This is a great knot. It was easy to learn, but took me a while to speed it up. Now I can tie my shoelaces in about half the time it takes anyone else. Extremely useful for people of all ages.
I found your book when I was 13 years old (23 now). When I came across the Ian knot, I was dumbfounded that I had been taught this inept "bunny ears" crap all my life. Has helped me , and will continue to for the rest of my life. Thanks Ian. -Ian

I think the problem is I learned one technique while so young that I just stuck with it and never questioned it since. This is awesome and I'll use this from now on :) But as they say, old habits die hard and the muscle memory makes it super hard to learn this and even more make it the standard.
You're spot on with the "muscle memory" thing. Even I had a hard time "un-learning" my old habit, and often found myself un-tying the regular knot (which I'd tied automatically), then re-tying with my new technique. I hope you persist until the "Ian Knot" becomes second nature for you.
Great tutorial! I've always been terrible at tying my shoes in the "traditional" way... This one is so much simpler for me! The tutorial was completely fine, the only thing that could possibly be causing some people problems is the fact that the angle is facing the shoe, which is not how you would be tying a shoe... But I was still able to learn regardless!

I haven't broken a shoelace in almost 20 years either, but my theory is that the quality of materials used in shoelaces has improved. On the other hand, the quality of shoes has dropped dramatically, and the days of replacing shoe laces are just about done. Great video, and a new knot to add to my repertoire, thanks!
You're right that shoelaces have improved, and are now generally made of polyester rather than cotton. Many shoes also don't have metal eyelets, so there are other contributing factors. But I do hear of others who break shoelaces, so it must still happen. In any case, congratulations on learning the Ian Knot!

Thank you Ian, for demonstrating and naming this shoe lacing method : ). I've learned it a few days ago from some other bloke on TH-cam, but he had no name for the knot making it harder to refer to, and your explanation is better and will eliminate my fails. I know understand the knot better! Also, thank you for naming the many advantages. It makes me happy to start 2016, at age 42, with this new skill. Better late than never! And I will teach my kids, too. One (8) knows how to using the something around the Tree method, but his football shoe laces (only laced shoes he owns, we are velcro believers honestly) are a bit short to easily use it. Now you've saved me the trouble and expense of bying new, longer laces! Our youngest (5) has yet to learn tying her shoes. No laced shoes for her, yet. Maybe she'll get some laced Wheelies for her birthday... that would be a brilliant moment to start learning. The easy way straight away! I'll also share your vlog with parents and teachers I know. It is a wonderful idea for parents and kids to learn this together, don't you think? PS For precision (interesting, how after 25 takes this thought has not yet crossed your mind, also makes me wonder, what went wrong/differently in those), I'd have to say it is not the Ian Knot; rather, something like the Ian Lace. Following your logic at the end of the vlog, Bunny, Tree and Ian Lacing all produce the exact same Knot. My dad (RIP) was a mathematician, I generally don't have a clue having studied psychology myself, but sometimes a bit of his thoroughness seeps through me LOL. hey, i watched this video and learned this method about 6 or 7 years ago. i had to come back to thank you for saving me time and teaching me this superior way of tying shoelaces. i’ve forgotten the “normal” way by now
To tie each shoelace like this, in total it'll take maybe 5 seconds, we tie our shoelaces maybe 2 or 3 times a day, 15 seconds all in. Normal shoelace tie technique will maybe take 10 seconds, so 30 seconds in total every day of tying your shoelaces using the usual method. So you save 15 seconds each day with the Ian Knot. 105 seconds a week or 5,460 seconds a year, over an average lifetime of 80 years, that's 436,800 seconds or 121 hours and 20 minutes or just over 5 solid days of your life that you will free up by using this knot instead of the alternatives. In 5 days you could go on the best vacation ever just by not wasting those seconds looping the loop. If we are to assume that all 1.24 million viewers of this video are now using this knot then that's 6.2 million days of peoples lives saved or 17 thousand years! Well done, sir! Worth it!

I've been using this knot for ages now, and it's really great. I remember finding your site many years ago and learning the knot from a video - I still have the "Ian knot - the world's fastest shoelace knot" stuck in my mind from watching the video back then. I taught it to my brother when he was learning to tie his shoelaces, and he found it much easier to learn than other knots. It's also fun to show to other people; it's amazing how much you can wow someone by tying one's shoes.
It would be much easier for us to copy what you're doing if the video was from your perspective (camera over your shoulder) rather than having the camera in front of you.

Sure! My "Ian Knot Detailed Tutorial" video (th-cam.com/video/_O-xaJrao1w/w-d-xo.html) has instructions about this. First, at about 2 mins 10 secs, it details a way to orient the loops by "swinging" the laces. Secondly, at about 4 mins 30 secs, it shows how to swing one way for the Starting Knot and the opposite way for the Finishing Bow. Good luck!

I've been using the Ian knot since 1995, IIRC. I found an animated tutorial for it on a BBS while in the US Navy stationed in Japan. All of my kids use it, too. So much easier, I can tie it in complete darkness. Also, if you double knot it, it doesn't come loose, but can be untied just by pulling one end (aglet). Thanks!

Every time I can't tie knots, I need more angles to see it, what are you doing? how do they stay as loops? why do they keep falling apart! Every time I try it, they just keep flinging themselves out of the knot.
You should make a loose loop in the front in the left hand and a loose loop in the back in the right hand. You bring them together and pull the *LOOSE LOOPS* through the other hand. Keep practicing until you find a suitable position and method.
Just come across your videos and I can't believe I've been tying my shoe laces the wrong way most of my life! As they always come undone! I will be trying this from now on. Thank you ✨

Thanks, Kat. You're right, the "Ian Knot" uses both hands fairly equally, so there is less "handedness" coming into the equation. Your leftie son may in future find himself teaching a rightie pupil, so it makes sense not to teach him a specific leftie knot.

This took me about 20 minutes of constant failing following the instructions, step by step. I kept at it and then it "clicked." Now I can skip the "steps" and do it just as smoothly as this video. My life is changed.

After 40 years of bunny ears, I thought there had to be something better. I tried the one loop knot for two weeks, but my OCD can't handle the fact it's asymmetrical. Thank you for sharing the Ian knot! It took me 5 minutes to get decently fast at it.

Well done. All the rest are bumblers. You demonstrate the process almost as well as possible. I would suggest starting with the lace ends out straight, and with both hands 'facing' the right or both hands facing the left, then pinch and continue. The next challenge is tying this knot tightly with slippery cord under tension. (Hint: use a spare finger to maintain tension in the initial overhand.)

You're right that it's challenging tying the Ian Knot tightly with slippery shoelaces. All I can say is that this comes with experience, as is also the case when anyone first learns the regular shoelace knot.
I think I learned this knot from reddit when I was 15 (26 now) can’t even imagine the amount of time I’ve saved through the years and how much I’ll save in the future!

I've been using this knot for ages now, and it's really great.
I remember finding your site many years ago and learning the knot from a video - I still have the "Ian knot - the world's fastest shoelace knot" stuck in my mind from watching the video back then.
I taught it to my brother when he was learning to tie his shoelaces, and he found it much easier to learn than other knots.
It's also fun to show to other people; it's amazing how much you can wow someone by tying one's shoes.

+ProfessorShoelace I'm trying to do the first knot the same way by pulling the loops all the way through, but as someone who has been using your knot for years, it's so hard and confusing to reverse the finger positions in order not to end up with a granny knot. Muscle memory is a hell of a thing!

Sure! My "Ian Knot Detailed Tutorial" video (th-cam.com/video/_O-xaJrao1w/w-d-xo.html) has instructions about this. First, at about 2 mins 10 secs, it details a way to orient the loops by "swinging" the laces. Secondly, at about 4 mins 30 secs, it shows how to swing one way for the Starting Knot and the opposite way for the Finishing Bow. Good luck!

I've been using the Ian knot since 1995, IIRC. I found an animated tutorial for it on a BBS while in the US Navy stationed in Japan. All of my kids use it, too. So much easier, I can tie it in complete darkness. Also, if you double knot it, it doesn't come loose, but can be untied just by pulling one end (aglet). Thanks!

Every time I can't tie knots, I need more angles to see it, what are you doing? how do they stay as loops? why do they keep falling apart! Every time I try it, they just keep flinging themselves out of the knot.
You should make a loose loop in the front in the left hand and a loose loop in the back in the right hand. You bring them together and pull the *LOOSE LOOPS* through the other hand. Keep practicing until you find a suitable position and method.

I never actually learned the "normal knot" always thought it was too complicated. I always did the bunny ears method until I found this video around 8 years ago. Now I'm 18 and I can't express how much the Ian knot helped me.

This is brilliant! I'm left handed (but taught by right handers- always frustrated as a little kid) and looking up ways to teach my leftie son to tie shoes- The Ian Knot wins!
Thanks, Kat. You're right, the "Ian Knot" uses both hands fairly equally, so there is less "handedness" coming into the equation. Your leftie son may in future find himself teaching a rightie pupil, so it makes sense not to teach him a specific leftie knot.

Holy shoelaces Bateman! I got it!!!! Only took me two tries. I didn't get it the first time because my laces were bent the same direction. I'm going to try and teach my toddler.

As an autistic child, I never learned how to tie my shoes, and my parents quickly gave up trying to teach me the bunny ears method. I shamefully admitted I'd probably never learn how to.
Over 20 years later I found a video showing the Ian knot and could do it after about half an hour of practice. I find it much easier and knots finally make sense to me!

Well done. All the rest are bumblers. You demonstrate the process almost as well as possible. I would suggest starting with the lace ends out straight, and with both hands 'facing' the right or both hands facing the left, then pinch and continue.
The next challenge is tying this knot tightly with slippery cord under tension. (Hint: use a spare finger to maintain tension in the initial overhand.)

You're right that it's challenging tying the Ian Knot tightly with slippery shoelaces. All I can say is that this comes with experience, as is also the case when anyone first learns the regular shoelace knot.
