  • This video answers the number one question that people ask me when I'm speaking about the Beattie's Digital Studio Collection - "I've got all these old photos, what do I do with them?"

Forgotten Tasmania shares the wonder of Tasmania with the world.
John Watt Beattie left a legacy. He started a passion for Tasmania that is still burning nearly one hundred years after his death. His photographic collection gives us a view of Tasmania’s wilderness, industry, our people, both those that arrived in the last 200 years and those that were here before; our indigenous, convict and colonial ancestors.
These photographs are an extraordinary window into our past, they can take us back in time
and show us how things have stayed the same or changed with the ebb and flow of history.
We are Tasmanian, these are our stories.

Love your advise. I'm one of those people who find old photo's gold dust. As a family historian these photo's put faces to names and turns my research into stories with so much more interest.

I am starting to do some genealogical research in my family and came across a few old (1930) snapshots of one of my great-great grandmothers. Two people on Ancestry had uploaded a group family photo and also a studio portrait of my g-g-grandmother with her husband ----blessings on those people! Otherwise I would never have known what she had looked like when she was younger, or what my g-g-grandfather had looked like.

Good onya mate for the information. I must have approx 10000 photos in my family collection from before the 1920s to the early 2000s, before digital cameras. Thanks for the inspiration and ideas.

Thank you for this. I am now the custodian of my family’s photos since my father died last year. I’m also attempting to minimise. The custodian job does not spark joy at all. So I did a TH-cam search to find out how to cope with these boxes of photos, and here you are. Coincidentally I live in Launceston. :)

I’m going through this now, 2023, and it’s the type of thing that wakes you up at night. What in the world do I do with all of these pictures?

Great advise John. I can relate so well. Have been doing Family History for many, years. Besides all the data I have collected, I have become the primary Custodian of many old Family Albums and photos. My main project is to catalogue into family groups as photos are loose, albums and on USB's

I’m the custodian of my parent’s home, and it’s taken a year of my life away, sorting out their things, and 50 years of pictures PLUS my Grandparents photo albums!
I’d like to pull the covers over my head and hide, but I’m bonded by the Court to empty the house and sell it. WTF am I supposed to do with 50 years of photos?!?!

I feel your pain. Done that twice in the last few years. From the first one (brother) I learned to get help sooner rather than once I’d reached the end of my tether. The second one (mother) I learned to separate out the stuff that I really had to deal with myself, like the photos, papers and specifically named items in the will. Leave the rest to the estate clearers. If you get really good ones, they will always defer to you if in doubt. But the emotional toll of disposing of a lifetimes worth of stuff that’s sentimental, you know they valued it, but the reality is that today you’ll be lucky to get anything for it. It’s incredibly hard. But the photos are easy. Digitise everything. Then you can store, give away or dispose of the photos. That’s the gold in the estate. Big virtual hugs.

@@ForgottenTasmania Thank you so much. I'm sitting in my parent's house right now, my husband has been clearing out trash for a couple of hours now, and we've been at this since April. I have a helper, but I am Bonded through the court, and can't pack up the house and sell it, because I have 2 siblings, and I have to hire an estate appraiser to appraise the contents of the house before I can sell anything. I knew this would take a year of my life, and I'm trying to make the best of it.
edit to say: Holy Cow, the sleep I've lost just thinking about someone having to empty out MY house!
