I love that you pointed out that we should know how to hex, and that doesn't mean we ever have to use a hex, but we should know both sides of the craft. This makes so much sense to me.

I like how you said light and dark do not equal good and bad. I feel like that's an important part to stress- especially to beginners. The shadow side or the dark side is always frowned upon or shied away from because it's viewed as "bad" but as you said, nature is a balance of both. We can't have one without the other; both are necessary. Just as within ourselves, we need to embrace both the light and the dark.
I appreciate this book review, I really enjoyed hearing your thoughts.
I also appreciate what you said about sharing your personal practice online. For some people that works and for them I say, all the power to them. I am like you in that regard, I shy away from sharing too much of my personal practice as I think that it can be confused with being passed off as the right way or only way to do things and I dislike that concept. I think yes there are a lot of things that have strict rules or structures in place, which are necessary, but then there are also many things that as a practitioner you adapt and apply to your personal practice and life situations. And I don't think that that can translate into somebody else's personal practice, neither should it.

    • @theprosperitywitch
      @theprosperitywitch 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

I agree the way Olivia defines the differences between light and dark, and how they contrast good and bad is very important especially to beginners. And her personal life is also her own. So if she doesn't want to share it thats her own choice and I'm glad she keeps the majority of her practice to herself. It also kinda gives her a mysterious vibe lol

I need this book!!! My practice and my life revolve around death, not in an edgy or sad way, I just hold things like Memento Mori close to me and I find that there is a lot the living can learn from death and the dead. Death is just as much a part of the world as life is, you can't have one without the other and that should be honored not dismissed or ignored. On a personal note, new moons are WAY more comfortable for me than full moons, I was even born on a new moon!

I think just this section alone makes me feel cringe as I don’t know what the author means to cover. I don’t like the idea of sacrifice in killing anything living but sacrifice can mean many other things so I’m curious what that section is in more detail. Loved the tea references ❤️

Probably one of the better videos I've ever seen on TH-cam on the topic. So many people start out focused so much on the light that they demonize the dark. You can't have one without the other. They define each other. Our souls are made of both and if you ignore the shadow or darker parts of yourself, they will find a way to the surface.

I just stumbled upon your content, and the sigh of relief that left my chest, I don't even have the words for it. I am very isolated from other practitioners in my day today, so the only way I was exposed to others, and extra knowledge was through the internet, and so I thought I was alone. I thought I was wired, even among "my kind" so to say. And to find someone who, even if I am going off of fragmented information and general vibe, practice like me, or even just along the lines of what has always felt right to me is such a great relief for me. Thank you most sincerely

I feel this so much. I've pathworked many left-hand path traditions (Qliphothic for starters) and it's so frustrating to me how many books are wiccan based, strictly follow the rule of three, or gatekeep what's "good or bad".
LHP and darker traditions aren't evil like RHP practitioners seem to think. They're darker and force you to face things you may not be ready for, but they're not bad or evil.

This book is gold and your review/video is perfection (as always, love all your content). I already commented on IG about how this book (still reading) and The Crooked Path by Kelden made me emotional and cry for all the good reasons. It was a huge validation for me and my practice, because I always felt like I was outside the fluffy "angels and light" holistic community in my country (something I totally respect but doesn't represent me and it's everywhere). It's so powerful to discover and navigate through the dark moon current!. I'm coming back into witchcraft and taking a very slow approach to build my practice to my own needs, and this channel has been the most helpful. There's an oversaturation of hyper-posi content for pagan source materials in my area, and while that may work for many who don't like or don't want to include darker/more sedate philosophy within witchcraft, it's not a one-size-fits-all alternative for the rest of us.
I will keep my eyes peeled for this book.

Holy shit Olivia! I need to read this book! It sounds just like my own craft. I spent so many of my years struggling to get information like that because so many people just want to focus on the light side of things. The core of my practice for over 15 years has always been balance between it all. No true good and no true evil. Everything is one in the same. I grew up in the Catholic Church, but have also been around the practice of magic/witchcraft (an aspect of Santeria), which is common for many in the Hispanic/Latin community.
Despite me personally choosing not to practice, I watched some of your videos for educational purpose and believe you actually know what magic/witchcraft entails and coming from a place of knowledge. I’ve watched a few other videos from others and get the sense they don’t really know, or they haven’t researched all aspects of it. It comes off as too PC or sugar coated from them, not deep enough, as in not all there. That’s why I’m a little fascinated at those who say they don’t feel like they ‘fit in’ with the supposedly greater witchcraft community. As someone who’s seen practices with my own eyes, I know it’s not ‘glitter and rainbows,’ but at times can be dark, very dark. So I personally feel as if the trendy PC version of witchcraft is not that authentic, no offense! Yes, it’s trendy now, but the practice of witchcraft been around for probably thousands of years.

And yes there is a balance, and it is frowned upon within many Wiccan and Pagan communities ( cause they view it as "dark magick"), but in reality it's the most purest.

I totally understand your reasons for keeping that boundary between the basic practice and your personal practice apart, I very rarely share this side of my practice with other unless I know they follow a similar path as some people really feel the need to attack you for it. I have always believed in and followed balance within my craft and this book definitely helps nurture that other side. It is one I am glad to now have in my collection.

Girl… GIRL!!!! I am a beginner, still in my research phase I have a MOUNTAIN Of books I have picked up to read before I do any spells or magic but this book is literally the one I cannot put down! Like you said in the beginning all the other sources I find of witches , I noticed they’re craft was very “warm, and fluffy” and it didn’t really vibe with me, (not saying that I’m trying to hex or sacrifice or anything) but the craft I am drawn to is definitely like yours. From what I was able to relate to based of what you said! YOU are the only witch I binge watch videos from (and the green witch!) Because you are here for beginners like me, (which THANK YOU BTW ❤️) so being able to hear that you too feel the way I do at the moment makes me feel better about the craft I am learning about and just knowing that the “teacher” I look up to is also vibing with that craft 😂 thank you for all your videos and all the hard work you put into them. I totally understand why ur craft is private and I admire that as well! Keep doing you, I love you 💕 sending many blessings your way. 🖤🤍

I related so much when you said that your practice is not the fluffy, warm type of magick you see online, that you feel misplaced in the community. This community is so North-America/English-speaking-centered, and that doesn't have to be a bad thing, but for someone like me, who does not live in NA, whose first language is not English, that already puts a bit barrier between what I do and what I want to talk about, and what I can find online. I'm a practitioner that was initiated by my community, which is the first thing that differentiates with the majority of online witches who are self-taught, solitary, or even hiding their craft. I come from a culture where we never put the bread on its back, we shake the air before crossing a doorway, where the night of the full moon we stay awake for, because that's when our sheep will have their little ones.
Magick and the wildcraft were so ingrained in every little part of life that it becomes difficult to explain to people what my practice looks like. There are not really rituals, and certainly not ceremonial magick in the way internet means it. It's a craft of elders passing it down orally to the youth, where a sudden death is considered a great tragedy for all the teachings that were brutally lost. I know for example, from everyone I've talked to over the years, that we have a practice that is apparently exclusive to my country, where it's so reconise it's employed in hospitals and everyone has someone on call who can do this in their contact list. I'm One Who Can Take The Fire and it was passed down to me, just like so many other things.
No one here would call themselves a witch, I certainly don't. We're closer to the Druids, Vates and Bards of old, because we were one of the Celtic Nations and so our deities, which are essential to the craft, and our practices, go back thousands of years. Like you said about dead things and bodily fluids, that's something we use all the time. I was shocked to see the stigma I found online around using blood, your own or other types, using other fluids, using animal skulls and bones and so many more things. Even more shocking to me was the violent response to curses and hexes I found online, when it is such an integral part of our culture.
So yeah, I definitely relate to this experience of yours, and I'm intrigued by this book, although I'm afraid it'll again be very focused on NA/English folk magick, which is interesting too but it'll all I can see online and not much representation of my own culture or others' lol. Thank you for sharing this part of your experience, it really made me feel better about my own feelings of not-belonging. May Epona watch your steps and guide your Path!

I’ve been eyeing this one, I’m so glad you reviewed it. This sounds like a great book as I love working magick with what I have on hand (even if it’s a little gross LOL) and also have roots in Wiccan based structure (that’s basically what was taught in most books in the 90’s) but shifted to a more folk magick practice as time went on, it just made more sense to me. Agreed, balance is everything in magick and life! Thanks for another great video!

I completely understand and appreciate your need for privacy but I have been curious and how I’m intrigued by the contents of this book, it will definitely be my next purchase!

Me a lot. I know you don't know me but your very important to your viewers. We love you. Take care. Be careful on that pole, lol. Hugs

You actually gave the video on topics I was interested in for a WHILE. I'm into folk stuff more too, because I'm not a person who likes to be doing something because something told me too it's more like..oh I feel it's time to go forward and work harder on stuff. I'm a beginner. I love your philosophy on the darkness and good side of things, darkness and light are the none separation of things. There are good people and bad, Sun and Moon. I loved the video! Definitely gonna check the book.

People greatly underestimate to “potency” of body fluids such as blood when it comes to the craft.
I personally include a bit of myself when I make protection satchels because the blood of a witch is a potent substance.

I've had this in my wishlist and been back and forth on getting it. I think when I go to order more books that I will order this one and the Crooked Path book as well. They both interest me and I have read over the years enough of the normal Witchcraft and Wiccan books. I am enjoying some of the new books that have came out. Thanks for sharing your opinion on this book.

I’m really glad I clicked this video… I feel like it’s hard to feel comfortable with my own craft when so many other people seem to look down on things that aren’t necessarily “of light”… if that makes sense. I’m definitely getting this book!

I think you really hit the nail on the head with this one. Our cultural symbol set has assigned dark to "evil" and therefore something to be avoided rather than the true understanding that it's just something that's hidden from most normal view and requires an inward gaze to really understand. I work with chaos and trickster deities as well as hunting deities, and there's a lot to them that can be very violent in some views. But it's not cruel. It's the necessary violence of predator and prey that puts meat on the table or skins on our ancestor's backs. And I think as we've become so urbanized and disconnected from the land and nature and that aspect of deity in our life that we really don't know how to process it when we encounter it...or someone who walks that path between shadow and light.

I am a beginner practitioner and the topics that this book covers are the things that I have been looking to research ever since I decided to start doing witchcraft. It was hard tho to find anything good online about this so I'm really happy to see that there is indeed a book I can check out about these topics. I feel like this type of craft would fit me much more than what I am currently practicing, even though I do enjoy what I am doing right now, I just felt like there was that something that was still missing to make my craft feel more like my own.
The sad part is, that right of this moment, this book is unavailbable in my country so I'm gonna have to wait to buy it

I didn't buy this book based on a few if-y reviews on Amazon. I was going to purchase it alongside Planetary Magick, but ended up only getting that one. I'm changing my mind!!
Your reviews have never failed me in the past. When you say a book is more suitable for intermediate/adept practitioners, I come running! Even after 10 years of practice, it's nearly impossible for me to find a book that isn't just 'the usual' on repeat - perhaps with a little flare, but that's it. As a lifelong bookworm, it's frustrating, and I've found myself spending more time desperately scowering the internet than tucked away with a true book in my hands.
However, my favorite books that actually offer intermediate/adept information have all come from YOUR reccomendation. For that, I can't thank you enough!! 🥰🙏

I am really glad you made this type of video, as someone who has been Pagan since birth...people should also understand "darker magic". Not necessarily practicing, but understanding it to me is crucial. I have studied and worked with darker "entities" for mere experience, learning and understanding. But it's not for everyone...humans like to feel safe and there's nothing wrong with that (I suppose).
Also Olivia I am excited to see what newer content you create unrelated to the Craft!

Lovely footage. I like that you show us your outside self.. if you know what I mean. Would like to see more of that. The fluffy side of wicca has become stagnant and limited, and it's refreshing to hear someone talk about what the actual traditional craft involved more deeply.

I really appreciate this review as I feel very similar to you in the sense of not feeling very connected to most of the "magical community". Left and right people are shoving nothing but "light" magic into my face and "dark" magic is treated like it's completely taboo and that doesn't sit right with me at all. Like you said, they're not "good and bad", but people often separate them as if they are. I wonder if a lot of it comes from people wanting to make witchcraft seem less spooky to the "general public" or whatever, but it's important to acknowledge all kinds of magic instead of trying to dismiss so much of it as inherently bad or malicious- quite literally viewing magic as black and white instead of understanding the gray in it as well as knowing both sides are important.
I hope soon enough I'll be able to add this book to my growing library though! I am a slow reader but I do love to learn and am always eager to learn from a good witchy book that is actually more my speed. (So basically whatever you review as good lol) Also, I am always completely mesmerized by your nails and your overall aesthetic/makeup/hair. Huge fan :)

Really loved hearing you speak on why you don’t share your practice on here, it’s kind of similar as to why I don’t speak too much on mine on my TH-cam channel. For me it’s private and sacred between me and my gods and not to be shared out to the world. This book sounded so cool too I sent this review to my coven sister it sounds perfect for her practice xx

I need to get this book. Nature is all about balance. Yes, I like pink and sparkles and fluffy and cute, but I also love dark and spooky and spikes. I tend to have a black and white attitude about things, but I found out recently that’s a response to PTSD. I feel focusing on nature and what’s around me will help me deal with that and find that gray.

Great review and lately I've been... pulled towards shadow work. It just seems to require a kind of willingness to be vulnerable to make progress and I haven't really been able to take that kinda time. Still maybe there's some ideas there for me. OR maybe I need to rewatch your video on shadow work. Great work as always.
