#97 What an Oblique Strain Feels Like & How to Rehab It

  • I thought I’d sit down and go through my story about how I developed an oblique strain playing baseball, how I rehabbed it successfully to play baseball again and what I would do differently next time (if there ever is a next time).
I posted an article and video about my story that has gotten a lot of attention on the web, which translates into people emailing me to ask me questions about what they should do.
They write me pretty frequently about how they found hope by reading my success story since, but they also reveal their frustration about how there seems to be no light at the end of the tunnel for them. I find this very sad because all of these people can’t find anyone with experience in how to assist them in their recovery aside from the boilerplate “rest and see how it goes.”
I only used complete rest for a few weeks and then I took the active approach… That was more than 3 years ago now and I feel great.
Listen to this podcast if you know someone dealing with an oblique strain, abdominal, a “pulled muscle in their side,” or even a sports hernia.
    Enjoy!

Sad to see so much negativity in the comments considering that you’re providing (for free I might add) information that normally comes with a cost.
Great podcast! Former collegiate football player here and have been dealing with this injury and re-aggravation for the past 11 months and have recently been tripping whether or not I need surgery and how I can get myself over the hump with rehab instead of stacking on more scar tissue. Loved the podcast considering that there isn’t much out there for resources online about this injury.

Got an external oblique strain from surfing everyday trying to get back into it. Gotta let your body rest no matter how much you enjoy your sport because this SUCKS!!

Great video if you want to consume yourself with paranoia surrounding your injury and learn that there is “not really anything you can do.”

@@daniellethewatertrainer This was such a snoozefest. So much filler. Very little actual helpful content. It appears the lack of useful information was deliberate. While growing strawberries in the outfield was an interesting anecdote, I failed to comprehend it's relevancy.

I strained my left oblique playing golf. Leaning back with the upper body trying to get under it. I know I over stretched it. What specific exercises did you do?

As of November 2021 I can confirm your SEO is still on point; the search query "oblique strain rehab for powerlifting" yields this video as the top result. I appreciate that the steps in your article are more detailed than the bog standard "1. Be sedentary 2. ask your doctor" advice that's everywhere in this space (which is regrettable even if the liability reasons make sense).
The timelines involved aren't unexpected, but still make for grim reading for someone in a sport where huge intra-abdominal pressure under load is a prerequisite for skill work and most meaningful training as well as competition. Grim reading is better than just lying on your side under an ice pack being sad at 1am though, right? I'm telling myself that anyway
Edit for anyone in my position doing the same search later who might be tempted into thinking bench work is still fine: do NOT do this. It is not fine. The pain really is something else

Thank you for your feedback. We update articles yearly and the most updated information is on the podcast you just heard. Anyone dealing with this is welcome to reach out to us directly as the timelines in the article are based upon my personal experience, which is not what everyone's experience would be. Making a personalized recovery plan comes down to getting examined and coached by someone who has experience in the condition.
