Persona 5 Tactica Is A Good Game

  • The only reason Zenkichi isn't in this game is cuz it takes place in February during P5, but theres zero reason for it to have taken place there and could have easily taken place during the Winter Break following Strikers. Let me cope, alright!

To give an extra point of reference, P5T's very in-line with the Q games. The story even follows basically the exact same structure those ones did. So if a PQ with tactics gameplay and just P5 characters sounds like something you'd like you probably will.

It should have just been a pQ title and had the full freaking cast, especially for a tactics game!

I'm glad someone pointed this out. I'm almost done with the game and while I'm enjoying the story, I couldn't help but notice how similar in structure the story is to the PQ games.
It does personally make me happy since PQ are my favorite Persona spin-off series, so having a P5-PQ type of experience has been far up my alley.

@@karmskorner6430 Personally I'm fine with it. The P5 cast have some of the best group dynamics in the series, so if anyone was able to carry a quirky chibi spinoff game, it was them. Plus having to focus on less characters meant there was a lot less of the akihiko protein or yusuke is broke so therefore hungry type jokes that plagued the Q games.

9:12 Counterpoint: While DeSu does look visually more interesting than Tactica, you don't give enough credit to P5T for its seamless implementation of verticality into the combat system, imo granting it the far more interesting map catalog than either of the DeSu games, which are comparatively quite uninteresting with little going on in their layouts. The way that many of these arenas are designed are actually quite clever with how it handles enemy placement, and how it rewards you for taking full advantage of all of the factors in each map.

  • @OtakuNewsSource

One extra thing I want to say regarding the story is that while we don't really see any new sides of the P5 cast as you mentioned, I do appreciate the moments when the Phantom Thieves relate to the problems Toshiro and Erina face.
Light spoilers but I love seeing Haru relate to Toshiro when it comes to doing things to appease your father despite it not being what you really want to do, or Ryuji letting Toshiro know he understands what it's like to have a rough time in school with teachers, but you have to keep moving forward.
It's stuff like this that stands out to me a lot and helps with the writing to make it where the P5 cast doesn't feel off from a writing perspective.

I will say I'm absolutely loving this game. It fills the void that wanted more P5 content but also wanted more PQ content. I think it's top 5 when it comes to Persona spin-offs. Maybe even top 3. The best spin-off is still Persona 5 Strikers followed by Persona Q2, but after that it's really a toss up between P4 Ultimax and P5 Tactica. I'll probably see how I feel once the credits roll (in endgame territory right now) on whether I definitively like it more than Ultimax, but it's great stuff all around.
Now to wait for P3 Reload coming out in...3 months!

Its a tactical RPG IMO. What I consider true strategy RPGs are very rare, and even rarer on consoles. The gameplay in tactical RPGs focus on individual battles while strategy RPGs focus more on running a war or campaign. For example I would list the Ogre Battle games as Strategy RPGs but the Tactics Ogre, Fire Emblem, Valkyria Chronicles, this, and the Devil Survivor games all as tactical RPGs.
I'm having a lot of fun with Tactica so far though a few of the sidequests were frustrating, and I really wish you could deploy a larger force. Three member parties are ok for nrmal RPGs but tactical RPGs are more fun with a larger force in play IMO. I'm still early in the second kingdom.

Got to hand it to this game for having about 100 different songs in it. It's not the most memorable soundtrack they've produced, but I admire the dedication. Also, while the story isn't amazing or anything, I still enjoyed it. I loved the story it told with Toshiro and Erina (arguably, it's better than Zenkichi and Sophia from P5S).
8/10 game for me, second best spinoff they've made

P5 tactica is of course a tactical rpg,I doubt strategy rpg even exist.
English is not my mother tongue ,so explaining the difference between tactics and strategy is very difficult for me.
But in short ,strategy is the ultimate goal , tactic is how you achieve that goal ,for example,my strategy is not to let my enemy get a piece of land on the sea so he can't access the sea freely and not compromise my control over the sea , that's my strategy, and it is absolute,it can't change,it is my ultimate goal , tactics is the way I do it ,I can do it with diplomacy by letting others take over those lands or by conquering them myself and so on . tactics can change , strategy can't.
Tactics is what you do now to achieve your strategy.
    Tactic is present,strategy is future.
Persona or the other tactic rpg can't be strategic cause they have a story and chose the path for you ,they let you choose how to fight (tactic) but they don't let you have a strategy of your own in mind .
Civilization or Europa universalis are strategy games cause they let you decide the strategy of your country.
    I hope my explanation was understandable....I'm sure I made a mess😂😂

Some points are valid, but being mad that the game needs to make an excuse to have gameplay is really not a good point (, like who doesn't want an excuse for more gameplay?) Personally I welcome the excuses because I really hated the long dragged out story bits in P5 before a palace was introduced. I felt like some of those parts could have been written to be shorter in P5/P5R. I think the level design for the most part is fine. They do change it up enough that it isn't a bore to look at, but the only exception to this is the final Kingdom, but this seems to be deliberately done due to story reasons (not sure what to think about that).
I actually really like the artstyle of P5T more so than the PQ series (I don't like PQ's artstyle). The chibi artstyle is all about deformity and PQ's artstyle has a character's body that's a bit too realistic and clashes with the chibi looking heads of the character. P5T embraces deformity to its fullest giving it a really stylized look. I think the P5T artstyle is more well suited for the game despite everyone else's very menkui complaints. If the artstyle (plus colorization) was normal then it would be tough to make out details when you have to really zoom out to look at the whole map.

The tactical RPG gameplay is what had me much more excited about P5T than P3R.
And the combat is great. The main thing that stops it being a 10/10 game is how starting the game feels like turning on the TV halfway through a movie.
You get zero introduction to the world, the protagonist or any of the 'phantom thieves', and it's so disconcerting how a character called Ryuji will appear, say one line, and the next time we see them their name is 'Skull' and they are wearing completely different clothes.
Like, Atlus had to have known that two groups are going to be buying this game - existing Persona fans, and the millions of TTRPG fans who have never played a Persona game before.

As far as the difference between Strategy RPG and a Strategy Game, I think it has to do with characters. SRPGs, you're typically controlling unique characters. In strategy games, Not so much, since you can create units on an assembly line, which makes them feel less like people and more like equipment or machines that you order around. Is there really a difference between one marine and another? No, Barracks in Starcraft churn out the same ones every time. While unit classes might be represent with a portrait that has a personality, the unit types all exhibit the same personality.

I'm actually really down with the Tactica artstyle. It's very cute but also cool, like Panty and Stocking. The gameplay? Not so much. Was never a fan of the XCOM/Mario+Rabbids gameplay style and tactical RPGs are REALLY hard to sell me on since I usually suck at them. They have to have some sort of cool gimmick to get me hooked like FE Three Houses persona-esque time management and life simulation elements and DeSu's replayability and heavy RPG mechanics. Honestly the more RPG mechanic heavy and the less "strategic" a SRPG is the more likely I'll get invested. Also SRPG and TRPG are literally the same thing. People only get confused because of snobbish PC RPG fans insist that their "manly mature strategy games" like Total War, Civilization, or Starcraft aren't the same genre as actually fun anime tactics games like Fire Emblem or DeSu. They are, no matter how much anime hating neckbeard dudebros like to say otherwise.

I think the SRPG and TRPG differences are essentially kinda JRPGs and western RPGs. S is closer to XCOM, with a focus on cover and shooting, T is closer to Fire Emblem. This is only what I think but that would make P5T a SRPG. Idk, genre names are stupid and people get too caught up over them, I vote we call every a -like. XCOM and P5T are MarioRabbid-likes

Seems like it. Persona 5 is nearly a decade old. It's time to move on to Persona 6. Fun fact, it has been longer now between the releases of Persona 5 and whatever comes next than the wait between Persona 4 and Persona 5. Heck, Persona 5 was announced in 2012 which was only 3 years after Persona 4 released, (2009) while meanwhile we have waited 8 years for even an ANNOUNCEMENT of Persona 6. Based on what I've seen Persona 6 isn't even in DEVELOPMENT over at Atlus. They seemed to be fully focused on ReFantasio right now and an unknown SMT title that will release in 2025 or 2026. It's unknown what that title will be but the possibilities include SMT6, Devil Survivor 3, or an SMT1 remake. Out of these an SMT1 remake is the most likely by far since SMT5 was still pretty recent. Soul Hackers 3 isn't happening anytime soon if at all due to the failure of SH2, so don't count on that one. Reviving one of their super dead sub-series like DemiKids or Majin Tensei or Last Bible is also extremely unlikely.
2024: Persona 3 Reload in February, ReFantasio in December
      2025: Unknown SMT project
2026: Remasters (most likely SMT4/4A or DDS, maybe both)
2027: Persona 6??? (10 year anniversary of P5 western release)
