The internal workings of still a fairly simple engine always amazes me and the engineers who designed it. Every little washer, gear, fitting, spacer, contour, bearing, spring, etc.
I’ve never seen that counter balance chain timed off a mark in the case. I’m only familiar with using marks on the sprockets then counting out the links on the chain. Seemed like there was more vibration on rebuilt engine. Otherwise pretty much textbook tear down and rebuild. Love these XL engines, simple and bullet proof. Nice work guys.

Counter shaft seal has to be fitted with the cases apart - yours isn’t ( and it’s vital to gearbox oiling , it’s not just an oil seal like most are ) . Also the main shaft locating dowel isn’t fitted - that’s also not just a dowel , it’s also an oil feed . Good luck if you want the gearbox to last .

Reason I ask is because I'm doing the top end only on an '83 xl250r now and was thinking to change that along with every other accessible seal. I won't do it if it won't seal. I have the seal and it had a lip that would lock it into the case halves, but it seems like it would grab if inserted after the fact too. Thanks.
@@mmtunphilly if it’s the RFVC engine then it’s okay . If it’s the early one ( same as in the 250s ) then not really . The seal has a locating lip that has to be ground off to stand any chance of going in , but even then it usually buggers the seal trying to get it in and the final position is critical ( that’s why they have the lip in the first place )

If you're dismantling the engine I'd have gone for the big bore 310cc conversion kit, replacement head and piston, just bolts straight on in place of the original.
All that slop at the end of the camshaft is not good. SOHC Hondas are susceptible to this if run without regular oil changes. Otherwise good work on renovating a faithful engine!

As I always do.. why didn't they replace one of the most important bearings that gets the most stress?? The big end/conrod bearing 🤔?
Because you can’t 😂🤦🏻♂️ they’re pressed together you can’t get new cranks for these engines either trust me I’m doing one up I know
