I was an air cooled VW tech back in the day. I was one of those who specialized in working on the Wolfsburg editions of the camper style buses. I remember the older models with the gear reductions at the end of the axles and how slow they were. My aunt gave me one for free that didn't run and it turned out when I went to pull the motor the gland nut fell out and that's what caused to engine to not turn over. We used to consider the 67 VW as the premium year due to it's having a 12 volt system, a gas gauge, and just prior to the smog control starting in 68. Having to lean out the mixture and causing the air cooled engines to run so much hotter, it led to the demise of the original bug here in the states.
Fun fact: American and European safety standards are always different which is why the bumpers are different. It's the same story with the Lambo Countach; in order for it to be legal for sale in the U.S., Lamborghini had to add a front bumper not present on the European models. True story, bro!

My question is why not? If I had the disposable income I'd have a garage just as big, if not bigger and it would be filled with cars. Passion is a hell of a drug.

My first car was a 1974 VW bug. I bought it in 1991. A few months later I bought a 1967 Ford Mustang.
