since.
Peter Weller was amazing. Some movies can’t be remade, because they hold up forever.

Clarence was easily one of the best film villains ever along with Hans out of Die Hard.

As for Visual Effects, I can't even begin to understand the logic of the justification. It's a draw because 1987 depicted more real-world violence than 2014, even though 1987 had amazing effects that still hold up today (by the video's own description, and includes effects beyond "real world violence") while 2014 had generic CG and one good scene?
I prefer the supporting cast in 87 version with Ronny Cox, Miguel Ferrer, Dan O'Herlihy, Kurtwood Smith, Nancy Allen etc.
I also prefer the 87 effects more because they are practical and not CGI. CGI should only be used when it's required.
9-year old me and dad saw the original movie uncut in the theater. I can still remember so many one-liners in that movie that me and my classmates had fun talking about...I can't say the same with the reboot, though.
My Dad came home with the tape and proclaimed 'We have to watch this movie', and it was amazing.

Robocop 1987 is a guy in a suit that you see as a cyborg. Robocop 2014 is a guy in a suit that you see as a guy in a suit.
Robocop 1987 deliberately cast a thin actor so it wouldn't look like he was just a guy wearing a suit, kept the visor on to make him look less human, and the removal of the visor also reveals the head is a robotic construct with a bit of human skin stretched over it for the face.
Robocop 2014 put an actor in what looks like a knock-off superhero/soldier "armor", and then keeps the visor off to make him look more human and thus just a guy in a suit.
While I get that was the point of the 2014 movie (to "humanize" the machine), it missed the mark because it didn't emphasize the fact enough that he was a machine. If the suit was a bit more bulkier, maybe it would have looked better.

In the 1987 RoboCop I love the subtlety in that his voice sounds modulated at the beginning, but gradually softens until the end when he replies "Murphy" in his normal voice.

The fact the '87 visual effects drew with the 2014 remake's effects just shows you how on point Rob Bottin, Stan Winston *(RIP)* Phil Tippett and the effects crew were.
Robocop 2014 was like a short stack of plain pancakes with not syrup. My brother and I LOVE Robocop '87 but, he loves the sequels and was urging me to see '14 with him and even he couldn't hide his disappointment.

Keep in mind the 'near death' factor only applies to the 2014 version, in the original (1987) the protagonist was brutally murdered (died), a precondition to be resurrected. Just as the allegory Paul Verhoeven intended about a certain main character from a bestseller from the year 0.
Why do they remake amazing films? You have to end up doing not only better than the original but better than our nostalgic memories of the original.
Still love that scene in the 1987 robocott when he takes out that drug factory. But the 2014 version oh boy.
Everything about the original is just so memorable. I don't even remember anyone's name from the remake aside from Louis, and that's ONLY because Louis exists in the original. OG Murhpy's near death is way more intense and, more importantly, much more personal. His gun is more iconic, where the new one is just a glorified taser. Even the way the original Robocop behaves like a robot towards the beginning and slowly regains his humanity is such a better feeling progression for the character. The new one's an alright action movie, but completely soulless in comparison. They could've at least kept the silver armor.
My issues with the new one were the human hand and movements being too fluid, which both made him look a lot less like a robot.

I'm not sure Robocop -87 actually shoots that many goons directly to death at the factory. Most of the shots seems aimed at their shoulders and he only shoots goons who fires at him first. They could die from bloodloss though from the high caliber triple bullets or from falling to the ground from the above floor or accidentally shooting each other directly after being shot in their shoulders by Robo. It's a bit like Batman's no killing rule I suppose. Not even Dick Jones is shot directly to death, he's screaming all the way down to the ground during his accidental fall through the window.
Multiple shots with that calibre? You can get shot in the foot, you will die if not immediately medically attended. A desert eagle handgun shot in a shoulder would rip your arm out, sometimes the shock to your body of the impact of that gun would give you a heart attack.

One thing that I really appreciated about the new one is that they had more exploration of the psychological effects of being turned into a cyborg. We didn't really see much of that in the original, though we did get some of that in the sequel when the new RoboCop versions kill themselves.

This was the movie that turned me into a cineaste.
I was 5 when this was released, and I was 7 when I eventually saw it.
Changed my movie going life forever.
Robocop is not just an ‘actioner’ or a sci-fi, or even a futuristic movie of death and destruction. It’s a long close look at where humanity is going.
The movie in a whole is so far ahead of its time that at 20 odd years ago, when the movie was released, it seemed far-fetched with the police uniforms and cars and society’s views, Military tactics involved in the film and a Police Force that resembles a Peace Keeping Army.
These days though, it seems on the tilting point of dated due to being only a few years behind modern day.
An absolute master class in film making, Verhoeven’s take on the future is a spookily realistic and well imagined view of our future. Something that the near-prophetic Paul Verhoeven is a master of.
Weller as the titular Robocop is another master class on the acting scale. Miming robotic bird movements and bringing a human element to a creature made almost entirely of titanium is a wonder. How he does it, is legend.
The suit itself is the reason his movements are so jerky. They were originally going for fluidic movements… but once the suit arrived and Weller spent 11 hours getting into it, they all realised it just wasn’t going to work.
After a 4 day halt on shooting, Weller and his movement coach discovered that they would have to create a new movement, based on French Mime Artists from the 1920s.
Weller has said that moving like that, is the most unnatural thing he has ever had to do. It had to be big and loud, OTT and hammy-theatrical.
Rob Bottin’s creation of the RoboCop armour/suit and makeup, especially when Robo removes his upper mask, is also a wonder to behold.
Even by today’s standards the practical effects look genuinely real and have yet to be bettered in any movie I’ve yet to see.
What really made RoboCop special though was the quiet moments, where Robo is re-experiencing some of his past, his un-erased memories.
It’s something that really brings the audience on a par with Robo’s torn feelings of duty, love, humanity and sheer programming.
Mixed with the haunting soundtrack, the movie will live with you for a long time, if not forever.
Add to that mix some awesome shoot’ em up action scenes, explosions, black humour and melting men in vats of acid and you’ve got a sure fire hit and the music by the wonderfully enigmatic Basil Poledouris blends everything together perfectly. From the thumping march, to the haunting theme that stands out most prolifically when RoboCop is walking around his old home, remembering his family, Poledouris nails the soundtrack for this movie.

After a re-watched the remake of RoboCop yesterday, and I've twigged on something about the original that I never noticed before.
I’ll get to the main thing in a moment, but for now I’ll just reiterate what I said in ther review I wrote a while back… in the remake, there are a number of problems with RoboCop himself.
He's a regular guy, in a robotic suit. He knows who he is, what has happened... and has to deal with it. RoboCop himself, always referred to as "Alex", being a regular guy in a suit is a bland character played blandly by Kinnaman. He’s basically Batman. Maybe Iron Man? Iron Bat?
Yeah, Iron Bat.
With less character though.
The main thing though is a very, very subtle character device that puts the viewer smack-bang into the mind-set of RoboCop himself that was totally overlooked in the remake.
In the remake, you meet Alex Murphy's family. You get to see their struggle against the corporate big-wigs and their lawyers.
It’s a bit like the revealing scene in the remake, where RoboCop’s outer shell is removed, allowing us to see his inner workings. In my review I called it a question we never asked, and an answer we didn’t need.
What I’m saying is, we don’t need to see Alex Murphy’s family. Ok, they went the route of having Alex a more ‘human’ RoboCop and seeing his struggle to reconnect to his loved ones is probably called for in the remake… but, well… that just isn’t what RoboCop is about.
In the original, RoboCop is completely mind-wiped (at least, OCP thought they had wiped his memory) and he has to figure out what happened to him… and why… and he has an internal struggle piecing together what he has been turned into... and... most importantly... you never meet his wife and son.
All you see are flash memories of them.
A quick memory here, a vague memory there... which allows RoboCop to piece together that he once had a life, that he was once alive.
This disconnection between the viewer and Alex's family puts the viewer bang on par of the mind-set of what is left of Alex Murphy.
He doesn’t know them and neither do you.
In his own words, he even says "Murphy had a wife and son, what happened to them?"
He has accepted he is no longer Alex Murphy... but that he once was Alex Murphy and he has to deal with and accept that loss, and move on with his, well, move on with his “life”.
He then says "I can feel them, but I can't remember them"
The other major thing with this is when Alex/Robo is talking about his family, mask off, in the factory where he died… his voice changes.
When he’s, let’s say “RoboCop”, his voice is powerful, commanding, bold.
While sitting with Lewis with his mask off, being “Alex” his voice softens. It’s quiet, solemn and packed with human heartache. This tells us that, after all he’s been through, Alex is to an extent, still there and he also knows that to the majority, Alex isn’t there anymore.
This, is the major overlooked point of RoboCop in the remake, and a subtle character arc that I never spotted until that God-awful remake actually appeared.... the viewer not ever meeting Alex’s family, means the viewer understands RoboCop's viewpoint... and is connected emotionally, 100%, to his predicament.
What stands out the most with RoboCop, the thing that people always remember it for, is the violence and the gore… but look just below the surface, just in between the horror, the gore, the violence and the gunfire… is, what I would call, a beautiful story of the human spirit, the enduring and endless boundaries of love and pure emotion, of memories and most of all, the story of pain and loss and dealing with that pain.
Verhoeven, mastered these themes of humanity and mortality throughout the entire movie, and then in his unique, inimitable and peerless style laced the whole thing with the ultra-violence, satire and black humour; showing the viewer what they didn’t realise they wanted to see… and also showing the viewer things that they didn’t realise they didn’t want to see.
Usually these face offs are fair. Not today 😅

Add in the various iterations of the unrated cut of 87s Robocop and its definitely the hands down winner and champion 🏆 🥇 🏅 🙌

As a kid I enjoyed both Robocop and Starship Troopers as goofy action movies. As an adult I get to enjoy them as satirical comedies. Paul Veerhoven was a damned genius

Supporting cast has to go to the old one for me. The villains had me on the floor laughing at their actions and stuff they would say. I remember Lewis distinctly! And the police captain was funny as hell, like he was the uncle putting up with his nieces and nephews bs. Literally most people in the original are extremely memorable. The only reason I remember who some of the people are in the new one is because they’re well known actors.. that’s it.
I watched Robocop as a kid (the tv show). I could barely remember it. Watched the remake first and then the original. Little doubt that the original is in a league of its own. It shouldn't have been touched.

I expected Murphy's dead pan humour to be part of this video, sadly it's not, which I think is an omission. The original's Robocop is a human that isn't allowed to be human anymore, creating this weirdly funny character.
The remake allows Robocop to remain a human. This approach is way more in line with what we expect from life nowadays. But in the original the attempt (by OCP) to make Robocop purely into a machine really helps to sell the dystopian hellscape everybody is living in.
The one thing that bothered me about the remake, why did Murphy get to keep his right hand? When I see him as Robocop, and you see his biological hand, it kind of reminded me of "Silverhawks."

The idea was that Omnicorp wanted members of the public to support their plan to circumvent the Dreyfuss Act (putting a man inside the machine to make it legal). They therefore keep the right hand so that he can shake hands with people and they'll see the man as opposed to the machine.

I love seeing Red before he evaluated his life after a near death experience and decides to marry Kitty and become a family man. His strict parenting style is his way of trying to keep his kids from following in his steps.

Tbf Jose Padillha has made some amazing work and is a great director Narcos, Narcos Mexico and now Kaleidoscope on Netflix. Makes you wonder how much control he had during production and with the script aswell. Even the cast is amazing in the remake, Keaton ( so close to birdman and his renaissance) Jackie earl Haley , Oldman even Kinnaman. Just a shame really with the end result.
Kinnaman had the exact same problem that Jason Momoa had with Conan. Both did the best they could but they were saddled by weak scripts, generic CGI, and overall boring pacing. I would not be opposed to seeing Kinnaman as RoboCop again but make it hard R this time.

Did you notice how much emotion does Peter Weller manage to portray just through his mouth? Most of the time his eyes were obscured behind a visor so I guess he had to be creative, but that I think just shows his skills. Maybe it's just me, but in a lot of scenes there is surprising amount of acting just by half of the face.
I loved it. He used his body, movements, mouth, and voice tonal changes to show Robocop. So often movies show the face, for the sake of actor ego and "audience has to see a face to be connected" mindset. If you play the role great and write it great the audience will imprint what they believe the character is going through using what they are seeing performed on screen.

Visual Effects a “draw” 😂😂
CGI looks good but soul-less, while that claymation robot enemy from the original doesn't look that great by today's standards
Yeah I fully agree @@greenrobot5 the claymation has genuine character, and the rest of the Visual Effects are incredible, the suit, Murphy without his mask, the gruesome deaths, the city. Farmed out CGI doesn't come close.
As a "Gen-Xer", I definitely (at least mostly) agree with analysis of this movie standoff.... They're NEVER going to be able to outdo the movie magic and 'lightning in a bottle' outcome of the classic original! I say "mostly agree", only because I think the new one was probably shown a little bit too much love here! lol... BUT, I guess the new one DOES have SOME redeeming qualities. So, maybe it's just the bias of my youth, or my soft spot for cinematic nostalgia talking.... But the genuine article wins by a freakin' LANDSLIDE! 😁👍
Robocop made me laugh, Robocop 2014 made me laugh, but only in the scene where he was disassembled leaving head lungs, heart and one hand
Oh man I remember watching Robocop in the 80s as a kid a bunch of times. Good times, too bad we can't get straight up movies like that today. That would be amazing. "I'd buy that for a dollar" :D

The majority of great films come from back in the day.. with the odd exception here and there..
Oh, I wish the 80s would come around again and film makers could concentrate on actually making a film. Too much time is spent now, making sure it critically correct and pc..
@@paulradford4100 Now they just want to preach to us and have some sort of agenda behind it... I agree, they are nothing like before. At least back then they may have had some agenda, but it wasn't so in your face that it ruined the story.
TBF, 2014 is a good movie, I liked it. But the original is a masterpiece, nearly perfect in all aspects. Hard to compare, even people who don’t like it recognize it as unique movie.
I saw it as a kid and it still got that “WOW!” effect on me. First movie poster I ever got.
I really didn't like the 2014 movie when I saw it in the cinema....but now I can take it for what it is, plus Joel Kinneman is always good on the screen but as you say, the original is a masterpiece and Peter Weller is just a delight to watch
@@dredd1981 yeah, I didn’t like the 2014 when I saw it at the theater too, but I knew I was expecting too much, like the original, so I gave it another chance and actually enjoyed it. IMO all actors did a good job.
The original was new, fresh, something we’ve never seen… to me this is a huge advantage over other movies alike/reboots.
I also realized that they botched the drug lords death in the Robocop reboot. In the original, we got to see the drug lords end by getting stabbed in the neck while seeing his gang members go down one by one. Super satisfying too.
But in the reboot, they just killed him off. No final words, no final confrontation. Just super fast and forgettable. You might as well cut that part out and the movie wouldn’t be affected by it. That’s how bad the reboot is.

Has anybody ever read the comics that led to the movie? It was satire like judge dredd, dark knight, transmetroplian, TMNT, etc. Style story format. If you havent read the books, you should. Great 80s nostalgia. Cheers!

Can I imagine Robocop *1987 coming out now? Yes, because it technically just happened in November. Robocop: Rogue City is a fantastic follow-up to the original two Robocop films. Like the films it follows it absolutely holds no punches.
The game features the exact same kind of dark humor and ultra violence the series is known for. This is why it has taken off like a wild fire consuming all media that stand in its way. The game is a certified hit of mass proportions showing what people actually want to see and play. Sorry for this...we are headed for a post-woke society and I couldn't be happier about it....this is just more proof of this fact.

They had Robocop toys because all our Dad's came home and said 'Son, you have to watch this movie', and it was glorious!!

The second Robocop film if I recall correctly stated that Detroit was bankrupt. Which is funny as it happened in real life. The violence at one point wasn't far off. We have come back far from where we used to be, but Detroit is changing.
Funny I rewatched Robocop 2014 and told my wife it is a lot better than I remembered.
Robocop is a masterpiece. Remake it is plain silly. There is not draw. Original Robocop all the way.
