This is extremely useful, thanks D-man, my 21st birthday is up in 13 days and I'm going to be able to order some drinks without either sounding completely ignorant or ordering something that requires a more matured palette.
Good list. For my 21st I believe I had an old fashioned made with Knob Creek. I was watching a ton of Mad Men at the time, so that kind of influenced that decision
When I started drinking I knew nothing about cocktails. I remember going to a classier bar (Portland is full of them, damn hipsters) and I thought "I want a martini..." - so I order a martini and am asked "Gin or Vodka?" umm.... Gin? "What type of gin? Bombay, Hendricks, Tanqueray?" umm..... whichever? "Dry, perfect or wet?" WTF? "Dirty?" No.... --- SO MANY OPTIONS! I felt like an idiot not knowing what any of these things were. So I went home and started reading about spirits and the various options and later on found CMC (I'm 29 now, first cocktail was at 23). I wanted to be an educated consumer and wanted to be able to order drinks properly, talk with the bartenders about cocktails, etc. I find when you get to a good bar with knowledgeable bartenders, if you show enthusiasm and interest in craft cocktails you will get a much better level of service (and some free sample drinks) than someone that just wants to get buzzed.
yeah, I believe if you go to a good bar with some good folks they'll recognize someone that's got the knowledge and enthusiasm and encourage that, even if it's sampling or trying things on their dime :)
Thanks for the tips! I'm going to a fancy place next week and i'm used to drinking rum and coke, scotch on the rocks, and beer. Everyone else is 21, and I'm just sheltered! haha
Great video. I don't have any experience in making any drinks but I went out bought the 4 spirits for a long island ice tea and it taste way better then what I would have gotten from my local bar so I'm going to try to explore more to see if I can kinda find a good bar that really makes cocktails and see if it taste the same as the one I make at home. And I also substituted the cola for a dark rum and it came out pretty Damn good and the guys loved it
I'd test drive out some sours, like a daiquiri with the rum (we've got a few on the channel), a gin fix with the gin, a margarita with the tequila (assuming you didn't buy Jose Cuervo Gold or Margaritaville) and start exploring from there. The sour category is big, and is the root for a ton of recipes.
The gin and tonic was the first mixed drink I truly enjoyed, especially once I found a gin (Beefeater) and a tonic (Fever Tree Mediterranean or Schweppes) that pairs well with the gin. Other than that, the only alcoholic beverage I drink on a semi-regular basis is beer.
The first alcoholic beverage I had when I turned 21 was Jägermeister. I never really got into all the fancy drinks. All of my alcohol is either consumed neat, on the rocks, or mixed with Coke or fruit juice.
Being 21 I would say yes. This list is accurate for any person starting out drinking, but i think there should be a vodka drink, but not this fruity crap. I would suggest the vesper. 2 parts gin 1 part vodka, ½ part kina lillet (i know the spelling is probably wrong) but this is a good drink that has vodka in it.
omg, a vesper is NOT what I'd ever give a new drinker that knows vodka is "a thing" -- that's going right into hardcore mode, here is our version: th-cam.com/video/zY0YEbg2A78/w-d-xo.html That's like when you turn 16 and instead of getting some broken down beater car, someone gets you a new BMW instead. lol. It's just overboard. And, they won't appreciate it yet :)
***** Now I am 23 but I can say I have tasted most on this list and long island is not my favorite. Thanks for doing this since i have a friend who recently turned 21 and this list is better compared to what I had.
Joseph Hall Ontario or some other Canadian province where the drinking age is 18/19. It’s why the drinking scenes in Scott Pilgrim vs the World (set in Ontario) were not underage and annoying.
Derrick I'm about to turn 21 in two weeks and a local bar here offers a free fishbowl on your birthday. My choices are either a Long Island ice tea or an AMF. What do you think?
Question, all (generalizing) cocktail channels on yt are american, and they keep talking about how tonic is sweet, I am thinking wtf! Its the bitterest thing I have ever put in my mouth. So the question is, is there anything wrong with your tonic or my tonic or do you mean sweet in the same way Rum is “sweet” or Speyside is “sweet” or bourbon is “candied”? I would understand that comparison if thats what you mean, but honestly first time drinkers will never call any of those things sweet, so if this IS the case, is it truly advisable to use this terminology? Good stuff.
1:41 you said “sweeter”, which reminded me that a lot of these tutorials talk about sweetness with regards to tonic water, so I had to ask because I know you are one of the few who reply to comments.
tonic water has a lot of sugar in it, traditionally, as does ginger beer, to offset the bitterness. Tonic is basically water, sugar and quinine. But, "sour mix" is also sweet to offset the sour. A good balance is important, traditional tonic is highly condensed quinine (to stop malaria) and they used gin to dilute it to make it not as bitter. Today, we probably use more sugar to do that but I'd never say tonic is sweet, i'd say it's bitter. So yeah, maybe like rum is sweet, but rum can also have added sugar so you need to be careful with that. I think when you hear people say tonic is sweet it's because they are experienced drinkers and are used to some of the bitter nuances. It's also true some people do not have the same bitter taste senses as others so it would be more sweet to them. New tonic drinkers would no doubt say "holy shit, this is bitter" but, experienced rum drinkers will probably call a rum sweet while a new person would probably say "it tastes like alcohol"
Yesterday was my 21st. Had a mai tai and then my buddy made me do a jaegerbomb. It was odd to say the least but im 6'5" and 320lbs so it didnt hit me too hard.
It will also depend on muscle/fat ratio as well. Muscle can absorb a good amount of alcohol where fat will push it away and leave it in the system (and make you get light headed / drunk ). Because fat and alcohol don't mix so the alcohol stays around longer.
sure. usually the cheaper ones are for making drinks with and the more expensive ones are for sipping on their own. But you can make a cocktail with an expensive one, or sip on a cheap one if you want. Just make sure either way that it says 100% agave on the bottle!
Conrad's answer is on point. Some additional details for tequila: there are 4 general types: mixto, blanco, reposado, and anejo. Mixto is commonly called "gold" or "silver", ex. Jose Cuervo, and is absolute shit. It's 51% tequila, 49% additives, tastes bad, & the addivites cause hangovers. It's also not necessarily cheaper. That's why Derrick always hates on it like in this video. They are the same regardless of color... it's just food coloring. The other 3 are "real" tequilas... generally just make sure it says "100% de (blue) Agave" on the bottle. The difference is the age: blanco (unaged, clear), reposado (aged a few months, yellowish), anjeo (aged a few years typ, dark color). The darker the color the more aged it is. Blancos are usually best for mixed drinks (margaritas), Anjeos are best for fancy sipping/tasting parties and are similar to sipping a fine whiskey/scotch, and repos are generally right in the middle and can be used for both. Using an anejo for a margarita is a waste of $, blancos don't have the nuances for sipping (though fine for shots). Even for really cheap margaritas, you can get a cheap 100% de agave blanco cheaper than most or all mixtos (Cuervo) and it will be 100 times better. I generally recommend reposado unless it's a gift for a scotch drinker or someone who would appreciate sipping it, then anejo. Cabo Wabo is generally the best relatively common brand of tequila you will find (in the US anyway); but it costs a decent amount more (it also won Derrick's blind tasting a few years back, and all my tequila drinking friends rate it #1). There are a lot of good brands. I worked in a liquor store for a few years so this is generally how I would recommend / sell stuff to people. Just FYI, Derrick has a video or two up on his channel explaining all of this in details. Use the channel search feature.
or 19 18 15 depending on where ya live... where I live it's 18 to drink but 20 to buy, but where I'm moving (æøå) there are no age limits to drink but you have to be 16 to buy. quite fascinating seeing the different views on alcohol.
sure, but given our US based audience and me wanting to hit the right search query this is titled to be easily findable with a quick search vs. making it open ended and having nobody find it. But, yes, every country has it's age, "insert your age into the title" as appropriate :-)
my 1st "legal" drink was a frozen piná colada made at home with the cheap Holland House drink mixer. It did the job, but what a pain in the butt to make! Totally not worth it once you factor in the clean up time. I don't think I've made any blender drinks in 21 years since then!
Could someone summarize all 13 drinks for me? I just turned 21 and I want to try some cocktails.. like their names and the tastes of each. Lolz >_< my data is so slow... and I wanna know all the list of it 😂
just watch the channel, you'll find all these drinks on there, or use channel search. Or, if you're new to cocktails some of our best curated cocktails are in our database: recipe.awesomedrinks.com
Everyone knows that there will be lime juice in a cuba libre, every reciepes is different, but if you dont have lime juice in a cuba librre, it is just a rum and coke.
You're under the impression that 21 year old college kids have money. Everyone I know just buys Keystone Light or Busch Light beer because it's the cheapest thing they can find
I was a 21 year old college kid, I had a job on the side and worked during the summers to afford my car insurance and other random expenses. Todays college kids, statistically, have about $211 in discretionary spending per month and, just like when I was a 21 year old college kid, those that are usually "broke" just spent their money on other things that they found higher priority. I also went to school with a few "actual' broke college kids and they were the ones that typically also worked a full time job and paid their own way through college. But, it's pretty stereotypical that a college kid (who often is getting help paying college tuition from parents, lives with parents when not on campus and probably got their first car with help from mom and dad) have money to spend on a few drinks...but opt to spend it on other random stuff and let the dregs of that spending be spent on way too much Schlitz for the weekend. ;-)
Don’t think I’ve ever heard someone sound so elitist about a cocktail. I understand how you want people to branch off from rail mixers, but you don’t have to drag cocktails, mixed drinks, and people who enjoy them.
If you feel this is elitist, move on, it's really that simple. This is for _our audience_ that asks me this question all the time, if you want to poke your head in and learn / enjoy, that's fine, but you don't have to come by to rain on the parade just to feel like you need to leave a comment name calling me for creating a video for my audience; while that's not an elitist move, it's kinda a sad one.
I JUST TURNED 21 sooo I'm here..

On my 21st birthday, I ordered first an Irish coffee and then a martini with thyme syrup and grapefruit bitters.
