  • Conrail's Lucknow Continuous Welded Rail facility tour - June 07, 1990. This was one of the tours during the Penn State Rail Symposium, which was held in Harrisburg, PA, that year. Process includes unloading bolted rail off inbound train, unbolting and removing joiner plates, cropping off the drilled holes, polishing the ends for the welding process at 7:40, grinding and polishing finished weld, and then loading back onto an outbound rail train. This facility closed shortly after NS took over in 1999.

    Maybe others find this boring. But as a lifelong fan of Conrail I found it very informative and its certainly history. Lucknow and all the other Conrail facilities in PA did a top-notch job keeping the traffic running safely and had some of the best people in the industry working there. Now that NS essentially owns all of it it is not the same and Hollidaysburg and Altoona are shadows of what they were.
