    OR.....you can do like I did by purchasing a $25 Canon printer/scanner from Walmart and two $50 terabyte external hard drives from Micro Center and then scan 15k+ pictures to one hard drive and copy everything to the second hard drive as my backup. It took me some time to do this but I completed it on my own time at my own pace and I even have a backup copy of everything that I keep at another location should one copy get damaged for any reason.

    Another option with better color fidelity but no anti glare is setting up a controlled space with a DSLR or Mirrorless camera on a tripod. White balance your camera with a WhiBal, place every picture in the exact same spot, and then snap a photo one by one.

    • @K3zz21
      @K3zz21 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This was the exact idea I had. Perhaps even add an off-cam speed-light to bounce off the ceiling.

    • @bodinian
      @bodinian 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@K3zz21 word of warning from having done it is place your lighting perpendicular to your camera and put on a polarizing filter to prevent glare on glossy images or on the glass pane you'll place over them to hold them down flat. Don't worry about zooming your camera in to precisely line up the edges of your field of view with the edges of the picture because it's faster and easier to just rotate and crop the picture on the computer.

    • @blomegoog

      good luck with that idea. we now live in the era where inserting a disc into your CD or DVD player is consider a chore, even with the better quality. people now only care about lazy, convenient, low effort and quality wayside. welcome to digital.

    I just bought a wand scanner. I am going to scan everything that is a good shot. I am not going to keep duplicates and blurry shots, or people whom we cannot identify. Then I will put them in files on my computer, and save them on an SD card for backup, and an external hard drive. Newer photos will be uploaded right to the computer and saved.

  • @TheReal1953

    OK, but what I'm finding is that when you send friends/family these photos in like email to their cell phones.....they can't be enlarged without getting fuzzy. Yet you can send phone taken photos and enlarge them as much as you want.....is this a pixel thing??

    • @DH-wq3mo
      @DH-wq3mo ปีที่แล้ว +3

      If you choose original size when sending in email, they will. If you send via text messaging it's the worst. Messenger is a tad better. Email is the way to go - you are attaching the ORIGINAL file, so whatever resolution you SAVED the digital photo in is what is capability is for enlargement. :) hth

    using a phone camera to scan images is a horrible idea. phone camera lenses are wide angle and have a lot of distortion.

    • @DH-wq3mo
      @DH-wq3mo ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I use mine often, but it's not ideal... Lots of glare issues, graininess, color distortion. You almost need a consistent lab environment to properly use this as an option. That said, I highly recommend doing it. Because the grainy picture with a little bit of glare or maybe bent the wrong direction is better than no picture at all! I've also been able to share a lot of photos with family members that they might not otherwise get to see. They may not be perfect but they are better than nothing. They're also a nice hedge against losing all of your precious photos in a disaster. Then you'd be happy to have that imperfect photo!

    I print all my digital photos and keep them safe in a photo album.. Although I do have them on my computer and a CD, in my opinion that method is not really reliable. Computers may crash and Microsoft are upgrading programs all the time so you can loose all your precocious memories. The storage units for computers is always changing. There was a time when floppy disks was the big thing and I lost quite a bit of information when computer programs were upgraded and they replaced it with a CD player. Now computers are getting away from putting CD player on their computer and there will probably come the day when computer companies will replace flash drives also.

      Maaan i know this comment is 4 years old but it’s so funny. Imagine if they made the MOST advanced AI imaginable that could not only use the unimaginable amounts of data something like google earth has fast enough for a PHOTO APP, and then could process all that data and compare with random holiday photos taken from any angle imaginable. We’re talking amounts of data a NASA supercomputer would take a while to sort through.
      I don’t mean to be condescending but this is like a child asking if there is a machine that can make infinite ice cream from thin air because he doesn’t understand how matter works yet. How would you even interpolate the data unless you took those pictures from pretty much the same place and angle that google did? It’s fun to think about how any of this would be fathomably possible

      There is a small risk of losing pictures digitally but physical pictures will fade and can easily get lost/damaged/destroyed. Digitally scanning and uploading the pictures to a cloud is safer imo.

      Colour-shifting, easily damaged due to fragility and people keeping them in sticky back albums in which the sticky stuff is dissolving them... also natural disasters. Scan them to a hard drive computer and cloud. 3 backups. Problem solved. And you can use lightroom to edit the scanned pics to save them from overexposure, red eye, scratches, physical damage etc etc

    • @Halbmond
      @Halbmond 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Olivia Daly the image quality doesn’t change whether you use the app’s sharing or saving function. And it has been my experience that taking a photo of a paper photo tends to result in a better image quality than scanning using a low- or mid-range printer. A really good scanner might be better, though, sure. Then there’s also the issue with glare - at least my scanner-printer doesn’t create usable results with very glossy photos.

    • @DH-wq3mo

      Suggestions? I don't know of any other options.. there are different options on purchasing a scanner and what phone app to use, and even what service to use if you're shipping them off, but there's really no other option to get your photos digitized. If you have one it seems like you might have suggested it first rather than saying there were more than three. Followed by a period.

  • @yuvgotubekidding
