Way back in 1961 I left school age 16. I was a bit shy and lacking in self-confidence. Before my 17th birthday I joined the Royal Marines as a junior entry. As soon as I entered the service I came out of my shell, and I had no problem getting focused on the job in hand.
This is what the Royal Marines did for me, they changed me from a shy teenager into someone who had a new purpose in life, and a goal to strive for.
I later passed the commando course and served for 10 years.
I have no doubt that a lot of young people actually need to be physically and mentally stretched. They need to be challenged to discover what they are capable of. It does wonders for the confidence and self esteem.

I can't believe the RM has a recruitment problem. It's an amazing life; the camaraderie, the travel, the experiences. It's good to see we haven't sold out and gone down the same pathetic road of advertising cuddles and tea bags that the army have, in order to get blokes through the door.

I’m from South Africa and since south africa is a part of the commonwealth, i am eligible to enlist. Nigeria is also apart of the commonwealth so you have a great chance of becoming a royal marine commando if of course you’re physically fit.

      Reuben,
Excellent mindset, great opportunity but remember it's extremely challenging.
Ensure you become a very strong swimmer before applying.
      Swim test for example.
Wrap 7kg to yourself, carry any metal that weighs 4 kg. Jump from a 3 meters board and swim 50 meters.
Drop the metal without touching the side of the pool and then tread water for 2 mins, all this wearing a loose Jean's and shirt.
If u can do that for a start, then u have a chance of becoming a RM.
      All the best.

We used to have PERI staff (Physical Education and Recreation Instructors) up until the 1990, then they got binned and the whole thing got farmed out to civ PSP staff. As a former Brt Asistant PTI with a diploma in Physical Education *which isn't much), I am mor qualified than most of those PSP staff. They haven't gt a clue. It's embarrassing. We should establish a Physcal Training Corps in the CAF as specialists (all former troops of course).

For one thing the Royal Marines don't like Chavs because they've got completely the wrong mindset and too much uncontrolled emotion. Either way I understand why you are saying what you are saying, but the Army shouldn't be 'targeting' anyone, and all should be treated equal rather than favouring white illiterates just becasue their parents didn't know how to give their child a good upbringing.

Brilliant advert, I like the way they show trained commandos not recruites. When I joined I didn't join up because off adverts I joined up because the pictures of paratroopers in Kosovo. I wanted to be one of them dogs of war. No matter what. And from what I have seen now are standards have bloody well slipped. Years off history in toughness to join certain regiments have dropped just to get numbers. We need to scare potential recruites from joining regiments and if they want it they will not allow them selves to be scared. And go for it. We dont want weak minded people, in are forces. Well atleast in certain regiments. (But it seems are goverment does as simple as that). No matter on race colour sex. If we put are old standards back to what they where, if you can pass them. Your in. Simple as that. Numbers are down on recruiting. Maybe it's because young men/ladys want to joine a hard core millitery unit not a weak unit. Make it hard and you'll get recruited lining the halls of the recruiting centres again. Give them somethin to be proude off. And even the muslims will still join. Let's be honest weakness is not positive. Dont make recruites look weak they trained and gave them selves make them proude goverment.

Get a bloody grip. It wasn't the Marines who took Mount Tumbledown, and without other highly trained units alongside these water babies, they couldn't or wouldn't survive.
