    James I started doing Keto last year and dropped about fifteen pounds. My gfr went from 52 up to 62. I now stick with intermittent fasting for 16 hours and only eat in the eight hour window. I will only eat low carbs and try to keep that number down to around 50 carbs. I am a diabetic, cancer survivor and heart patient. Unlike you I coded twice in the hospital from having neck surgery. Everything is good now. I trust in God and only he decides when I will pass on. The hairs on are head are numbered and their nothing we can do to stop it. I only want a good quality of life while I am here.

    Hi Guys! Loved this livestream! You covered so much in just an hour and a half 😳
    I was diagnosed with CKD stage 5 in jan. Have been WFPB since feb and GFR is now up from 8 to 10. I had also completely removed sodium and potassium for fear of having too much in my diet. Have so missed avocados, bananas and potatoes 😭 and stopped having nuts and seeds also which i love.
    Was nice to hear you confirm that they are ok to eat still.
    James you’re a true inspiration!

    I’m so very grateful to you James and Jen, you are providing a badly needed source of help and information for those of us whose nephrologists are completely indifferent to our requests for renal nutrition guidance. Mine keeps saying that it is too early ( Stage 3b) to worry about diet and will not recommend a renal dietician who could provide me with basic dietary guidelines.

    • @DADVICETV
      @DADVICETV  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for your support - and I'm glad to see you are proactive in your care. In my opinion, your Nephrologist is 100% WRONG. It is NEVER too early to look at your diet and a Renal Dietitian has the skills and experience to make a difference. One day Nephrologist will all wake up to the importance of nutrition. I'm lucky to have a health care team that sees that, and the results speak for themselves. Jen & I will continue doing these shows every Tuesday, bringing great information to help everyone kick kidney disease to the curb!

      @@DADVICETV So glad to hear this. I am having a nightmare right now with my nephr. At Stage 3, 1.5 years ago, he said no dietary restrictions, see you in a year. In a year I was Stage 4, and then 5. Now he still says no dietary restrictions, no renal dietitian. He wants me to do a biopsy and get ready for a transplant/dialysis. When I ask questions and request certain bloodwork (like albumin), he gets defensive. I have told him all about Dadvice, Jen and the other amazing RDs, and Lee Hull's book. He says it is irresponsible for anyone to say you can improve your gfr. I know I need another doctor, but they are so booked up here, or they are in the same group as he is. I SO wish I could have a supportive doctor who welcomes questions and is positive! It makes all the difference. I am starting to feel panic and thinking I am doomed for dialysis. I have followed eating for kidney health for this whole year, but I am totally on my own. I have had no luck finding an RD in this hospital system. I see they are there, but getting a call back is impossible. I'm sure I am making mistakes on over restricting and also on portion control. I've been using Cronometer every day for months and I seem to be in range. Hoping my doctor will let me do bloodwork one last time, since it sounds like we are going to be parting ways. Doing a lot of praying.

    • @DADVICETV

      Lowering Creatinine can be challenging. Some comes from the foods we eat - but we also create it as we break down muscle naturally. We can work to manage what we consume, but if you are very fit, you may find it difficult to manage due to the amount your body creates naturally.

      Dadvice TV - Kidney Health Coach 🤔... any advice then? Thanks

    • @DADVICETV
      @DADVICETV  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Looking at your diet is always a good first step, but diet typically has only a small impact. I know you are on a strict diet, but there may be something such as too much animal protein or not enough protein overall. The real impact for most people typically comes from medication or a change in their activity level. A very fit person who becomes more sedentary can see creatinine increase as the body breaks down muscle. Another possible cause is from further decline in kidney function. It goes beyond my skills - I wish I could help pin point an exact cause.

    James, how did they get you from gfr 8 to gfr 13? Is it something in particular they do in this hospital, or was it just a strict nutrition plan?

    • @DADVICETV
      @DADVICETV  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      While in the hospital I was on IV’s and a very strict diet. My health was critically bad when I was admitted. I had not eaten any nutrition for almost 2 weeks, got by on ice cold sports drinks (and even those would not always stay down). It took nearly a week in the ICU to get me stable at 13.

      Amy - I will make sure and bring up your question on the next live show (in about 2 days from now). In short the answer is: Eating a renal diet based on your labs just means eating a healthy diet and avoiding things which overburden your body. If everyone ate a healthy diet based on their own bodies nutritional needs, we would have a lot more healthy people.

    My gfr was 10 and my nephrologist put me in dialysis. Was putting me in dialysis too early?

    • @DADVICETV
      @DADVICETV  ปีที่แล้ว

      There are other factors than just your eGFR that determine the best time to start dialysis. The current recommendation most doctors follow is to manage symptoms using medication and lifestyle changes (as long as you are not at risk of other complications) and start dialysis around eGFR 5-7. Your eGFR can fluctuate, so it's possible to be a 10 today and a 7 this evening, so doctors look at the trend to determine the best time. I know this isn't a black-and-white answer and I hope it helps. I wouldn't worry that you started too early with an eGFR of 10 - but I would if it was 15 or higher.

    James, I was Diagnosed in 2009 and kept my Function Around Stage three for Ten years. I had a new Doc about 2 years ago that took me off Lisinipril because I had ONE potassium result come back slightly higher. Then he just disappeared, no call back to check on me, none of the diet info he was supposed to send showed up. I found a new Doc that put be on Losartan, and since then my GFR has dropped from ~30 to ~15 in about a year. Have you had any experiences with Losartan or info. I see articles online that say it can cause issues. Thx J

    • @DADVICETV
      @DADVICETV  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I used to take Losartan before I was diagnosed. One of the first things my doctors did was change all my blood pressure meds for ones more kidney friendly. It took about 1.5 months to find the right mix, dosages, and timing so that my blood pressure remained under control. You can see what ended up working for me at: www.dadvicetv.com/blood-pressure-medication To help my doctors out I took my blood pressure daily at home each morning (about 1.5 hours after taking my meds), afternoon, and then late evening before bed. I used a BP device that synced my results to the cloud so all my docs could see the results. They tweaked my meds almost daily in the start.

    Are medicines as important as kidney diet

    • @DADVICETV
      @DADVICETV  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes - you much manage your blood pressure and blood sugar and those may require medicine. The first step in fighting CKD is to stop further damage - and you may need medication from your doctor to manage the underlying cause to prevent further damage. Diet is one of the few parts you have 100% control over - and it plays a huge part in reducing the burden on your kidneys and treating symptoms.

    • @DADVICETV
      @DADVICETV  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      BUN is influenced greatly by the foods you eat. This is where a plant based diet can have a BIG and very quick impact. With a BUN of 35 you are just slightly high - if you are currently eating animal protein I would try cutting that out. A good way to test that is to cut out all animal protein for 5-7 days before your next labs and see where your BUN goes. You may be pleasantly surprised!

      It's cool you noticed this. Each video always get 2-4 down votes as soon as it's posted, and this all started when one of the largest Kidney Facebook groups banned me for being "too positive". Yelp, I was considered "too positive" for someone who had kidney disease. Ever since then there are several thumbs down within minutes of publishing a new video. But, being a positive person, I don't let it bother me. As a matter of fact, TH-cam doesn't care...they just want to see people engaging with the video. So the people who are hitting the thumbs down are actually helping increase the chance that TH-cam will recommend the video. :-)
      Have you had the chance to make any of the LIVE broadcast? I'm thinking of doing more shows with additional dietitians at different times to give people more options to chat live with a renal dietitian.
