most likely the reason misfits packed your purchase the way they did because they were accounting for your envioment weatherwise
I spoke to my sister who majored in environmental science. It’s a question of whether you see the packaging or not. When produce arrives at the grocery store, it definitely comes in a ton of packaging.
Nah it comes to the stores in reusable plastic totes that generally have cardboard separators but nothing really else.
The packaging can be used in your yard to create a worm growing area. That is all biodegradable. I wouldn't be disappointed in that card board and brown paper.

I totally agree with you. I usually go get this type of packaging to put in my garden in the fall and through the winter ( to keep weeds at bay and bring in worms. I also feed me worms coffee grounds and raw vegetables) and then between my rows when growing to kill weeds.
The packaging is also for protection during shipping. That stuff would have gotten smushed in those plastic bags with all those heavy boxes being moved around in that truck.

I'll take 100 boxes and any amount of paper over any plastic! It is biodegradable. Plastic is not. Also, your groceries would not look as well as they did in plastic bags. I love that they used all cardboard and paper.
Wash veg with vinegar water (fruits too) to kill mold and stray bugs. Store celery and lettuce in the fridge, but in water like you'd do with a bouquet. Everything lasts longer when stored properly.

I thought you were unfair concerning the packaging. Obviously the produce could not have been mailed to you in those plastic bags. How do you think they should protect the fruit and vegetables? I think the packaging is what kept the produce as nice as it was. If you are concerned about the packaging recycle it. That would be the responsible thing to do instead of bashing the company.

Everything was recyclable. Her produce looked good. If it had been damaged she would give bad review on that.
Recycling is not the great thing people think it is. The best thing for the environment is to not produce this packaging. Shop local
@@kristyboule8768 Paper/Cardboard is biodegradable, and sourced from sustainable tree farms. Even in a hypothetical world where recycling is a complete scam (which, I'll admit, it is close) there's nothing objectionable about paper bags/boxes from an environmental standpoint. In fact, a lot of animals would like for there to be more ugly brown boxes around so that they can use them for nesting material/ shelter.
I don’t think she is bashing but giving people the pros & cons of this. People are making the “misfit decision” bc they think they’re saving food & the environment.. in her opinion we could just go to the store & save the world all these packaging . At the same time, she is telling us (like many other have) usually food is not thrown away but converted to juices, soups, TV dinner ... or animal food
At the end she is giving it to us to make our own decision after her assessment
Note: the packaging is both recycled and recyclable. Mine came with different packaging (looked like quilt batting with a thin plastic sheet over both sides) but the paper packaging wouldn't bother me either.
Also, we don’t see all the packaging that grocery stores have in the back for that much food. Honestly, it’s probably not much more packaging than normal….and, like you said, recyclable.
I absolutely love Misfits! I'm vegan and eat a lot of organic vegetables. I get 1 big box for $35 a month. It's loaded with fantastic fruits and vegetables that would cost a great deal more in the stores. I live in Maine and there are no stores near me where I can find produce at the prices you mentioned.

Here in rural New Hampshire there is one grocery store in town, a chain (Star/Shaws)
Not only do they price gouge but the veggie selection is narrow and not in the best of shape.
The sale price on a NON organic bell pepper is $1.99 EACH.
Yes, not per pound but by the pepper.
I laughed when she said she wouldn't pay over a dollar per pound for veg.
If I drive 45 minutes one way, in the fair weather, I can do better than the prices in this small town yet still not average a dollar per pound for veg & fruit.
No public transportation, Uber/Left just about nonexistent here & I have no car, so yeah, Misfits can be good for rural folk.
*You become very good at keeping veg around.
I do a lot of dehydrating, fermenting, pickling, freezing, and canning.
Still, nothing beats fresh!

@@ozziejin well I would rotate the veggies. The 1st week the leafy greens goes first. I also add some those veggie fresh paper to the draw or containers. It does help a little, the produce does last a tiny bit longer. But I’ve never ordered from this place, I do buy a lot of leafy greens and veggies though.

I'm from the Midwest and I have never heard anyone say "squarsh" lol. But too many people say "warsh" and it just hurts my ears so much 😫 I got a subscription similar to this and had the same problem with my food going bad too quickly and basically throwing away more money than I was by shopping at the store. Thank you for this honest review. It was very helpful.

I'm a Midwestern and I don't put an 'r' in all my words. So, I'm not sure what's she is talking about and too people who I know don't use an extra 'r' in their words.

If you like random boxes of produce, I would suggest investing in a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) with a local farm. During the growing season, you receive a box of that week’s harvest. Higher quality AND you are investing in your local farms. God Bless♥️

Shannon L check your local farms (if you have local farms) to see if they have a CSA. Ours isn’t local as in the same town but they have pickup sites throughout the city so it makes it more convenient for pick up:)

I don’t think there are any fruits or veggies for 50cents a pound at my grocery stores, especially not for organic. This seems like a really good deal to me.
I haven't read all the comments, so I'm sorry if this is redundant, but.....organically grown produce DOES tend to "go bad" more quickly, because it's lacking the chemicals that make it look "fresh and healthy". It's just part of the package. :)
That's always hurt to me because I grow quite a bit of my produce just I don't have the space to grow enough to live off of. I don't garden with pesticides because I don't need to. My stuff stays fresh about as long as the conventional produce and I'm not doing anything special.
I still have produce from a month ago from Misfits and it is still good. I did not freeze mine on my porch overnight. I also haven seen tomatoes for .50 a lb in years.
🤣 I'm from the Midwest and I've never said, "Squarsh" or heard anyone else from the Midwest say that! You're funny! 😂 I should add a big "Thank you!" for showing us your order. It helped me make up my mind not to go with Misfits. I wouldn't want that much squash or lettuce, we'd never get it eaten before it went bad. And the tomatoes were very disappointing.
If it had not been packaged that well considering the time it sat outside it would probably would have frozen.
I disagree on the packaging. All of it could be recycled in the garden . plastic bag... not so much.
Grocery store bags can be recycled too with MUCH less waste in production.

Hmmm, well I have been getting Misfit boxes for about 3 months and I love having it delivered to my house. It saves me money too because I'm not walking through the store impulse buying other items. Also, I don't usually buy organic because it is more expensive. I'm really happy with Misfits.
Yea, it’s let me do my shopping for non-produce at a different store which has cut my weekly costs down.
Mine is delivered by Fed-Ex and I get notifications! I know when it’s picked up, day it’s being delivered and even get message after delivered. For us here in Maine it’s a great deal even if there is some packing damage. We love it, and the kids get so excited when it comes!
Without that packaging protecting the fruit and veggie I,m sure you would have had frozen or smashed products.

You can put the lettuce in water and it will crisp up again. It’s not bad, the poor things are dehydrated. Against what we are told, I would have put the tomatoes in the fridge or used them same day just based on how they arrived.

My first time visiting your chanel. I recently started getting a lg. box every other week. I am on a very fixed income so get wanting to save money. I had never tasted organic before getting the box and I was shocked with the flavor. I feel so blessed evey time my box comes. I did get some green sponges to help keep it fresh, When you dont have to go and make 50 decissions or you feel like everything is too much so have no choice, I love having wonderful fruit and veg at my door. Costomer service is great also you can tell them the tomatoes were bad and they will adjust your bill so your not stuck with an inferior product. I love not having to lug all that home and into my appartment. Things can be dammaged just in transit.

I had a feeling you were going to say that it went bad fast. They say that their produce is short dated, which is another way of saying past peak freshness and on its way out. I was thinking of trying them once but when I saw that I decided against it. I’ve had that issue in some grocery stores. Their prices on produce was lower than other stores but it would rot in only a couple of days which led me to believe it was old when they bought it, which is how they got it and sold it at a cheap price. Through trial and error I found a store that has the best quality for the best price - not the most expensive store but not the cheapest either.
The food looks like it molded and wilted because it was exposed to cold temperatures. I have had that happen before
The same will happen if you store your produce too near the fan. Yeah, I think this is what happened. I wouldn’t order this if there were a chance it would sit in freezing or very hot weather for too long. Milder parts of the year, or even times when shipping companies are more consistent, it would probably be fine.
We’ve been getting misfits for over a year. If you’re not happy with the quality, let them know and they’ll make it right. I find that the tomatoes don’t ship very well, so I don’t order those.
I think yours didn’t turn out to be a great deal because you got all basics. If you order romanesco, golden beets, Brussels sprouts, etc, in your box, you’ll save substantially over buying those at the grocery store. I think it really depends on what you choose. :)
I would never buy that stuff so it was just a huge waste all around for me. Even more food spoiled the next day.
I have used Farm Fresh to You for over a year and I've been happy with the quality overall.
I learned not to order pit fruit or pears, but the apples and citrus are usually great.
I like the variety of produce that they offer. Apples that I've never heard of, for example.
And their rainbow chard is GORGEOUS, unlike the bruised or torn leaves from the store.
I keep meaning to compare price, but never got around to it.
I realize that I'm paying for the convenience of having it appear on my doorstep.
They always deliver in the middle of the night so if the produce sits there a few hours, it's during the coolest part of day...but I'm in Los Angeles. No freezing temps here.🌞⛱

Sprinkle a little brown sugar or molasses on the split half and place on a cookie sheet to bake until tender about 1 hour at 350.
Worth noting that you didn't have to drive to the store and shop around town. Also, the food comes to your door already ripe. I wouldn't expect the food to last very long after it arrives at your door. It probably needs to be used right away.

I thought I remember hearing/reading that this company unless it was another one takes irregular shaped/size produce that they can't sell in the grocery store because they have to be "just the perfect shape/size" and sells it online. Hence why it's called "Misfits". I don't buy organic at the store but have grown produce in my garden and have to say a lot of things don't last long for the simple fact nothing is sprayed onto it.
I tried a different company with an initial discount and did the same calculating and it was more expensive than regular store prices, too. Oh, and when I saw you bring out all that lettuce I was thinking, even the best lettuce would be hard to use all that before it went bad
These companies you really have to order and when it comes to your door you must eat the same day or else it goes bad quickly. It may have something to do with that is no preservatives/ chemical to last longer.

Good tip for cut lettuce. Cut a little off stem and put into water like cut flowers. Lasts loads longer.
Yep. Things have been getting here at 10 pm too. Rarely before 3 pm. I couldn't go through that much til some went bad so no deal plus summer I grab what I need from the garden.

They actually do credit when you are unhappy. I had them credit several times, but got tired of asking.
The point of “misfits” is less than perfect.
I just canceled my Misfits subscription, I didn’t think it was a good fit for me. There’s only two of us and it was too much of some things and not enough of the other. Also as another person commented, stuff goes bad pretty quickly. My grandkids have a ball with the old boxes. Boxes and a roll of masking tape can keep them entertained for days, building stufff
You DO get to choose what they send from many available things. You don’t just get what they send randomly unless you never bother to log on a select. We are only two people and get a $22 box 2x/month and are really pleased.
I love misfits. They are attentive to my issues if I have any, the food is always great. I love the big red tomatoes I get and my packaging was only messed with once. The fourth of July holiday got me a partially crushed package. Inside 6 of a dozen eggs were broken. When I notified misfits I was immediately credited for a dozen eggs. I think these folks are great. I checked their prices are comparable and since i' m home bound and the stores here don't deliver misfits is helping me to live a better life than I would. Love their meats also.

I love Misfits Market! I order a small box every other week and it's perfect for me. I only have to pick up a couple of veggies in the two week period. Don't forget that these veggies are organic! I don't find the quality that much different from the grocery store.
I think i would wash the lettuce and put it in a ziplock bag to crisp up. That also helps it keep longer. That is why grocers have the misters that come on. It helps keep everything crisp and fresh.
I stored the same way I store leaf lettuce when I buy it and it didn't even last 24 hours.

Thanks for doing this video. I almost purchased a box and then I backed out of it. I'm glad I didn't waste my money!
I just purchased my 1st box and I was very satisfied with it. Calculating the gas prices, the time, the stuff we buy on impulse sometimes, etc saved me tons of $. I had a coupon and spent $24 for the box. I'd definitely give them a try to see if you'll be happy with them or not. I'd be careful when ordering some fragile items because mine came from NJ to FL so that's a long way. I bought a bottle of Chosen almond oil 33.8 oz, for under $3 because it expires at the end of the year. I never in my life found that price ANYWHERE in the stores. So I'm definitely going to order some more items probably twice a month or so. You'll find stuff that you won't believe they'd have on their website. Btw I'm not at all affiliated with them, just a mom of 5 that tries to pinch pennies whenever possible.

Another reason that a item is a
Misfit is when there's an over abundance of that item.
organic food tends to also spoil faster then regular produce because it doesn't have all those preservatives, best way is just use it as soon as possible or store it well.
Thank you this review. I have been using this service a couple months (two boxes per month) and have generally enjoyed it - in my area you can pick your items. But I did have issues with a couple things that arrived in not so great shape and could not be used. I don't normally buy organic at the store so I decided this wasn't really worth my $$$. Like you said, by shopping sales you can get better prices. I do tend to do one big grocery trip (there's just two of us) a month so it was nice getting some produce delivered mid-month. But I agree with you, too costly.

yup- i cancelled when i picked potatoes i got 2 potatoes and they were not big. just wasnt worth the money for what i got.
I tried MM for a while and it was really a mixed bag. It kept me out of the store at the start of the pandemic and I was largely pleased with the selection and quantity back last summer. However, because it was shipped with FedEx, there were often problems with delivery. It once came 5 days late (in July, in TN) and it was essentially a box of hot garbage by the time I got it. I also got a different box a week late during the winter and that was fine because I think what happened is they said they were mailing it and somehow didn't.
So, what happened during those times were I had to go to the store and get produce while waiting for my MM box to show up. So then I had too much-- because how do you know how much to buy when you aren't sure when your food will come? Anyway, it just makes it hard to plan. I also had a lot of it go bad rather quickly. The greens often did (except for the kale and chard) and even the winter squash which was in the fridge went back quicker than usual. I finally just canceled it because I thought just as much was getting wasted if not more.
I also was a little disappointed in that they would send 8 apples and 6 pears but only 4-6 potatoes. And I swear, once, they sent me what had to have been about 3-4 POUNDS of ginger! (I made a lot of ginger tea and also put it in smoothies but it was A LOT!)
In NJ we have alot of produce stores and your right. It seems like it has to be used the same day.. It's probably old and it's ashame it went that quick. It might be a good deal if comparing to whole foods and eaten the same or next day.
Thanks for sharing. I had purchased from them over late spring into early summer last year and was very disappointed. If I didn't prepare the item day of, I was having to throw things away because they went bad in the fridge
As a person that grows a lot of tomatoes, one look at those maters I knew they were way overripe. The lettuce looked like it may have been frozen then thawed at some point. I wouldn't buy products like that. Who knows how old it is. Thank you for the freebee.
I bought Imperfect Produce. Thought that it wasn’t worth the money. I can buy my produce at ALDI and our local produce store for cheaper.
The lettuce looks like escarole. Great as a salad and also sautéed with garlic and olive oil. You can add a can of cannellini beans to make a soup.

I grew up in Minnesota. I was in highschool before I really noticed that squash and wash are not spelled with an "r", so I stopped saying squarsh, warsh, and warshcloth. But my dear mom, still did, till she passed, and probably a good portion of the neighbors still do. :)))

I’ve heard “warsh” quite a bit, but this is the first time I’ve heard “squarsh” except maybe for dramatic effect when used as a verb as in, “I’ll squarsh you like a bug!” Not a criticism, just an observation.

My family found the same as you. The food didn’t last as long as what we buy at our local grocery. Also we bought 3 boxes to give it a real chance. We found that the portions started getting smaller. So we also cancelled our subscription.
Yes. I used them for 3 or 4 boxes. I found the produce did not remain usable for long at all.
I moved from a place where I had Whole Foods home delivery to a rural area where not one single store carries any organic food. Almost everything Misfits Market sends is organic. The packaging goes into my new compost heap.
I calculated the cost vs home delivery through Amazon previously, and was actually very pleased. I eat most of my $22 box within a few days. Years ago I temped over Christmas at a local grocery store in suburban DC, and they threw away so much good produce that the Chinese restaurant staff were dumpster diving in the grocery store’s trash and either eating it themselves or using it in their restaurant. Anything not perfect gets tossed.
By my own comparisons, my veg/fruit costs have gone down about 25%. I also have a serious health condition and so organic is a necessity for us. My husband doubted that it would work out, but he’s sold on it now too based only on the savings and they also have other markdown organic regular groceries that you can piggyback onto your order. I’m really happy with it overall.
One thing I do that really extends the life of my veg and fruit is to use a home ozone machine to make ozone water to rinse everything.
This is what restaurants do to keep food fresh. The ozone water kills common “rot” pathogens and will give you at minimum an extra week, but my veg lasts much much longer. The ozone machines are only ~$45 on Amazon and my son, a chef, suggested it to me because I’m often too fatigued to cook at the end of the day. Believe me, restaurants don’t waste much produce, and I never do. Doesn’t anyone feed their chickens potato peels? Yes, if you don’t care about glyphosate and you don’t have a problem getting into town and you can afford Whole Foods, etc etc maybe this isn’t for you. But we are very happy with the service. I got a deal on my husband’s favorite $4.99 cookies last week and he was miffed that I only got one bag!
I’ve lost 10 lbs since starting it because we buy more variety than we could even begin to locally, and it’s organic. It’s a 9 out of 10.
I love my Misfits subscription, but also understand that it doesn't suit everybody's wants and needs. The produce sections in our local grocery stores have been noticeably lacking during the pandemic. So I have been happy to have the option. Being real, some boxes seem to be a mega good deal and others not so much. It all seems to even out over time though.
Organic produce generally costs several times more than the other. Even on the markdown, you are not going to get organic produce for a dollar a pound in my area. One of the reasons that people prefer organic produce is that much of the other has been genetically modified so it will last longer on the shelf. These modifications frequently sacrifice taste for beauty and a long shelf life. When you factor in the shipping time with Misfits, you really do have to plan to eat it soon after you get it. I get the smaller box, which costs significantly less than the one reviewed and is the right amount of produce for my household to use before it goes bad. In an ideal world, I like to handpick all of my own stuff for both the best price and quality, but the fact that it is delivered cuts down on my in-store shopping time, and that has factored into many of my shopping decisions during the pandemic.
I'm new to this whole thing. What do you do with these foods? Do you have to buy additional things to complete a meal using this produce? Do you just pull out rand or hummus when you get celery? If you get beets, what do you do with those? I'm not very creative so I'm trying to understand if there's a way I can try and make this work.

I have a good joke relating to squash. I was in Walmart in the fall when all the winter squash comes into the store. I picked up a couple of each type and was checking out. The checker asked me what are you going to do with these? I told her well Inam going to eat them. She got a shocked look on her face and said oh really? I thought they were just for decorations. Really a grown woman told me this I couldn't help it I laughed out loud.

Many years ago, I’d shop in the locally owned market, and often had the same cashier. I think she looked forward to me, because she had a thousand questions about what things were (like tofu) and how to use them.
Do smaller groceries even attempt to get employees familiar with their products?
I've read that most of the pumpkins grown in the US are used only for carving jack 0 lanterns and fall decor, then they are thrown in the trash. When I see the huge displays of pumpkins in the fall and think of this all I can think is "what a waste!". I've grown pumpkins and they are prolific producers, but we can them or turn them into pumpkin powder for tossing into soups, chili's, quiches, baked goods - even when there are an overwhelming number to process I can't stomach the idea of throwing food away.

I am glad you did this because I have been wondering if it was a good deal. They only thing that was there that I buy organic is the celery.
My first box was left out overnight in winter in Western NY. So it froze. My lettuce ended up looking like that. No problems since but I have been able to bring it in right away and put it into ziplock bags that I always use for lettuce and wash and reuse. We don't have discount grocery stores and Wegmans doesn't sell any marked down items any more. So the price has been good for organic and I find that Aldi's and Walmart produce has to be used very quickly after purchase. That's just my experience. I know it's different for everyone. Could it be because it set on your doorstep overnight in freezing cold temps?
No nothing was frozen in the box so it was well insulated.
I've been seeing alot of ads for Misfit Market lately and wondered if it would be worth it to try. After seeing your video, I'm not going to try it. I can get apples at my local grocery store 6/1.50, I don't spend any where near $40 on produce in a month. Thanks for reviewing!
I’m in rural TN and I cannot even find regular apples for under $1.99/lb now, let alone organic ones. We are very happy with it. She didn’t explain how you get to choose what they send to you either. I am just now using up the fresh parsley I got last month and it still looks great. Why? I rinsed it the day it arrived. Big shock. Rinsing off dirt keeps it fresh.
Once produce has reached 35 degrees, ice crystals start to form in water!
And once they warm up, by bring them indoors, yes they will wilt fast. Causing the water to release from the broke cell walls, thereby you get mushy vegetables and fruits!
It’ looks like escarole( the first two lettuces) , a nice bitter winter lettuce-the packaging looks ok ( not plastic at least)- it’s a nice box actually.It is expensive though
Packaging? What did you expect when something is being shipped to prevent breakage, bruising etc
Well I get my bananas tomatoes and fancy apples on the sale table 25 cents apiece. Organic. And now I'm really Killin it at my new mennonite grocery store. 2.00 for a case of Lorna doones and 1 lb of lindt lender chocolate balls for 2.00 as well. Sooo glad God's blessing me. I grow food too. Oh and I live wayyy outta town. I don't think anyone can touch my savings at all. Could be your veggies trouble was being they were left out first night
How would you go about shipping those produce, still saving money for your client and getting the product the client in a good state?
I will go to the farmer's markets in the summer and support local farmers.
I received my first misfit order Wednesday. Yes the fruit and tomatoes were a little green. But they have ripened nicely the last few days. It looks better and tastes better than what our local grocery sells. There was a lot. But I doubt I buy it again.

I have been a Misfits Market customer for over a year. I have been very pleased with everything we've gotten with few exceptions. With the winter lettuce you must put it in a proper container such as Tupperware and maybe even in the vegetable bins in your refrigerators will be helpful. The tomatoes that were bruised needed to be used right away and can still be used it's just the top that was damaged apparently. Misfits uses produce that is in overabundance or is not the right size for the grocery stores. If you go to the store you'll notice for example cauliflower all seems to be pretty much the same size. It doesn't grow that way. Met the guy who invented the packaging for this produce and it had to be done in such a way that it fit a certain size cauliflower. This is all organic and some things may not last as long as others that are commercially produced. I really thought your review was not completely fair or researched well. I've gotten produce from them that I absolutely cannot get in the large metropolitan area I live in at certain times of the year. I also have found various ways to reuse the packaging.
It was nothing but a 100% RIP OFF! HUGE waste of money!

For wilted lettuce I let it sit in warm water for a few minutes, then drain and pour ice cold water with cubes and let soak for another few minutes and they are like new.
