I don't care if you are doing the same job as me. If I do it with better quality, if I add more value, if i have been doing it longer and thus have more experience and if I work more hours than you, you should not get paid the same as me.

      Agreed with you.
Especially if you've been working there longer and the new hire gets paid more than you, I would've look for another job at the that point.

      how big was the difference?
One thing i notice is others who say this but how do you determine the sameness in the job? did you literally do the exact same thing in both jobs?

Every job has varied nuances and responsibilities. But the Bureau of Labor Statistics at least gives a baseline for what the jobs in your industry pay in your area. Not every employer can pay the most, but it’s good to see them get to the median hourly wage if you are a valuable worker. I find the “every job is different” argument to be a bit of a distraction. In my opinion, it doesn’t justify employers paying as little as they can get away with.

Great response! I got hired at my job 1 week before the lock down at a rather low pay cause they didn’t really need me. Now almost two years in they are hiring people at a high wage because they are desperate. I have gotten a few raises but nothing compared to what the new people make. I know this cause I’ve talked to a few people and saw the job post on Indeed. I’ve been told to approach my manager about it but it’s harder than it looks.

    • @johnmcnamara8741

My advice, if you approach your manager have something ready to fall back on, like a new job or savings. Take with a grain of salt and do you. Wish you the best because that is a shit situation, and it’s fucked up.

Find out your company’s budget/raise cycles. Set up a meeting, and “What can I do to improve my chances of getting a significant raise at my next review, in order to get the fair pay that company is offering for my role”.. something along those lines. Go prepared with what you do, what you do that goes beyond your role, and facts of what your industry currently pays and what your company is paying you vs what they currently pay for the role, go in with facts and be prepared for some feedback. If they don’t listen and try to come up with a growth plan to get you increased fairly, than you should move on and get a raise by going to another company that will pay your worth. Hope that makes sense! Best of luck! :)

I’ve been in this situation and I immediately quit when I found out and got a better paying job.
Edit: I should also point out that when I was hired, they told me that the amount of pay they offered me was the most they could give, despite my extensive experience; hence the reason I quit immediately after learning I was lied to and my coworkers were making much more than I was. 😤

see the problem is there can be a miltitude of reasons why they did this. They easily could have paid more to newer highers or to hire people quicker. They could have done it because someones pay was determined by a different person. They could have done it because your a poor negotator. They could have done this because they havent given anyone a raise in a while that doesnt match new hires wage adjustments.
Some of those can be corrected others good luck.

It feels hurtful because it leaves you feel like you aren't valuable. I found out for the second time since starting my new job 2 months ago that new hires are getting paid more than myself. I get minimum wage right now + the new hires are getting more even doing the same job. It hurts me + makes me mad as well.

but why does it surprise you. When they do new hires they have a need for that position, meaning they need more of those people or they need a new position they didnt need before, those already there are filling that void. I understand asking for a raise and considering leaving if there answer isnt adiquite but i don't know why it surprises anyone that this happens.

She said the new hire is a contractor ( I think I heard that), they are often paid more as they don't qualify for benefits or have taxes taken out. They usually get paid more gross, that could be the reason here. If you do the math of what the contractor pays for things you may have deducted automatically, its probably the same. JMO

If I find out that a Co-Worker is being paid more than me, but has less company seniority and/or seniority in rank; then, I'd definitely want to know why. What would i need to do, to get to that level?
1-I can understand previous experience with another job, as a factor.
2- I can also understand, moving in from another job market, but with a higher cost of living. However, when it came to the annual raise, that person might not get a raise, because of reaching or exceeding a "salary cap", in the current area he/she is in.
3-I can even understand a person who had a higher position within a company, but took a demotion and a pay cut.
My biggest "concern" about a pay difference, is how big the pay difference is. I'd also question, what type of work that person invests into the job conpared to mine. I wouldnt let this concern, end up causing an ulcer.

Overheard the pay band of someone who joined our company. He had a senior grade to me and was on at least 30% more, yet he was a 9 to 5er working on projects I was leading and busting a gut to do so. The company gave me a load of flannel when I raised the issue and said I could make the next grade in a couple of years by building a case, but the rise would only be a few percent because that's the way it works. Ended up leaving and getting a package similar to what the new guy was on; more senior grade, much better money. When I handed my notice in it was quite satisfying to hear my boss admit 'we're fucked.' of course nobody is indispensable. They struggled for a couple of years but eventually built a bigger team and are doing well again.

You get paid what you negotiate for. This is the difference between someone who does research on their market value. You make the money when you are in the interview not years after you get hired. Just think about it. If you are a company you want to pay as little as possible for skilled work to turn a profit. Your job as a future employee of the company is to convince them that they can't hire you for cheap or someone of the same quality. My best advice is to look for another job and focus on learning how much you can earn and ask for it during that interview not after.

Nope, this is what’s happening to me right now. I was just in a meeting with our program director who has been trying to desperately hire but no one was biting and even if they interviewed and were hired most never even showed up to work. I mentioned that it may be the low hiring wage so he brought it up in their management meeting and got them to agree to push up the hiring wage. Meanwhile, overloaded with work because we are low on staff, I am not even making what they are offering new hires and I will be training the new hires. I’m kind of pissed and no, there will be no, “chin up”. It will be a request for a raise to actually exceed what the new hires are offered or I will be leaving. I will leave knowing that the job is not easy and that it is highly likely that those new hires will end up leaving very soon, they all do. There is a learning curve for these greedy agencies and they don’t get it until they have to step in to do the work themselves when there is no one else there to do it. I have also seen that happen and they could not handle it which made them quit themselves. Oh well’

I don’t care about tenure. If the new guy is out performing the old timers, he should be getting more. The truth is, everyone wants more. We would all like to be making $100 an hour but the reality is there’s only so much money to go around. It’s the job of the company to allocate that money to the ones they feel will keep the ship sailing so everyone could have a job. The idea is to become that valuable asset and take what’s yours.

Im living through this now but mine is more justified... Years of experience but the new ladies are getting the bosses attention and got put over me rise and promotion wise ... One of them i found out by accident but the other was blatantly put over move me the same day i was offered the postion .... Ao now i have to be advising , helping them both while coving for other coworkers for 3 weeks im asked to train another for mt job as they secretly plan to hire to get rid of one of the guys im covering for .... I initially said no cause i e been training all the applications that have recently came in so even tho im not doing it now i asked that the other coworker im covering for be the one to train this next person when he gets back ( cause theres no reason the person they asked to be trained needs to be train asap ) i got them pissed off and found out how they thought its appart of my job and that they said how theylls start puttting it the job description going forward blah blah blah, i relented and said yes to training the other person... Then came to find out its gonna be 2 people lol while the new manager above me couldn't do it and then found out one of the new girls was getting a raise to match my pay after only being in the industry for 3 or 4 months ... Its as if they forgot abour everything i djd for this company and only focused on me saying now to not training. Lol am i wrong for feeling angey about this ?
And yeah the manager girl cheated on her work blatantly and often

If you're a man getting paid less than your female colleague for the same role ( significantly and not taking into account certain %s due to negotiation, experience etc ) it's because of "gender pay equity" ideology where they justify paying men less to ensure the company average is equitable for women ( also taking into account your male CEO'S exhuberant salary into the equation ). If the company average shows women get paid collecrively more it is seen as positive.
So middle to lower earning men, were screwed by identity politics.

This is legitimately ridiculous advice. “Keep your chin up and take it”
When the market changes and talent is demanding higher wages, your employees who have been at your company shouldn’t be devalued. This is a classic brush off and you should feel ashamed of yourself.
