Here's one trick I use when I need to tie tightly. Just after feeding both loops through the “hole” - and just *before* pulling tight - put your fingers inside the hole and pull outwards to re-tighten the Starting Knot.
Came across this and can't wait to try it on my shorts and sweats. So TIRED of having to stop to prevent them from falling down when I put anything of weight in the pockets (wallet, phone, etc)!
I don't bother with the starting knot because that already is taken care of by the lacing passing under and crossing inside the pants before emerging out of the holes. Just snug up and tie the finishing Ian knot. It takes some practice to maintain tension while tying the Ian knot. Somehow, your hands will figure it out. Hands have an intelligence of their own. Works great with surgical scrubs. Your double Ian knot as shown would be handy in that situation because you wouldn't want to be known, for the next thirty years, as the surgeon who had to have a nurse pull his scrub pants back up during a critical procedure. I still have your book and consider it one of my prized possession. So glad to see you are still very active in the world of knots and sports wear.
True, a regular “Ian Knot” will suffice for many situations. But the possibility of surgical scrubs falling down during a procedure sounds justification enough to adopt this more secure knot!
There is a short section of shoelace that passes *under* the middle of the knot. This has a short loop extending out either side of the knot. Pull either (or both) of those short loops to untie.
Hey, I haven't tried this knot yet, but I'm looking for one that can keep my sweatpants tight, in the sense that I don't feel weighed down by my phone and stuff being in my pockets, so I don't have to pull my sweatpants up. Does this work, if so, how?
I've usually just cut the loop so I have two loose ends. The disadvantage is an end can get pulled into the waist band, from which it is difficult or impossible to retrieve. I'll use this from now on.
TH-cam should have annual contest for most useful idea. I would vote this #1! Ian, I have your mobile app. I don't believe this is on it, or am just not finding it?
You're right, George, this knot isn't yet in the app, nor is it on my website. I need to draw up a set of diagrams. Just one of several knots still on my “to-do” list.
That's puzzling! If the loops are totally independent, my guess is that you tie using just the big loop. Maybe you then tuck the whole finished bundle through the small loop?
You should be awarded Nobel peace prize for ur contribution towards humanity...thanks a lot sir
I'm not sure the Nobel committee would agree, even if the sweatpants-wearing community is pretty huge. Regardless, I'm happy to have been of help.
Glad you're still uploading!
It has been a while, sorry. (So much to do, so little time.) Glad you enjoyed the video.
You deserve Noble prize ...for this...
Well thank you, the video was made with “noble” intent. I'm pleased that you've found the knot worthwhile.
So without wearing the shorts it's easy, my problem is adjusting it already on. when I tie the knot the waist loosens!😢

@@ProfShoelace omg! it works! many years looking for the solution! thank you so much Prof Laces!😃
After one year...i am back here again.

You're welcome - and welcome back! I'm pleased that you were able to learn another knot.
you had my curiosity, now you have my atention
If this knot has your attention, then I'm guessing that it helped? If so, then that's terrific!
@@ProfShoelace yes, thank you!
AINT NOBODY GOT TIME FOR THIS
Those sweatpants drawstrings *are* tiresome...
You came here by choice. There are many other knots listed on the website.
Came across this and can't wait to try it on my shorts and sweats. So TIRED of having to stop to prevent them from falling down when I put anything of weight in the pockets (wallet, phone, etc)!
This knot should hold so well that your only remaining fear should be your pockets ripping from testing them with too much weight!

While undoing the knot, why only the shorter cord is to be pulled? What if the longer one is cut short?

Wow! It really is rocket science to tie the damn things!
I agree! Who on earth thought up the continuous loop style?

If your sweatpants have a similarly looped drawstring, this knot will certainly work!

Interesting! I hope you get the hang of this technique so that you end up with a securely knotted - yet still intact - drawstring loop.
Tie it when you wash it and make big knots when you wash it it won’t go through if you tie

My shorts have 2 loops. One big loop and then a small one at the top idk how to tie it 😂

I like your videos
Thanks!
Nice! Can I send you my favorite pair of sweatpants and have you do this? Lol. The drawstring hangs down to my knees.
Wow - talk about excess length! Unless, of course, you have a very slim waist?
@@ProfShoelaceI'd say average at about 34 waste. The size is XL because I like my sweatpants nice and baggy.
Aahh - that explains it! XL sweatpants on M waist = XXXL loops.
How can you make it tighter or looser while wearing the pants otherwise it’s useless imo
This knot isn't “permanent”. It can still be untied and retied at will - just like the knot you might currently be using.
It should be velcro.
Wait - you said the “V” word!
thanks!
You're most welcome.
Thanks, I have a headache now.
Wait - I think you're using the knot on the wrong part of your body!
This does not work
It may not be EASY, but trust me - it DOES work.
