I do similar. Only extra advice I would give is to put a spacer between the front brake calipers. You can easily get air in the system if you knock the brake lever on the way in/out, or pull it by mistake.
I take a garden weed sprayer with me that's full of water and cleaning agent to remove as much crud before placing back in the car (Can also be used as a pump when seating a new tyre) and also add a block to the front calliper, then parcel shelf back in and old blanket over the remaining parts of the bike that was on show, once the bars have been turned. Also a Focus driver
The parcel shelf and an old blanket are a good shout. There is usually something like that kicking around in my car somewhere. I think the focus has a lot of room compared to some other similar sized cars. Mine is about 12 years old now.
I use a a cheap waterproof large car cover on the inside of my car. I’ve attached bungees to the cover so it hooks up high in the corners of my car to prevent dirt getting everywhere. I wheel my eBike in backwards with the front wheel off and then fold the excess of the cover back over the bike to hide it from sight. Cheap, clean and safe
I'm lucky to have 308SW so my boot is massive. What helps me though is that I have a boot tray, I put the bike on the tray and then pull the tray from the front which slides the bike in with ease. I always recommend it to people who struggle getting bikes in & out of their boots.
Similar but i put a brake pad spacer thing in the front caliper and use thick fabric inbetween the layers of bikes and wheels. Saving up 4 a minivan and gonna put a jet wash in the back. Cant wait
I just had replace my mk3 mondeo estate. I put the bike in standing up with the front wheel removed. behind the drivers seat leaving loads of room for other stuff. I'm tall too so my bikes are big and my seats are back. After a lot of shenanigans because modern cars seem to favor styling over practicality i ended up getting a vw touran minivan. I mount the bike to a sheet of ply using the fork qr. It's pretty good if you can get past the dsg gearbox 😮. I too use a garden sprayer to clean the bike 😂
i got the sedan version of the ford, same using canvas cover below, took away the front wheel and slide my bike handlebar first. The only headache is the pedal have to at the backward position or else will get blocked by the car frame.
2006 to 2010 5 door Honda civic...magic seats, fold up so with the front while wheel off you can pop your bike in across the rear and still have a full boot available 👍
I find a piece of 6mm hardboard about 36" square with a thin strip of wood attached to one edge and then simply 'hooked' over the back of the back seat stops the bike putting holes in the upholstery on the rear of the seat. It also makes sliding the bike in and out a bit easier to, and anything long like bits of timber... I haven't got a cure for those dog hairs over everything....
I have an SUV that allows me to put the bike upright behind the drivers seat bars first. I lean it against the next seat and D lock to the Isofix with a black fitted sheet over it. I also have an old Hope DH wheel bag to keep the muck at bay. I can take 2 bikes like this but not quite 3 and their riders. Any more than 2 and I use an Atera Strada DL with 4 bike option on my towbar. Pretty secure with wraparound straps that lock plus Dlocks but all on show. Tilts and slides for boot access. Great vids thx
That sounds like an awesome set up. Next year I will be upgrading from my current car to something a bit more MTB friendly. I am keeping my eyes open for things that are suitable. What SUV do you have?
Yep. 👍 Luckily I have an Astra Estate, and, until I bought my first fat bike, I could load 2 MTBs with both wheels on! Also purchased a waterproof black 3x5 mtr tarpaulin. It covers the full rear floor and back again, so it hides bikes, tools, RC crawlers, Xmas prezzies, etc.
RockBro’s suction cup roof rack is a good idea mate, keep most of the dirt outside the car then, just have to put your front wheel in, but if you remove parcel shelf that would go in boot easily.
In my VW Golf 7 it's not necessary to release the front wheel: Turn your handlebar (including the frontwheel) to the left, nearly as far as possible. So that your front wheel points backward. Let's say turn it like 4 clock. Front first. hold your bike horizontal. (grab Saddle tube and horizontal tube and handlebar). The saddle points to the left side of your car. Now your front wheel fits in diagonal in the hole of the trunk. Place the frontwheel behind the front seats. Your hole bike is in the car. The frontwheel sits in the food room behind the front seats.
2020 Corolla Back seat down Large moving blanket from harbor frieght on the deck. 1 bike, front wheel off handle bars first. Smaller moving blankets between the bike and wheel. 2nd bike, Both wheels off Large moving blanket between bikes Second frame goes in through side door, sometimes with seat post out. Loose wheels separated with the smaller blankets. 3 bike challenge 🤦🏻 All wheels off Seat posts out (if quick release) Blankets between everything. Playing Tetris to make everything fit. I like using dummy hubs for the chains. Cover everything (1-3 bikes) with a navy blue twin sheet. I’ve found that color left lumpy works well for “camouflage” to hide vehicle contents. Even in daylight, just passing by contents don’t grab attention. When used with blankets, the unoccupied vehicle has the appearance that someone may be sleeping in the car. The car does have some scuffs from figuring out how to make large goofy puzzle pieces fit in a clown car. I usually only carry one. Having quick release front wheels makes this a quick process with only one.
If you don't have the bike securely strapped to any hooks or strapping points in your car, then your bike might smash you in your head or even fly across trough the windshield in case of a serious accident or even just an emergency breaking.
I have a tandem which I put on the roof of my car. I use a tow clip strap between the down tube and front wheel, otherwise the operation is impossible! Could you do similar between the down tube and front forks?
My method is open side door roll the bike in sideways. Car is citroen berlingo, bike is specialized amira xs . No taking off wheels, just slide door open roll in the bike . Granted car is wide and tall bike is short and small .
I do the same as you but do go handlebars first as the forks kinda hook down behind the passenger seat and stop my bike from moving around while I'm on the road.... Do need to do your tarp trick though. My cars a state and the Mrs moans about it all the time 🤣
Exactly the same car, same technique. Only difference is, I have a dog boot protector which is essentially what your tarp is doing, but is strapped to the contours of the boot when the seats go up and down! Seat covers on the front seats, sorted!
I do the same thing, but I put gym mats on top of the bike to put the wheels on (I have to take both wheels off to get them in my car 🙄 )....then you can use the gym mats to put on the ground when getting changed or putting the bike back together.
Funny you should post this, i have to get my full sus 29er to the bike shop for its first service and i drive a VW up, i have bought a rear car rack but i have a feeling the bike might be bigger then the dam car lol
@@bikeandbeyond I am going to try to do exactly that - Mrs has a VW Up and I’m going to try get Specialized Turbo Tero in it… wish me luck. I guess I’ll have to take both wheels off and prey 😮
I'd say it depends on if the car has a lip at the base of the boot opening. If it doesn't, like mine, you can load it rear wheel first by just having the wheel on the bumper / boot floor and rolling it in at an angle. But if it has a lip you need to lift the bike over, I'd probably try it forks-first too.
No way my muddy YT is going in my car 😂. I've a Thule towbar mount that's a little faff but keeps the crap on the outside. Great video on an interesting topic. After two weeks of absence, I was beginning to think we'd lost you! Happy trails and keep up the good work 👏
Have no fear I am not going anywhere. I trapped a nerve in my back and navnt been able to walk properly let along get on my bike. Normal service will result shortly :)
OR, you just put some old double-bed sized sheets after you collapse your back seats and just buy a hand pressure water pump to clean the bike before you put it in the trunk. The end! Cheers though nice video ehehehe!
I do similar. Only extra advice I would give is to put a spacer between the front brake calipers. You can easily get air in the system if you knock the brake lever on the way in/out, or pull it by mistake.
Yeah! I do the same. You can waste a plenty of time if you catch the brake lever.....
You can't get air in the system - it's a sealed circuit.
@@45graham45 all I know is I've had to bleed my brakes at least 3 times after mistakenly pulling the front lever when the front wheel was off.
@@45graham45 In this case you are correct! The problem is close the pistons with no pads installed.
@@protell1433 yep, as a stated in my initial comment. Hence the need to put something between the pistons when the wheel is off.

A proper wheel bag for the front wheel , stops the wheel damaging the frame
