Still looks so modern, in fact it looks way ahead of it's time. I could spend hours just looking at it, awesome build quality, and they are reliable, once you are aware of issues to watch out for, preventive maintainence will enhance the cars reliability. This car still oozes image, no matter what age model you drive.
I totally agree. The last "pure" XJ style (until 2009: before the current design) was *FAR* more classy, elegant and distinctive than the modern one. I too wish they will re-launch that design again.
I have an ‘03 XJR. The thing that really puts a smile on your face is passing. Stab the accelerator at 60 mph and 90-100mph seems to come effortlessly and almost instantaneously.
I totally agree. I remember the day I purchased my 2004 XJR in Chicago. I had a Mustang try to run with me at 60 mph. I destroyed him when I hit the throttle. He caught up and just stared at it with a dumbfounded look. PRICELESS
Interesting how you look at a car that’s 2 decades young and call its electronics ‘silly’ given you were close enough to an infant when this car released. Back then you have to remember that the car was state of the art. You are spoiled by today’s gadgetry which in time too, will probably be considered silly by those yet to come when you are 20 years older. That will happen. I am happy you were honest about your pre-conceived notions of the brand and that the car has made you re-evaluate your stance. They are wonderful cars, I’ve had several, and they’re not as unreliable as is generally thought... Enjoyed the review...
I agree, I currently have a few X308 Jaguars and the controls are pretty straightforward and simple I think. He did acknowledge Ford did wonders for build quality and if he didn't like the Ford electronics imagine the Lucas/BL nightmare of older Jaguars.
Own a 2004 xjr, restored to like new, show paint coming in November. Yes, I will never recoup the investment. But since it will never be for sale again who cares. Best driving and fastest highway driver you can enjoy. I have converted 3 bmw and 2 Mercedes owners into jag owners without any complaints. Don’t get me wrong both bmw and Mercedes are excellent cars, but for the luxury and the driving experience you can’t beat it.
I remember the day that I purchased my 2004 XJR in Chicago. I had a yellow mustang with gt badging roll with me @ 60 mph. I hit the throttle and DESTROYED him. When he caught up he stared at it with a dumbfounded look. PRICELESS 🙂
I have lived in the UK from cradle to 46 years old. As a young lad i always aspired to own a Jaguar. Several pictures of series 3 cars later, I have owned several to this date, however i agree that the newer Jaguars have completely lost their looks. Why the hell must we conform to Euro Styling? What went wrong? Jaguar has always been the cat. Claws for headlights and haunches as quarter panels. I'm glad i have a 2001 XJR sat in my garage for the weekend blasts when i feel like i'm driving something of distinction.
My dear old Dad had the Mk 2 3.8 50 odd years ago, what a car!. I've owned X type 2.2 diesel for 10 years great value, always feels special to drive. Jaguars are very underrated which is great because they don't hold their value and you can get a great car for reasonable money.
I have a 1998 XJR and I love to take it from my home in San Clemente to bid on projects in L.A. Acceleration is effortless. Gas is cheap in the USA. It still feels like 370 HP after 171,000 miles.
The most beautiful XJ ever. I'd like to play with one of these someday, but for now I'm still very happy with my newer '14 XJL which is *hopefully* more reliable.
I love these Jaguars Fabuloos designs. I’ve had Jaguars all my life . If I had the choice if any car that’s the one I would have again and again. Beautiful design. The new cars have such little Soul ! 💖💖💖💖
My first car was a 1999 White Jaguar XJR and after two month the engine stated knocking and shaking. Jaguar of Jacksonville wanted yo charge me 15 thousand to repair it. After two years of trying to hold on to her I had to give her away because I couldn’t afford to fix her. 2007 I had two kids and crazy wife do my dream had to be placed on hold.
I’ve always loved the old XJR, both the original straight-six variant, and later V8. I could really enjoy having either. And likely will with how inexpensive they are now. And they’re a little more plentiful on the US market than I figured.
Not gonna lie, I can afford any car of my choice. At the moment I drive a Model X P100D ,$175,000 Tesla. I've had Srt8's, drivin lambos, Lexus, Mercedes, etc. One day I was shopping for a beater for my baby sitter. Found a xj vanden plas for 3,000. Thought it was a joke the first day. I fell in love! The car out handled my Dodge viper! I honestly feel that when it comes to the XJ Jaguars Jaguar not marketed enough, neither did the original owners did on the performance of the car. They have 0 body roll and hug the road like no other. The ride is much better then the 2001 Town car I had also. They are a hidden gem in so many ways! People are scared of them do to the maintenance crap. But it's worth it.
This is one of my favorite cars ever. Best exterior styling of any sedan, beautiful (and very comfortable) interior, far more agile handling than I've ever felt in a 4000 pound car, and the throttle response of the 4.0L is so much sharper than you'd ever expect from a British luxury car. The only problem that really bothers me is the competent but boring ZF 5-speed automatic. I really want to buy one of these some day (just as soon as I build a bigger garage) but I'd need to swap in a Tremec T-56 to be able to live with this car long term.
I have a black on black 2000 XJR and now in Dec of 2020 it still has only 73k miles on it everything original I paid 8k for back in 2014. I would never part with it under 5k for any reason. If any of you can pick these up for 5k or less then its such a sweet steal. There are websites with places still custom making performance parts for these 4 thousand pound rockets and your 370 HP for less then a few grand can become 440 HP plus in no time.
I’m sure you will Kevin. I’ve owned one for nearly a year now and I love it. It’s a three litre fifteen year old and I only paid a thousand pounds (1500 dollars) for it. Good luck mate 👍👍🇬🇧.
@Level 2es Hi Level 2es. I’m not sure because I’ve only ever driven a 3 litre but I should imagine the 4.2 is a smoother ride. I’m satisfied with what I have though. Cheers for asking 👍👍.
I like the XJ(350) Executive 4.2 litre V8. The First all aluminium saloon And an all British extremely well designed Engine. Ford put the money into the aluminium body shop at Castle Bromwich but nonetheless THE last all British saloon.
Love watching boys become men. I used to drive smaller cars. Had a mini Cooper s and a 240 nd then I bought a 2006 cls 500 nd never went back to small cars
This R version also has the stronger Mercedes automatic. And way bigger brakes then the lesser models. The next gen XJR is even faster and has all around aluminium body panels.
I'm on my 2nd Jag and let me tell you at 100k mile change out the suspension pieces around 80k if supercharged and you have a winner. The 390 horse and better is a beast however all of them are strong.
You think buying a higher mileage XJR is bad? I’m talking like 100-120k miles. I plan on running it into the ground so it will get work, but treated well. I think it’ll be worth the 6k. I want to get it to 200,000
I have a 99’ XJ8, I drive it like an XJR. Since my compression ratio is higher I can push her harder through gear changes. Would you recommend installing a super charger tho?
The AJ-V8 actually WAS designed with supercharging in mind. But that doesn’t mean you can take a normally aspirated version and slam a supercharger on top of it. With the supercharged version not only the engine but the whole drivetrain is different. Sell your XJ8 to a retired guy who doesn’t car about the power and look for a clean XJR on Craigslist.

This was the last proper Jaguar. Big big torque in these beasts. I love them
The 2004 version to 2008 are better.. you don't really hear of them going bad
@miyahtallulah they definitely are nice looking. I just don’t like how generic they are
Big Talk & that’s it.
They are shit.

I had a 2002 for 14 years, best car I ever owned - good job on the review
How reliable was it? Any major repairs?
I know it would never happen but I wish Jaguar would bring back this body style. The new styling looks generic, doesn't stand out.
That's y XKE's go for $50K
@@grievuspwn4g3 Wow, that's fascinating! Never thot of that because there was a million Muscle cars and yet now they're $30K +

I totally agree. The last "pure" XJ style (until 2009: before the current design) was *FAR* more classy, elegant and distinctive than the modern one. I too wish they will re-launch that design again.
Good to see a knowledgeable young man appreciate Jags!
I had a mid nineties xjr6. Straight six supercharged. One of the best driving cars ever built and brutal performance
The most good looking jag ever
I've had an X308 XJR for a few years now, and I've never had any issues with it
That’s awesome to hear. I need to fix my rear diff and supercharger knock before I can drive mine but I’m excited!

The 4.2 XJR with aluminum body with this distinct look in 2005 cost approximately $87,000.00 with extras like 20” Callisto wheels, power vents

They’re actually pretty reliable
Good video liked and subbed
i have a 96 xj6 (last of the pre-ford era jags i think) and it drives great
The last Jag with maximum waft and punch. In all black it also looks like an instrument of Satan, which is nice.

Good call. Actually recorded some footage under the hood but forgot to put it in! We’ll make sure to add that into our reviews moving forward.
This wasn’t the Ford era yet. They were still made with part from Mercedes, BMW, & installed in England.
"Nice" is one of the most meaningless descriptors on the planet.
