HOW TO ADD BLOOM TO YOUR VIDEOS IN PREMIERE PRO (Updated Video in Description)

- UPDATED (correct) VERSION: • Add the “Film Bloom Ef...
Since Adobe Premiere Pro doesn't have a bloom effect to drag and drop, I made my own customizable solution that looks great. And today I'm giving you the inside info to do it yourself on any type of footage.
Over on Instagram/TikTok, people have been asking me how I make my footage glow. What they're actually asking about is this effect called bloom, which kind of puts a halo around light sources, highlights, and other lit-up sections of the frame.
But anyway, the point of this video is to help you give your footage some new life and to inspire you to try new things and take some risks with your editing and storytelling.
So thanks for watching, and if you've made it this far, thank you for your time.
If you could leave a comment saying "Wow Trent, this was so cool and helpful, you should definitely teach us more about the film look," it would mean a lot. (Just copy and paste that comment, no need to get fancy.)

loved the content, very easy to learn and well explained
Great to hear! glad to help! let me know if theres another topic you want covered!
Thanks bro
Those videos really help me❤
Glad to hear that
hell yea
Love the tutorial! Quick and to the point! Great intro as well.
If I may suggest something, at the beginning throw up the final clips with the effect to show people what you will be creating while talking, give us the tease at the final product, or use the effect on your intro footage to show us what we will be doing. Then at the end show the final rendered clips maybe with some music underneath or you summarizing.
overall, loved the content will be subscribing, can't wait to see what you do!
Fair point. I don’t want to be a sellout and edit the video just for views. But I get your points, and appreciate you being here! Make a new video on the topic to correct some things I’ve messed up in this video too
@@Trentorials I think you are doing awesome stuff. I am just a person who likes seeing the effect/result full screen so I can really see what I am doing and what the pay off is. I love your format and the way you tell a story through the video!
I understand. I’ll be sure to take that into account. Any other stuff you’re looking to learn? Lmk
its not about being a sellout lol... its just basic common sense specially with content creation people will not stick around on a trust me bro wait for end results.. time is money to most folks & with TH-cam watchers attention spans get real short. @@Trentorials

No worries! Thanks for watching!
Hey Trent! Awesome video and easy tutorial to follow. I have a quick question though. I had color graded my clips in the lumetri color panel, then I copied all my video clips, selected the top one and added luma key and gaussian blur. However after rending, all my color grading was gone... do you have any ideas on what could have happened? I even tried to add the color grading again and it is not reflecting any changes now on the clips.
Could you have your effects export selection unselected? Or maybe you have a global Fix mute on? Hard to know for sure as I haven’t had that problem personally. Maybe try coloring on an adjustment layer if you can’t find the problem. But I would suggest doing that last.
THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!
You're welcome! Glad to have ya here on the channel!
Amazing, you are genius
Thank you so much 😀 really stoked you found the video! hope you found it helpful
00:13 🎥 Filmmaker shares a method to achieve a cinematic glow effect in Premiere Pro.
00:29 💡 The technique works on various footage qualities and lighting conditions, as long as there's a source of natural glow to emulate.
01:54 🎨 Color correction might be necessary, especially for log-format footage, before applying the effect.
02:38 🎬 Duplicating the clip and applying a Luma key followed by a Gaussian Blur helps create the desired glow effect.
03:45 🔍 Adjusting the opacity of the top layer fine-tunes the intensity of the glow effect.

Thanks for sharing. I'm going to test this out! Do you mind sharing what serif font you're using in your thumbnails?
yeah man, the font is 'Mikela', not sure where I bought it or got it from, but thats the one, has three weights too
@@Trentorials I feel like that font in trending haha. I see it more and more on various vertical and YT content over the past 2-3 weeks.
Thanks 👍
Oh hmm idk. I’ve been using it for around a year now on ig and TikTok and then once I got serious about making content here I have been using it since.
nice tutorial man, I'm wondering what was the use of the "luma key" for? and as far as I know that if you want to add some kind of glow, you duplicate the layer and you add gaussian blur to the original layer not the duplicate, is there something I'm missing?
From my understanding the luma key selects only the white and brighter areas of the shot and only effects the Gaussian blur to that section of the shots. If that makes sense.
@@Trentorials after some reasearch and watching some tutorial it finally made sense to me lol, when you increase the threshold you get to remove the dark parts in the scene, when you increase the cutoff you get to remove the bright / white parts. good techniques man, much appreciated.
I actually explained this in the new video I posted about it. It acts as a mask, the luma key, like any other key effects.
It’s select the white gambit of the footage, and masks only that selected portion out.
you got my sub yessir
Stoked to have you on the channel. Let me know what videos you’d like to see and I’ll be sure to make Em
Hey man great video :)
Hey, thanks! Dope to have you here on the channel. New video soon 🔥
🔥
Thanks
Cool video champ!
Love the effect 🔥
One note though -> Your audio in the start was a bit off (the wind).
Only saying it because your video, effects, cuts etc are awesome, so i know you can improve this little part as well 🔥
Thanks for the tips! I am aware of the audio problem of course. I am working on being less of a perfectionist and taking the authentic and real problems and joys with filmmaking and just working on making more content. But of course audio is more important than video so I will probably buy the ride video pro soon with a good external preamp!
100% brother! Because your video is awesome!@@Trentorials
@@nikolajherlingthank you man! Means a lot more than ya think to hear that!
Right now I'm working with a Canon 60d and have been saving for a camera upgrade so I can shoot log/and or raw. I was looking at the bmpcc 4k, Lumix S5iix, GH7, Canon R6 and a couple others. Do you have any recommendations? The S5 is my first choice but the price is still high second hand and I don't want to wait another year for it to come down.
I don’t particularly like the canon r6, that’s what I have now… I have my own issues with it. I love BMPCC line (even the hard to find original BMPCC is amazing because of its Dynamic Range and it’s price)
I’d say the best option is the BMPCC 6k mk1 since at this point it’s the best value for the price. I can’t recommend lumix because I don’t have one, and I’d also add that the Sony-fx30 is pretty damn good too. A lot of options: what is your max budget? And don’t forget a good lens is almost more important than the camera itself
Finance through ADAROMA.
Thanks for the suggestions! My max I’d pay for the body only is 1000. I have some solid canon lenses that I’m planning on getting an adapter for so they fit on whatever camera I choose, so lenses aren’t so much of an issue. I think the biggest thing I’m looking for is at least HD 60fps with good low light and stills capability. That doesn’t really narrow it too much, so for now I’m just waiting and saving.
There’s actually a lot of good cameras out there that do 1080,60 for that range.
that is bloom, but not halation. Halation is a reddish orange halo, it tend to occur along the constrasting boundries of the over exposed areas, most often around bright light sources.
Yeah I’ve learned a bit more about the terminology of it since then, didn’t want to take the video down but will definitely have to make an update as I learn more. Thanks for the helpful comment!
yep, no worries, im learning too. Keep up the good work@@Trentorials
Combine this technique with a red color matte layer set to overlay blend mode for a halation effect. i.e. after making the gaussian blur highlight duplicate layer, add a new item/color matte on top, nest the two together as a sequence, set the red layer to overlay, set the nested sequence to screen. Play with the parameters of blur, opacity, luma key (or just curves) to however you want the effect.
@@Trentorialschange the title
It actually is achieved better with a channel blur effect. Combined with the bloom, effect I just taught.
Hi Trent, can you show your R6 video setting pls ? Or explain on the comments pls !
Hey. What type of settings are you trying to know?
you should explain what LUMA KEY is and what it does. this is just really showing off something you learned from someone else actually.
watch the updated video.
@@Trentorials nah, i'm done watching your videos. as a tip, you could've just added some captions to describe what LUMA KEY is, instead of making us watch another video.
bro it isn't that serious. there are loads of tutorials out there teaching things, for free. i'm sure you'll get the answer your looking for somewhere else.
Just 2 things:
1. It is actually Bloom effect, not Halation. Halation is a phenomenon only possible in film, because it's fisically there. Of course you could recreate it in digital but it's different from Bloom. Bloom is the natural glow things have and film just shows it naturally. You could increase this effect by using a mist filter (both film and digital). Halation is like a cromatic aberration that appears when film is exposed to a very contrasty scene in a non remjet film.
2. This technique is great, I have it used myself. But when you are editing a big project, it kinda lags. You can hide the track but sometimes you need to see it to verify some effects. I have tried nesting them but it's the same, it lags a lot and some effect are not applied which is weird.
But anyways, it's a great tip if you're on a budget.
Hey brother. I appreciate your comment. I corrected this misspoken label in a new updated video. Technically halation isn’t possible digitally since it’s a chemical reaction on the film. But in terms of digital, it’s the best got lol
great
Thank you so much! Please let me know what other videos you’d like to see!
which font u r using in this video?
can you tell me please?
Yeah man. It’s called Mikela. It’s a paid font
can u please make a tutorial on how you do this type of pretty coloring in your videos like in the first shot?? or if its a lut from somewhere, can i pls get the link to purchase/download ??
Sure! I’ll make a follow up video teaching my quick and simple color grading process along with other effects I regularly use to shoot content
awh thank u so much!! ill be waiting for it
@@Trentorials I would love to learn about this too!
How would you do that to the entire timeline (assuming the timeline is a mess and you can't duplicate every little clip)? 😅
in your case you should try to nest the footage after individually coloring it. this may not work as well but it could be a decent workaround. Otherwise manually, and painstakingly move the clips up so you have room to drag the duplicates above.
is it possible to add this effect to my existing lut?
thanks
I don’t think so. A LUT is a look up table. Which contains information on how to color and adjust using lumetri via a .cube file. in this case, you could save this as a preset. In some other videos, including the update to this one. I talk about that as well!
Great tutorial, I just did it across basically my entire timeline for a minute Reel. But my cpu is giving me an error trying to render. Without the bloom effect it renders fine, with no so much, any tips?
I'm not sure what problem you're having, but it is expected that it will take a long time to export. This goes for everyone on almost any device.
can you do this in adjustment layer instead? or no? thanks :)
I don’t think so. I haven’t found a way to do so yet anyways. If you figure out a way to make it work, please let us know in the comments!
your font is amazing what is the name?
It’s called Mikela! I made a short on it!
man i like ur colour grading can i get the coloul lut of yours or teach us make an tutorial

hey! made a tutorial video on the channel now since you asked about color grading!
what is the name of the font in the thumpnali pls?
Mikela (I made a short on it, which gives you more context. Check it out.)
why, when im trying to make this gausian blur, my vhole video just getting blured, not only the parts like in yours?
Did you make sure to add the Gaussian blur to the duplicate? if not, that’s your problem add the Luma key on top of the Gaussian blur as well
Uh seat belt?
Great video, entertaining as well as learning experience
I wear one! Just filmed myself driving for that shot for about 10 seconds lol. Glad you enjoyed and found it helpful!
YOU CAN DOUBLE CLICK TO ADD AN EFFECT?!?! Holydamn i've been working for 10 years with Premiere and I've never known this...
haha, you can most definitely do that, its the simple things that always get me stumped in software too. I'm sure there is more for us both to learn.
But the color grading you had before how did you do it ?
What do you mean? The original footage was in log. So there was no color grade on it. It was just raw 10-bit video.
umm hi.. what's the font that you're using in your videos ??
the font is called Mikela, no clue where I licensed it from but its a great font. three weights for some nice variation too

How do I get Affects?
What do you mean? Like you want a plugin?
Other way to do it, put glaussian blur on the first layer (V2), put the blur to 70%. In the opacity part, put in "screen" for the blend and choose the level of the opacity and you are done
its not a bad idea, but I feel the luma key does a cleaner job of focusing on the highlights
