The S button basically just unlocks first gear on that gearbox, so you only really notice the difference from standing starts, but then you WILL notice that difference. In case you were wondering why you were nowhere near the rated 0-60 time. It was a wet day anyway so with the open diff its safer to leave S off until its dry. S mode tends to hold gears longer as well I find, so its slightly more sporty, I prefer to think of S mode as "normal" and normal mode as "winter" or "economy". It changes nothing with the adaptive dampers that this car has. I will say, on my XKR with new tires on the back with 18 inch wheels, I get no loss of traction from a hard start in S mode on a dry day.
I have an X100 XKR, so this with 2 doors. In retrospect I wish I'd got the four door. Way more practical, barely any difference in weight or even handling really. Same drivetrain.
Personally I think these cars ride and handle better on real roads with 18s than 19s, tho the montreal wheels do look gorgeous and you HAVE to have 19s if you have brembo brakes. For a daily driver, a standard XJR on 18s is probably ideal. Its a staggered setup with wider wheels at the back so you aren't going to be rotating tires in any case unless you put non-directional tread tires on.
another factor for the ride is the shock tower bushings/mounts which degrade with age and probably are flat as a pancake on this car unless they've been done in the past 5 years, regardless of mileage. Unless the car is stored on jack stands, they'll collapse. Its a bad design. I replaced mine with poly ones by energy suspension. Made a big improvement in ride quality.
These transmissions and engines are very reliable IF SERVICED regularly and competently. Replacing chains and tensioners is a must on these 4.0 liter cars and expect to budget $3k-$5k to have that done by a specialist, depending where you are in the country. Getting a higher mileage example is well worth it if its had all the little things done and there are receipts, they often make more sense than a low mileage garage queen that actually needs a crapload of maintenance done and you pay a premium for the mileage on top of that. A well cared for high mileage car is probably a better car overall, believe it or not, not just bang for buck.

I have a lot of great memories in X308s from years ago, including laying major mile-long [seemingly] rubber in my friend's father's XJR as teenagers. (Don't give teenagers an XJR, we did a lot a irresponsible stuff with that car). I owned a Vanden Plas for a few years and also rode at over 250km/h on the Autobahn in an XJ8. On the 98 I had the modified upper and lower supercharger pulley, larger Intercooler, faster Intercooler pump, carbon intake and lowered. Ca was an absolute beast until some guy in a Hyundai rear ended me and totaled my car. What you just pointed at below the leaper was the “growler”. These cars are really fantastic. I’ve since moved onto a Bentley Turbo R…but I love the x300 and x308. You should replace the tensioners and be careful with the Nikisil liners…but other than that…awesome car…very powerful.

The super charged V8 Jaguar vehicles are amazing to drive. As with any luxury power ride, put the foot down with respect. Why?, do not wear out your luxury beast before it's time; And the gas mileage will plummet in relation to the forward thrill and satisfaction. However, a supercharger and not turbo equals "instant high quality torque". In a beautiful interior. It's all expensive though, Lol. Have a great week!

The F-Type makes it difficult to be too hard on the brand because that car really is a shining star. But they've lost the edge when it comes to beautiful sedans that perform to compete with the big players. Jaguar should incorporate its motorsports history and elegant luxury to excite buyers and never rely on the name alone

That era XJR had a Mercedes transmission, the 5G tronic. It's prone to 2nd gear starts, unless the pedal is pushed hard to the floor. "S" mode may default to 1st gear starts, with slightly higher shift points, and slightly more eagerness to downshift. The transmission is adaptable, meaning that how you drive will adjust shift algorythms. If the owner is gentle on the gas, the trans will be less agressive, which appeared to be what your test drive revealed. Great review!

  • @jpadicecoffee9812

About time somebody reviewed another x308 XJR\ XJR-100. The model year late 2001-2003 uses more reliable metal tensioner than plastic, which is a major item to look out for on any X308. Aside from that, replacing spark plugs and ignition coils can help solve CES or dreaded limp mode. Aside from those, the late x308, I consider apex reliable powertrain Jaguar in that classy design form. BTW: after I've OD on BMW and still is my daily driver, the XJR R1 with CATS is my weekend sporty cruiser and re-hab project car. Got to use the J-gate to downshift 4th to 3rd gear on back roads, it will over take most cars and leave you smiling after 15-17mpg. Agreed, just a beautiful car and great visibility from driver side.

That is not very smart comparison. Rolls has always been big slow hulking car historically compared to Jag, with obviously more luxury. if you want car to drive you buy Jag, if you want to be driven you buy Rolls or Bentley. But still, despite of this Jag XJ has been car to go for British PMs and Royalty, you can see a lot of pictures Queen driving different Jags herself.

The xjr 100 has increased power from 363 to 390hp Bigger brembo brakes and the bbs montreal wheels. The color was only black on black and there was also the XKR 100 with the same specs. The s type from 2002(x202) is got significantly better than the first version (x200) and has all the same exact parts except the air suspension like the 2004-2008 Xj (x350). The x type is the most unloved model but in my opinion they are still nicer in everyway than a BMW 3 series or an Audi a4.

This car is still steel body. 2004 was the first XJ to be aluminum.
The sport mode starts you off in 1st gear, instead of 2nd. Also holds gears longer, faster up/downshifts and extends redline a little.
The 100's got two versions of the of the birds eye maple wood grain. The more common color, like the one in the video. But the rarer, was the grey wood.

The XJR6 sat the lowest of all these shape XJ’s and for me look the meanest especially with the XJ220 style wheels.
They carried more Jag interior parts from the XJ40 and for me are the perfect XJ. Plus the 6 is unburstable and had the option of a manual…
