Eric, funny that you have a similar problem that i dealt with last week. Had a Trashscape, about the same vintage, battery dies overnight, but not totally dead. Did the parasitic draw test with my test light, pulled every fuse and relay in the underhood fusebox, no dice. Went to the fusebox in the right side of the center console, found that by pulling fuse 19, the draw went away. That fuse is the power feed to the rear wiper motor, and the rear wiper in this one was not working, either. pulled the connector at the rear wiper motor, the draw was still there. This one happened to have the entire liftgate interior trim panel removed, so that made it easy to start going down the line. Disconnected the main connector for the liftgate, draw was still there. At that point, i looked up the wiring diagram, and figured out that the circuit feeding the rear wiper is shorted to ground somewhere between the interior fusebox and the liftgate. Talked to the customer, she didn't have time for me to crawl thru the wiring harness, so i just pulled that fuse and tossed it in the glovebox. Heard from the service writer the next day that she was happy that she no longer has to get it jump started every morning. Btw, new battery, too! My issue was with a "dealer installed" keyless entry system that I thought I had "fixed" by removing the module. When I found out the power door locks were the source of the draw it wasn't hard to find the culprit; a neat ball of relays and speaker wire wrapped in electrical tape behind the passenger kick panel with the bonus "No Solder No Crimp all Splice and Tape" wiring system. Some solder, heat shrink and cursing fixed it right, at least until I find the next easter egg.
Nothing like DIY wiring. Even wiring that's supposed to be to a national code can still be missed if the government inspector knows crap all about this electrical system.

MY 2011 FORD ESCAPE THE REAR WIPER JUST WENT OUT IT WAS FROZEN TO THE WINDOW I TURNED IT ON AND HEARD A POP AND NOW I HAVE THE SAME ISSUE BOUGHT A NEW BATTERY AND DEAD OVER NIGHT IM GLAD I FOUND THIS VIDEO GIVES ME A GOOD PLACE TO START
When you showed the high draw then drop, I was already concluding there must be a crappy gps to keep tabs on the spouse...😆
Easy peasy!! Terrible first repair by the other shop!! Great video, keep um’ commin’ Eric!!
You are “The Man”
Thanks for posting!
Working on a ‘11 Escape myself right now.
Twenty seconds of 5A draw, forty seconds off, rinse repeat. If left to itself, DOA battery.
No clicking detected. May end up pulling fuses until I locate the source.
"My windshield wipers doesn't work" "Here, we smashed your windshield for you..." You're welcome. That will be $250.
Gotta love how people think about their property. Even though it is a rust bucket, you'd think a safety item would be worth spending money to fix so you can see out the back window in the famous north east rust belt area. At least she got to eliminate the disconnect on the battery cable !
First to comment on an SMA video! That's better than the fix even though he diagnosed it before the diagnosis.
My uncle had similar problem with a merc, flat battery every morning after having it valeted, turned out to be switch to move seat forward or up had been knocked of and put on wrong so switch was engaged constantly.we didn’t solve it as efficient as you did here well done
Customer: "My car is using a lot more fuel than it used too".
Mechanic: " Well you need a long range fuel tank fitted, that'll fix your problem lady".
SMA looks at it: "You got a hole in your tank lady and the fuel is leaking out all over the floor, you need a new tank".
Customer: "That's what the other shop said".
Wha Wha Wha. Good work with the wiper Eric O.
People aren't usually interested in fixing the cause. If someone goes to doctor for high cholesterol, doctor gives him cholesterol lowering drugs (even though the cause is eating dietary cholesterol and saturated fat). Same for all lifestyle diseases like diabetes, high blood pressure, cancer etc.
@@Snooker-cn3dm How is that Dr. gonna buy his New BMW or that Yacht??? The truth is that some people can't be bothered with the "proper diagnosis" and they are taken advantage of. This is the way.
Funny thing is, her car was probably using more fuel from the computer always being reset.
@@mousegouse are they don't want to pay for proper diagnosis
My 2015 Ford Escape is doing the same thing, just not overnight. It happens more randomly. Your video definately helped me figure out what to do! Thanks!
Not even a minute into this and I'm on the floor laughing my a off!! OMG where do these type of people come from!!??
the Mediterranean
@@lesoram6236 He's Barney's Russian cousin who never made it big on the Flintstones.
Wife has a 2011 escape with the same problem. We u hooked up and the windshield washer sprayers didn't work. New rear motor washers worked again. Didnt think they were connected haha. Keep up the good videos 👍
In my travels so to say, alot of times its after market junk causing batt drains😉👍
This is Ford-approved factory junk.
@@markh.6687 Nothing last like they use to..
@@garycutshaw5246 Bad design to begin with, then made as cheaply as possible to the thinnest margins of quality and design. We can do better than this.
@@markh.6687 Today everything made cheap to increase sales. More they break the more they sale
I like ..."Fix it for real" ..Good Job Mr. O
You always surprise me, by how fast you find a way to zero in on the problem. The thermal image camera is a nifty tool, what you you think of it?
exactly... now i need that tool lol
Almost $700
@@TheBigChinoDon woa woa lets not go crazy here...I'll settle for one of those laser pointers that measure temp lol from Horrible Freight too lol
Clever diagnosis. I like the way you do things.
I gotta question: Did you see Stuntman unintentionally plow through the PLAKOS gate with a Pathfinder? Funny as all get out! 🤣
Of course lol. I love that guy! GET OVER HERE!!!
Easy peezy diag! Great work! Thanks for taking us along!
Probably kept the rear window, or atleast a portion of it snow/frost free.. until the battery ran dead I guess lol.
Thanks Eric, got an Escape in my yard that does the exact same thing. Might not be the wiper, but the investigation is the same. Wish you were closer, I'm up in the Thousand Islands.
"There's your problem lady!"
I heard a guy went into that same shop . He said " I have no brakes " . They told him " no problem , pick it up later " . He came back and they cut a large hole in the driver's side floor . He asked " WTF did you do to my car " ! They said - " did you ever watch The Flintstones " ? Perhaps their talents would best be directed to IKEA - " Assemblers Wanted , No Experience Necessary " ! Nice quick find . There are other videos on the wiper motor trying to park on Ford's and killing batteries .
You'd think the owner would see the rear window defrosted when the rest are still covered in snow..
Dead battery =no more heat?! 🤔
Or wouldn't the light be on the button
I like that negative side disconnect. I could use that style for my boat and tractor. I could have really used it on my daughters car when she was a teenager.
Send it to DiagnoseDan so he can show us the bonus footage where he dismantles it :)
You must have meant Ivan at Pine Hollow Auto who has lots of bonus footage. Probably not Diagnose Dan as he is located in Europe and doesn't work on American made cars.
Other shop puts in a disconnect, takes Eric all of 5 minutes to find the actual problem. Well done sir!
A wise man once said, "Its better to be lucky than be good. " - Mr. 0
but its good to get lucky!!!
True, but this one is both good and lucky.
Thanks Eric O.- chasing a weird 300ma ( 0.3 amp) parasitic draw on my Escape also- i'll check my rear wiper also..
I like the “One flew over the cuckoo’s nest” look at the beginning of the video. 🤣🤣
Or......... “Home Alone”. Burglar
ERIC, wow that is an annoying fix they did and thanks for honest repair u should to her.
8 thumbs down, I guess that's how many employee's the previous shop has. LOL
Another great repair !
I don't understand why most mechanics are totally against researching a vehicule problem on youtube ? If the previous shop had taken 5 minutes to research ford escape battery draw videos they would have probably stumbled on the common rear wiper motor repair. I just don't get it. I'm not saying to take the customers advice on repairs but doing your on research online can't hurt .
