This variant is so crazy, so many moves that would normaly be blunders can't be punished because taking would lose material. This is gonna be a wild ride.

Same reason they exist in normal chess. If the king can’t move out of check, and is in check, and another piece cannot capture the checking piece (or surrounding piece if the checking piece isn’t a pawn and the surrounding piece to be captured isn’t adjacent to your own king), and the check can’t be blocked, it’s checkmate.

A queen can checkmate without needing a protector (which is needed in normal chess) next to the king on the edge.

Timestamp is off by a hair. It’s after white plays Ke2 that simp captures pawn instead of my suggested move. Minecraft is correct here

when a pawn captures it will not explode surrounding pieces, but it still blows both the capturer and the captured up.

It is stated at 0:34 that pawns do not explode when they are not part of the capture ("every adjacent piece, except pawns")

Ah, atomic chess, the variant where opening with a move besides Nf3, Nh3, or e3 should be considered a side variant
This might be a poor implementation of it; normal checkmate detectors do not function because if the kings are adjacent neither king can be captured.

the only reason knights are strong is because they can get out straight away
well so can pawns the real kicker is they're the only piece that can develop turn 1
