@@soshiderek Many titles aren’t released on Blu-ray or 4K unfortunately, which does limit options. But would consumers buy lower budget/independent titles on say a 4K?
Production issues are chocking the supply of 4k UHD discs, there is now only one large scale production facility and they are running at capacity. This is the reason some titles are being delayed, and others sell out right away and take a while to come back into stock. They need to have product in the supply chain in order to have them on retail shelves. Additionally we (the collectors) need to buy from brick and mortar stores whenever product is available even if it costs an extra buck or two to do so. I have gotten so many damaged discs and cases from Amazon. I only buy from them when a movie is not at the store even when (as usual) they are cheaper. Studios are raising prices because they can. Supply and demand always operates if demand exceeds supply prices get stupid. This is just evidence that demand is still going, and they need more manufacturing capacity to meet demand.
@@johnhyatt4905 Do you think they could ramp up supply if they wanted to? Open new production facilities, etc? Or do most of the studios think it’s a format that is likely to go away so why put in any more effort than the bare minimum?
@@megamikethemovieman the manufacturer needs to make the investment in increasing capacity. The demand is there but I don’t know what the cost of increasing capacity would be. The studios are shooting their own foot by pushing so many cheap DVDs where the margin isn’t high enough to offset people who would buy Blu if the prices were closer. A five dollar DVD for a blind buy movie is an easy pill to swallow a blind buy twenty dollar Blu-ray, or thirty dollar 4k. If the studios drove DVD prices up to reduce the gap to HD, I believe, the increase in blu sales would be enough to increase revenue to offset the decline of DVD sales.
I no longer have any local brick and mortar options in my area. Best Buy is out. Walmart and Target are almost DVD-exclusive at this point, even for the little they still carry on shelves. That leaves Barnes & Noble who generally charges double in price I can get anywhere else online.
@@megamikethemovieman Criterion, yes. Arrow doesn’t really interest me much anymore. Those are the only two real instances though where you can buy titles at the store at competitive prices. I’d still rather give my business directly to Criterion, and also get the points for my purchase, but also because the last B&N Criterion Sale, I had a couple very inconvenient experiences with their website that caused me to have a lot of money be taken and held in limbo, and a drive to the store to do a return of a movie they had for pick up for me, tied to a separate purchase I made where they took my money without having the rest of my purchase in stock, and the only way to get that released was to go, pick up and return. It was a headache. Hundreds of dollars withheld from me for several days for nothing.
My screen size is 120 inches, on such a screen the difference between blu ray and 4k is so small that 4k just doesn't make sense... that's why I buy blu ray.
Even if it is difficult for the 4K collector community to understand, the fact is that the format has now shrunk to 6% even though it is October and horror films actually sell best, but the reality is different because 4K It's totally uninteresting for the mainstream, no matter how hard you try to say it well, if the mainstream doesn't jump on board. Even the normal Bluray has a better chance of surviving than the premium UHD format and if you read and heard that there were problems with playback and sound with the last release of A Nightmare Elm Street, then it's only logical that it would go down so much if so little quality control is put in place 🤷♂️ And at these prices, this should be a thing of the past if you ask me.
@@megamikethemovieman Maybe I can't say 100% because I prefer the normal Bluray as well as the DVD and by that I don't necessarily mean those overpriced limited editions from the various labels but I can tell you one thing, the 4K will have a hard time getting out there even if you wait for offers that won't change the fact that this is a premium product.

@megamikethemovieman I'm seeing lots of people making posts about getting their first DVDs or Blu-Rays lately, so I think that's part of these numbers. Honestly, I think buying physical media as Christmas gifts for friends and family who have a game console but no movies would be a good place to start. It doesn't have to be a lot but I wouldn't be shocked if someone who is given physical media would be more likely to buy more in the uture.

You know, I think most people don't care about quality. Most people seem to watch movies on their phones, Ipad and smart tvs with netflix on. As long as most people can watch films via the cheapest and most convenient way possible than its good enough for them. I don't think most people would want to spend an additional $90 or more just to watch a movie where the actors skin can be seen more clearly. Also, dvds can be played on a pc and laptop while you need to install additional softwares which costs more. Personally, I watch more things on streaming services than physical media, but if I do buy physical media, I prefer to buy the cheapest option, and that is DVD ( sometimes, bluray if it cheap). @@elportosurfbum1562 Especially for Boutique labels I always wait for the sales. What are your favorite boutiques to collect from right now?
UHD price is still extremely expensive compared to dvd there's no comparison you can get dvd at bargain price this day plus newer dvd player already have 1080p upscale this makes dvd attractive and 4k player can upscale dvd to 4k resolution which is amazing.
Those prices are outrageous on 4Ks. How do you like Blu-ray’s in comparison to DVDs? Blu-ray’s can sometimes be found cheap if they are older releases.
@megamikethemovieman of course some bluray are cheap I don't think it's gonna catch up with dvd I'll still buy DVD because they're cheap used dvd is also attractive oh my player is Panasonic ub420 it can upscale dvd to 4k it's WOW 👌. I think DVD market shares can give streaming a HUGE headache I'll rather buy dvd than paying monthly streaming fees it's not even yours. As for 4k why would they release a limited steel case it's just a money grab UHD is already expensive now with steel case is even more expensive. I'll wait for ⚫️ black Friday dvd are great for tv shows that you missed as a child Alias dvd is the best 👌 Jennifer Garner. I even brought CHIPS on dvd it's a nostalgia because I didn't get to watch those as a child. I remember watching CHIPS on a tiny TV now I have projector. Also Scooby Do original series brings back my childhood.
@@zztop7000 What’s some of your favorite episodes from classic Scooby Doo? And what are your favorite Scooby Doo movies?
Price increases. And could it also be the kind of movie (blockbuster/not) releases?
@@soshiderek Many titles aren’t released on Blu-ray or 4K unfortunately, which does limit options. But would consumers buy lower budget/independent titles on say a 4K?
Depends on the film's success in theatres or how marketing one gets.
@@SumDumGy Do you go to Barnes & Noble for their Criterion and Arrow sales? That’s the only time I go to them.
@@ВікТор-м8с That’s understandable. Do you get alot of new releases Blu-ray’s day 1 or do you wait for sales and discounts?
Even if it is difficult for the 4K collector community to understand, the fact is that the format has now shrunk to 6% even though it is October and horror films actually sell best, but the reality is different because 4K It's totally uninteresting for the mainstream, no matter how hard you try to say it well, if the mainstream doesn't jump on board.
Even the normal Bluray has a better chance of surviving than the premium UHD format and if you read and heard that there were problems with playback and sound with the last release of A Nightmare Elm Street, then it's only logical that it would go down so much if so little quality control is put in place 🤷♂️
And at these prices, this should be a thing of the past if you ask me.
@@Horror_Collector4Life Do you think Blu-ray will ever be adopted by the mainstream over DVD? What would it take to make that happen?
@@megamikethemovieman Maybe I can't say 100% because I prefer the normal Bluray as well as the DVD and by that I don't necessarily mean those overpriced limited editions from the various labels but I can tell you one thing, the 4K will have a hard time getting out there even if you wait for offers that won't change the fact that this is a premium product.
Don't be so surprised by the % it's only recently that 4Ks have jumped in numbers. Pre-pandemic it was DVDs 75%, Blu-rays 20% and 4Ks 5%! Maybe the lots of 4Ks boxed sets that have come out in the last four years raised the numbers. A lot of special editions and boxed sets of horror have been released since the pandemic.
@@HECTORMONTALVO-le9cn I wonder if prices have a lot to do with it as well. There are still some awesome box sets being released, just way overpriced so they are not selling as well. Do you think they will ever lower prices to try and sell more 4Ks?
@megamikethemovieman well I can only speak for horror. Yeah horror collector's editions and boxed sets have gotten ridiculously expensive not only 4Ks but Blu-rays as well. Especially from Severin and Vinegar Syndrome. I remember the Black Emmanuelle boxed set was $300 but granted it included a lot of movies but still. And the recent Texas Chainsaw Massacre collector's edition Chainsaw boxed set with a plastic Chainsaw for $300! Did you see that one? Still some horror fans bought it.🤔
@@HECTORMONTALVO-le9cn I definitely ranted on that chainsaw Boxset! Why do you think collectors still bought that one. Were they just massive fans of the movie?
@@megamikethemovieman definitely lol!😂
If phyiscal media sales are up overall I bet many newcomers to collecting are getting DVDs and that pushes down the percentage of UHD sales. Especially if those folks are collecting casually.
@@actualnotanewbie Do you think we are getting much newcomers to collecting? Maybe mid to older generations but I don’t see younger generations being that interested in collecting or even movies sadly. What do you think we could do to boost physical media overall?
@megamikethemovieman I'm seeing lots of people making posts about getting their first DVDs or Blu-Rays lately, so I think that's part of these numbers. Honestly, I think buying physical media as Christmas gifts for friends and family who have a game console but no movies would be a good place to start. It doesn't have to be a lot but I wouldn't be shocked if someone who is given physical media would be more likely to buy more in the uture.
@ That’s a great point and strategy! Having people test it out. Because there’s probably many younger generations that haven’t even put a disc in any player, they probably don’t know the difference right?
All this shows that the price tag for physical media has gone way over board & The regular physical media buyers either have stop buying physical media all together or have cut way back on buying. Bc of the higher price tag now. And all this higher price tag doing is killing off physical media sooner. Bc the price tag now for physical media is so ridiculous high now its turned off alot of people from buying physical media now. All I am saying if the studios & small labels don't get these ridiculous higher price tags under control soon we could see the start of the death of physical media. And I for one does not want that to happen bc of how much I love buying & collecting the movies I want to own
@@tomboling2309 Agreed, they need to get those prices under control. But then how come those outrageously priced 4K steelbooks for Deadpool and Wolverine still sold out? 🤣
@@megamikethemovieman the only reason those steelbooks sold out so fast. Is bc Disney did not make as many as they did for the regular bluray & 4k release
@@tomboling2309 That makes sense. So they tried driving up demand by limiting the supply? I wonder if they are going to do that with all their steelbooks going forward?

@@craigosterberg5045 Thank you. Stay awesome my friend!
The people who choose to buy physical media will likely buy dvds as they are the cheapest option. Also, dvds can be played on a pc and laptop while you need to install additional softwares which costs more. Personally, I watch more things on streaming services than physical media, but if I do buy physical media, I prefer to buy the cheapest option, and that is DVD ( sometimes, bluray if it cheap). To me, dvd is good enough, especially since my tv is 37 inch plasma from 2009. I can play it on my pc with no hassle or issues.
Makes sense, DVD is the most popular format for all those reasons you mentioned. I wonder why they never upgraded pcs to be able to play Blu-ray’s?
@@megamikethemovieman I'm not roonsure, but when I brought my new pc, it comes with a disc drive and the disc toninstall features is a DVD disc and not bluray. Maybe DVD is still a popular and reliable disc compared to bluray.
Kids films make up for a large part of DVD sales. No, kids don't care about resolution. Parents, for the most part, are not going to drop $30-40 for a film they can get on DVD for 5-10.

No, but the format is being suffocated by studios, boutiques and retailers.
The format is not dying but it remains a niche product for high-end collectors who also have an expensive home cinema.
As much as I love 4k blurays, the players are still too expensive for anyone that wants to get into the format. Lowest price player I've seen is about $150 if you don't want a game console like the PS5. At least 4K tvs are starting to get more affordable depending on your budget.
