Coeur de Noir remains one of my most regrettable purchases. I was so impressed that a perfume could smell like a smoldering ruin that I didn’t reflect on what it’s like to smell like a burnt forest at your desk. At what point does a perfume become a parody? A question for great minds.
@ Vanilla? Interesting. I recall cedar faintly detectible through the smoke, but either I missed the vanilla or I’ve forgotten about it. I have the bottle in my “to sell” cabinet and might revisit it. Thanks!
@ not really vanilla to me but more of a foggy, inky, dense, white incense. No burnt smell, barely any harshness, super smooth but a little suffocating. I like it a lot.
Beaufort is on my "must try"-List since last year. I haven't had the chance to try any of their fragrances yet, but Fathom V sounds super exciting. Who would have thought that there is a connection between The Prodigy and perfume. Wild. Cool to see that you are also a fan of the band. I've already been to their concerts twice and it was great every time.
@@MrViews-ij3tx there is not clear cut connection with the band (scent wise), I just thought it was a cool piece of trivia as I’m a fan. Fathom V is like my favorite from the house 👌
Love Rien Intense just started to wear it again as it's freezing in Texas. Agreed it's a masterpiece. The transition is so beautiful. I'd forgotten about that aspect of the fragrance
I love this fragrance. Imagine you are a smoker. You woke up in the morning and smoked 3 packs of cigarettes. So you take a refreshing shower, use that anti-dandruff shampoo, then shave with that shaving cream. Although you are completely clean and refreshed, the smell of cigarettes, of an ashtray, is permeating your soul. This perfume is that mix.
That is actually a really fitting image. So fitting in fact that I now know why I’m so sensitive to this smell. I always hated the chronic scent of cigarette and ashtray on a smoker’s skin and hair; you can’t wash it off or do anything about it. I never smoked which makes me not emphasize towards it in a romantic way either…
@@SeldomlyOften From an artistic point of view, let's say, it is impressive how they managed to reproduce this painting with such perfection. Although it's not the perfume you wear to receive compliments or anything like that, it never fails to leave you intrigued by this contradiction between scents. Rake and Ruin. 😉
I would Strongly recommend "Imaginary Authors, A City On Fire", if you haven't already tried it. It's one of the most underestimated masterpieces of modern fragrance history. It opens with a few seconds-minutes of smelling like a new struck match. Then transitions into smelling like a literal city on fire (an old city made of wood, not a modern city full of plastic and other chemicals). It then slowly turns more and more dark fruity, until about an hour in, where it becomes one the most sexy, alluring and gorgeous fragrances i've ever smelled. Sweet smoke huh? Amouage Interlude 53 and Black Iris are the first ones that come to mind but also other deep incense fragrances like DS&Durga Armber Kiso, Pernoire Masar, Filippo Sorcinelli Quando rapita in Estasi, Tauer's Lodestar Memories... So many!
Have not tried the Rien Incense Intense but the original one is more of a 'cuir de russie' type of perfume, quite smoky upon initial spray but then reveals a floral (mostly rose) heart and a patchouli/leather base
The intense is basically that but cranked up to 11, the smoky leather gets everywhere and is overwhelming at first, then turns into the incredible floral.
Hi Daniel! Have you tried Naomi Goodsir Bois d'ascese? It's a smoky incense on top of a classic masculine woody fragrance, a bit simple but perfectly executed
Fat of the Land is a fucking classic. Im fortunate enough to be working with a band on the Coachella bill this year, I'm hoping I'll get the chance to see the Prodigy's set from side stage. Fingers crossed.
I have a sample of this, I haven't tried it in a while for one reason. The greenery behind the smoke on the dry down. All I got was celery, the celery type note on this, and Inciendo by La Curie grosses me out so much, and it's annoying as hell because I absolutely love smoke. As far as pairing it with gin, I can see how that can happen (I'm not a drinker) but I do smoke cigars. Funny thing about smoking a cigar is when cigar smoke is in the air it usually has the same kind of smell to everyone who isn't smoking it, it's usually a dense, barnyard "unpleasant" smell. But what the rest of the world doesn't know is when you are actually smoking the cigar, the smoke you consume mixes with the smoke in the air around you and it turns into the most enjoyable part of the cigar. The smell completely morphs and you can get the natural sweetness, the deep round notes of what the tobacco intends to give off. You need to smoke it to see it, it's like a secret door. If they pulled this off with the gin they pair this with it's a masterful move (but this is just speculation)
Really cool take and info on the cigars, didn’t know that. Makes me want to get into smoking cigars, I always thought it would be a really interesting thing to learn about.
@SeldomlyOften I recommend it, it takes some of time and concentration to start tasting/smelling past the smoke, but given the right cigar profile in the beginning it can hook you really quick. It's very much like fragrance there's an entire universe to cigars and it could give you a different outlook on fragrance all together 🤘
@SeldomlyOften I gotcha, so first off start online so you get the absolute basics down. There is a process to smoking a cigar as far as cutting it, toasting the front, lighting it properly, not inhaling into your lungs, being able to retrohale (blow smoke out of your nose for better flavor). But picking a cigar the right cigar is also something to consider. If you're new go for something light, mild, mid sized diameter, and on the shorter side. Something like that would be called a Connecticut Shade Robusto. Connecticut Shade being (generally) a lighter more mild composition of tobacco, and a Robusto being a shorter mid sized diameter cigar. But in all honesty, if you go right into a premium cigar lounge, go right up to guy working there, tell him "Listen friend I want to try this but I don't know anything about it" they'll definitely help you out. Especially in a premium place, Cigars are a very niche thing and we like when people get into it. I would say watch a few videos online, then just go right into a shop 🤘🤘
Hey, Daniel, I'm curious to learn if you tried Shaman, by Anomalia Paris. That's a different kind of smoke, avvery realistic olfactory depiction of a particular Eastern Europe aspect, imo. I'd never recommend a purchase, but I found it interesting enough to drop it into discussion when the subject is smoky perfumes 😅

I need to sample Acrasia and especially Phatom V. Cheers
