To clarify, because some of you might have missed it: we DIDN'T say NEVER join a coven. We were talking about advice we'd give to our younger selves or beginners to not obsess over joining a coven early on. Covens are a great place to get knowledge and human connections, but can be a bad idea when you're learning basics and figuring out what you even believe in!

While I understand to a point, WITs (Witches in Training) do need room to grow and develop on their own the flip side is NO structure or guidance is just as harmful as no air to breath. There is a lot of benefit to heeding and listening to people who have been doing this for far longer then yourself. Unlike this post modern view of witchcraft that it is all make it up as you go along, that isn't the case. There is a lot of room to add, remove and modify to suit what works for you of course but there is basic foundations everything is built on that isn't "opinion". If one subscribes to it's all make it up as you go along and nothing at all is written in stone then witchcraft dosen't exist so much as a jumble of lose ideas. For it to be a thing we need a basic foundation of accepted understanding.
Now I am not saying if someone with a lot of experience under their belt says something you should listen without question. But generally speaking experience IS very helpful to new folks. I am not saying you have to should join a coven, but as a whole dismissing the benefits of even just joining a like minded non-coven group is helpful to most new people who may need some guidance and mentorship to get started on a path.
While you both may have had the personal tools to figure a lot out on your own I would suggest that is a minority not the majority of cases. Dismissing "elders" and their suggestions or advice which seem to be your underlying message in favor of figuring it all out on your own, while I understand where that comes from, I feel is far more harmful then good. And what causes WITs to have a much higher chance of having to reinvent the wheel or potentially pick up bad habits or techniques. Also I have seen it propagate ignorance of the history of the very craft these WITs are a part of as they only associate with other WITs. And while again that certainly can be helpful if it is their only source it can lead to a lot of backtracking for them down the road.
Now covens are fickle things and in my experience seems to be more bad ones then good ones. So I totally understand why you both had bad experiences and thus why you give the advice you do. However I feel it's a bit shortsighted.
For the record I am not a pro coven, they are the best thing ever bandwagon. I am actually mostly, a solitary. BUT I got my feet wet working with people far more experienced then me in public groups/rituals and public neopagan social groups. And the experiences shared and passed down to me was INVALUABLE in my learning.
Simply, I feel dissuading people from being part of social neopagan groups/elders is a disservice to many when starting out. I would suggest WITs look to get involved with local neopagan groups (covens aside) of mixed experiences as I did. It helps a lot on figuring out your own path and their stories help you possibly not repeat past mistakes or pitfalls and many times can give great insight and a good resource to bounce ideas off of.
My 2 coppers, keep up the great work!

I am incredibly lucky to have a husband who is of the the non witchy persuasion but is 100% supportive of me and my craft. He is always curious about things and asks about things from the reason behind the candles i've lit to certain colors and things i've laid around my altar and is always saying how he loves how good the house smells from the incense and it's just so nice. I don't have to hide. I can be myself and feel so completely loved because I can be open about my truest self. I hope everybody can find someone so supportive and will settle for nothing less.

As a witch of 26 years, it's weird for me to see younger people giving advice on the Work. I believe it is a good thing, though. I am happy to see the young taking up the mantle of the fading Elders, and appealing more, and less intimidatingly to their peers. What you ladies do is a pleasure to watch, and is a good work for others growing with you. It is a pleasure to share in your insights.
Tarot and dark mirror divination have always been beloved tools of mine. The dead are fun to work with, often funny, and have fantastic insights into life to share.
I 'grew up' (did my earliest learning) in a coven, taught by an Elder, and it was amazing. I have been in and out of covens throughout my life, and have had both good and bad experiences. Magic/magical religions are indeed very, very personal, but I believe that the experience of working with others has good merit, IF, and only if, they feel /right/ to you. Most people end up Solitary, and that is fantastic, as it truly is all about personal responsibility.

I run a coven and honestly I do agree with your statements on covens. Ours is eclectic and we constantly remind people that what we say is opinions and our version of what we do. But we offer places to start to those wanting and such as that. We wanted to offer help and opinions with ours but not have a full blown traditional one.

keshalee37 yeah, of course and don’t feel like that’s a bad thing at all! We all have to take our spiritual paths at our own pace and by our own way. Some people are meant for covens, others are not and that’s the beauty of the craft, it’s unique to everyone. Which is absolutely wonderful.

Holy shit. This is the first time I hear someone who was in a hardcore christian family devotee that became a witch, just like me. I was a priest leader, president of the elder’s quorum in the mormon church for so many years after my mission, and I was doing my craft in the closet since I was 15 till I cut the shit and left the church and came out of the closet as a gay man and recently I’ve been having this strong desire to come out as a witch as well. It’s very curious that I’m more afraid of sharing my spirituality than my sexuality with others.
I loved this interview! Thanks for your work! 🙏🏻🖤🕯

Hi, so, I'm pretty similar. I was also in the mormon church, had many callings including ward chorister and compassionate service committee member. I was in for about 5 years and left the church a few years ago.
While I was a member I realized I was bi & genderfluid (and was invalidated on a biweekly basis), after a while I just stopped going. I'm now an agnostic witch and much happier.

Savannah Bowdoin Seems like we are many. The LDS church can be an invalidating and violent institution to us, and the most difficult paradoxical part is that they sometimes are more loving and accepting than other christian denominations so it’s harder to realize that you are actually being invalidated and violented, making it hard to leave. But I’m happy that you did and you’re happy now! Same with me 🥰

When I was little, I had a whole collection of playing cards. And for every picture, I associated with a certain meaning. Then I started collecting rocks and sticks. Then I started drawing my favorite Greek, Norse, and Roman gods when I learned about mythology. I'd always stay up late to look at the moon and the stars, and say hi to all the bats flying around. Even my 2nd favorite Disney character was Dr. Facilier
How did I not notice this before?!? 🤣🤣

God. Male witch here. Lol! I don't know any female practitioners aside from a 5th grader who thought she was doing witchcraft by picking ferns and calling them potions. Ik it's make believe, so please don't criticize me about that. Most of my Mom's friends kind of have an alternative aesthetic, but they're not witches. Some do tarot cards and have occult interests. Some even use bones for art. But I'm the only hardcore witch that I know.

@Michael Doyle Nonono. The 5th grader did pretend like a lot of people do when they're young. My Mom's friends just have an aesthetic. I asked one if they were a witch, and they said no. So they are not officially witches. I'm so sorry if I offended you or anyone. I don't criticize other people's beliefs in witchcraft.

yay! 2 of my favorite witches coming together :D As a secret practitioner, I appreciate the knowledge you guys share and your authenticity. I also started with tarot and most of my practice focuses a lot on divination, though I've been studying and learning more things lately! It's very personal to me, plus I'm an introvert, so I'm perfectly happy being a solo witch.
Also, hearing that your craft can be simple and casual is so reassuring. Sometimes I forget that and feel like I'm not being "witchy" enough or practicing "how I should" when in reality, I'm practicing my way and for myself.

    WoW !
I honestly have no knowledge of how I came to be here . I was meditating and asking the Goddess to reveal what I might need to further my progress with my Tarot Card readings. Very strange , but then again what isn't when one begins on the path I have chosen ? I heard a very young , sultry , & attractive woman say : " Take my hand , I have someone I believe you would like to meet " . She was quite attractive. She had coal black hair , a little longer than shoulder length , she was approximately 5 ' 5 " , dark complexion ( maybe Latina , or possibly Italian ) and she had beautiful blue eyes , light blue , like a swimming pool. ( You see , this is what my mind wanted me to see. )
Then I landed on this page reading a post written by ' The Witch Of Wonderlust ' and ' The Half - Ass Witch '. Man - Oh - Man , what a day for a daydream :) . I have only known one Real Witch in my entire life , my 2nd. wife Wendy. She was gorgeous , physically , and her mind was razor sharp. She was a Master Class chess player and she held a Doctorate in Theoretical Physics.
Wendy ( my 2nd. Wife ) passed over two years ago today. Very sad day for me August the 31st . " Memories , of the way we were . "
I get a pass for telling attractive women that they are indeed Attractive. See : I am 73 yrs. old. Folks just think I am an old man howling at the moon. May be , I do like to howl :) . Wendy was 80 yrs. old.
I am really happy I found your site , I will watch all of your video's from now on. It has been a pleasure young lady.

Super fun interview. Just to add, a fun fact 'La Santa Muerte' is not a real deity, it's more like an egregor + mainstream belief that raised from criminal activity in Mexico. Latinos have a string believe, gives us a sense of focus and normally they take traditional saints to protect them in their 'work', but Santa muerte is a figure that came to fulfill the need of a proper figure to follow and the folklore of performing a family rooted business. ;)
On the other hand I think the same about covens,I like this current system of having a virtual coven: with meaningful exchange but no judgement, like the wonderlustcoven, and just acknowledging the witches around me, like that sexy wink you give when you know who they are, and arrive once in a while with a meaningful gift and they tell you 'wow I was really needing this' and you answer 'i thought so'... Just coexisting strong. ;). Hugs dears.

Keep in mind that while you CAN practice without other things like candles, crystals, herbs, etc. Your magick WON’T have the same power as it would if you did have those items. ESPECIALLY if you are a beginner witch and need to rely and pull from the energy of everything around you.

Hey, I was looking to join the Coven Discord server and I'm not sure how to join. I followed the link, accepted the request and read the rules page. After that, I don't know how to read all the channels. It also says to enter, use a command, but I don't know how to do that as I'm new to discord and confused. I also didn't want to DM any of the mods because it says in the rules not to, unless I've misinterpreted? So please, any help is welcome, I'd just like to join the server so I can chat with other like-minded people. ❤

I have to disagree with what you said about not joining covens, to an extent. It's not that covens will cause you to lose your own values or sort of take other people's opinions as right--it's that people themselves NEED to be able to be solid but open in what they believe and who they are. It's not a problem of covens, but of believing others over yourself and your feelings. If someone is easily swayed by the opinions of others, then that's the responsibility of the person, not the people swaying or influencing them.
It can also be a problem of practitioners who have very different values coming together because they feel they need to be with other practitioners, regardless of actual compatibility, rather than accepting it's not a good fit. I don't think covens as a whole should be written off. It would be like dating one person and saying other people shouldn't bother dating.

That's why we were saying for beginners! Covens are great resources for knowledge and human connection, but joining right off the bat, I've seen it be more problematic than do much good so early on. Definitely not anti-coven! haha

I'm interested to know who was telling her not to use the Santa Muerte cards if she doesn't work with Santa Muerte. If they were Mexican, I'd probably be inclined to encourage her to listen to them. Saying this because in my baby witch days, there were aspects and deities that I myself felt like I identified strongly with and thought I was honoring, but then later learned I was actually culturally appropriating and being disrespectful to assume I should have access to these various aspects, especially ones that were from closed religions --honestly cultural appropriation is already such a massive problem among witchcraft and pagan communities as it is. I'm not saying whether it's culturally appropriative or not, all I mean is that I hope she's not talking over the people from whose culture Santa Muerte originates, because that wouldn't be very honorable, imo.

Hi! I actually have discussed this with multiple people of Latinx cultures! Working with Santa Muerte is not closed culturally. I also am not working with Santa Muerte, but using a deck in honor of her. If you or anyone else is wondering more about this, I encourage checking out this articel www.mysticmysteriesllc.com/blog/common-misconceptions-about-santa-muerte-and-those-who-work-with-her
