    Amazing what you can get away with when you have no competition whatsoever.

      I REALLY hope they do because we DO need some competition already, badly. And not just on the CPU front; Nvidia has also been pulling some BS, too, since the 600 series. "Titan" shouldn't even exist.

      +Andrés Cifuentes There's worse : the GTX 1060 is rumored to be better than the RX 480, in the same price range. I see the future being bleak for AMD in the PC department.
      Wait for releases and benchmarks, I say.

      Which is funny because I have only ever had one of their CPUs and found it to be frustratingly slow. Now I'm running an FX 9590 CPU, just need to upgrade the liquid cooling I have now.

      I wish this were true, but it doesn't seem that cpu's lose value like you would expect. I bought a workstation with only one of it's two cpu sockets populated expecting to just wait a few years and fill the second socket "affordably". But here I am seeing the price hasn't changed one bit... Intel appears to be very good and knowing when to stop production so that the supply is always far enough below the demand to keep prices up on older models.

    • @looneyburgmusic
      @looneyburgmusic 8 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Probably... but also probably won't care, since at some point the constant increase in cores will outrun the *need* for an increase in cores... If it hasn't already. My current quad core does everything I need to do with no problems at all, so I would gain nothing from jumping to an 8 core or larger...

      Cores - Xeon or FX.
      Clock speed - Pretty much all AMD CPUs are clocked higher than their Intel counterparts.
      Overclocking - I'm not sure about Intel but a CPU in the FX lineup overclocked to 8.4.
      Oven - It doesn't matter about the CPU just use the stock cooler. Any stock cooler will heat up your room. Well, except the Wraith.

      Wel, this CPU is not made for watching videos on youtube, browse Facebook or play video games... But in the case of working with multithreaded programs, this CPU is for people who want to have a higher productivity, that might really well worth the price tag depending on their needs.

    • @Bourinos02
      @Bourinos02 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Well, time is money, and if you have to do your workload AS FAST AS POSSIBLE, well then, you might want to get a 7K$ Xeon, I mean, if nobody was buying them, Intel wouldn't even start to make them...
      That being said, I also don't understand exactly the "point" of this 6950X with consumer grade mobo...
      Maybe he's filling the gap between Xeons and top of the line consumer grade CPU? That would require to test Xeons to see where this chip stands and if the price tag is within that range.

    Upgrading from my i7-2600k to a 5820k (both at 4.6Ghz) I saw literally no performance boost for the vast majority of the titles I play. (Synthetic benchmarks obviously showed an increase)
    Until games are specifically developed for rigs with tons of cores/threads, it's a waste of money.

    • @nikoyochum6974

    • @nikoyochum6974
      @nikoyochum6974 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thomas Riddle depending on clock speed, you should. The 5820k has about a 15-20% IPC boost over the 2600k.

    • @4lc441
      @4lc441 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Niko Yochum Ok sure, but as long as the cpu wasn't a huge bottleneck before, most games will probably not benefit much from the slight improvement.

    • @OneRedKraken
      @OneRedKraken 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Niko Yochum As I said in my comment, both of them are at 4.6Ghz. I monitor my system with AIDA64 custom panel (imgur.com/K0GfhQh).
      Most games still tend to be very heavy on a single thread, with little use of the remaining threads.
      Take note that for games that are optimized for multiprocessing, I did see some improvement. What I was trying to say is that it's still not the case for the majority of games. Maybe DX12 will bring in a new era of multiprocessing and we'll finally to get more out of those sleeping cores, but until then it's pretty much a 'luxury' if the main purpose of your system is to game.

    Nobody cares about the 6950X at that price point unless you're getting it for free. Just go buy a 12 core Xeon you'll get ECC support as well.
    I hope Zen can beat the 6900k at least because it's supposed to be priced at $350 is so it means that the 6900k and 6950k will have to be price cut HEAVILY to compete. even if Intel only has to drop the 6950X to $1000 it's still a VAST improvement, and still that's insane but at least it's in line with basically every extreme CPU Intel has ever made.
    Like seriously even if I had $2000 just burning a hole in my pocket and no other real use for it I still wouldn't buy the 6950X.

      ***** That's not what I said I said the 6900k but if they drop the price of the 6900k there going to drop the price of the 6950X.
      I also said to it would drop to the $1000 price point the 6900k will probably drop to the $500 - $600 price point and the lower once will drop to launch prices of the 6700k so around the $350 mark.
      If it's true that the Zen 8 core 16 thread CPU is $350 and can beat the 5960X in multi threaded performance. And given that's what they told there investors it's likely true given that lying to you're investors can actually lead to law suits.

    • @schroederxleon

    • @Stars-Mine
      @Stars-Mine 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      No Zen wont compete because its two different markets. AMD does not want to really anyways, there is such a thing as a market being to small for multiple companies. The niche the 6950x is in, is exactly that sort of market.

    • @Etheoma
      @Etheoma 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Matthew Jackson There is no niche for the 6950X at $1700 well sorry people with too much money but other than that no.
      Because if you're a small business you should be using a 12 core xeon which performs almost just as well and is tested to a much higher standard for reliability. And has ECC support so that you're data wont get corrupted in memory.
      literally this CPU is for idiots with too much money.

      Honestly, I might buy a zen cpu next, even if intel's cpus might be better. AMD is a fraction of intel's size, in terms of employees, market share, etc. but AMD keeps the prices low; AMD is the only reason that the 6700k doesn't cost $1700 as well. If AMD goes away, Intel will be charging whatever the hell they want because they're the only CPUs that you can buy. I'd gladly give AMD my money, because intel is taking advantage of its customers. Bastards.

      AMD is the reason the 6950X costs $1700. Intel does have some forsight, and knows what a monopoly means to them. AMD is valuable to Intel, without them, Intel's profit gets siphoned by various governments through anti-trust laws. Intel is actively encouraging people to consider AMD if they're on a budget with this chip, thus avoiding a monopoly.

    This is actually an amazing product if you work with modern DAWs and audio plugins that run true multithread. Though the core speeds are slower, the amount of cores to break the load across really increases the power of the system and creates a more stable machine and DSP overall. This is why we use dual or triple Xeon CPUs at the studio since they can split load over all those cores even with the slower clock speeds and low to no overclocking potential.

    I think that plunking down a cool grand for the 5960X was totally worth it. Of course I'm talking about a machine used professionally for audio/video editing. I would have never spent that much on a gaming computer, let alone one built purely for bragging rights. So, the 6900K makes sense to me. But spending a further $700 for two extra cores...I don't know how wise it is, especially considering that it won't get you a dramatically better performance than the 6900K (+10% on average, maybe?) My 5960X is overclocked to 4.0 Ghz and it's EXTREMELY stable. And that was a conservative choice, since 4.2 Ghz was also very stable on my tests, but I just wanted some safety room, since my livelihood depends on this computer... So, by all means, get a 6900K for your content creation, crank it up to 4.2 Ghz (base clock is slightly higher, so 4.2 should be as stable as 4.0 is on a 5960X), add a 1080 GPU and you'll have a video editing monster that's really hard to beat, short of forking out $20,000 for a 36-core workstation (which will need custom software to be fully exploited, since neither Premiere nor Resolve can use that many cores...)

  • @pushatsinfrared

    Yeah, maybe, but the thing is, you can buy an FX-9590, the best 8 core AMD chip, is only £170-£200. You could build a whole high end PC with 16GB 1866 DDR3 ram,a decent 970 board and a GTX 980/ 980 Ti and a water cooler so you can overclock your 9590 to 4.6GHz+ for better single core than a 6900K by miles for the same price/cheaper than a 6950X.

  • @loganwalsh
    @loganwalsh 8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    But why. What usefulness does this provide? for cinebench renders you'd want to use Octane Render rather than pure CPU rendering anyway. Lightroom is a single threaded application so this won't help adobe bound folks. I guess if you're using a Sony alpha camera you can edit like mad in Phase One but I'm not sure which professional content creation applications would benefit from such a CPU. Perhaps after effects and premiere? What about davinci resolve and speed grade? You mentioned that this isn't for gaming and then never brought up applications that content creators would use. Strange.
    I'd like to know how this could improve the efficiency in a digital media perspective. Photoshop batch process times, color grading, mocha tracking, etc. How well does this help in programs like audition and Ableton live? Those are CPU bound applications which can be taking on mid range systems especially with a lot of effects added into a track. Just wondering. It doesn't seem like you guys are set up to test for a variety of real world uses for content creators... Which is a bit ironic. Canned benchmarks are fun but never really true to life in terms of real world performance. Yes, I know what I'm saying means this video would take 50x as long to produce but it's just some feedback.

      I would really love for this to happen, actually. Nobody benchmarks for audio apps like Ableton Live, which utilize multicore processing (but not threads). It's not easy to assess because I read something a while ago in Sound on Sound Magazine about how some of the enthusiast processors actually performed better than comparably priced Xeons. But that was two years ago. If a Linus channel did stuff like this, rather than say "It's not useful for gaming, so screw it," then it would be insanely useful content.

For example the 1270 v5 vs the 6700K OR the 1241 v3 vs the 4770. In both match ups the Xeon is cheaper with a lower TDP and I would love to see how much of a performance/fps difference a lower TDP can make in essentially the same processors.

    There are a lot of engineers who need to have both single core performance (CAD design where the kernal makes sequential computations) and multi-thread performance (FEA or Toplogy/Topgoraphy Optimized Design). Additionally, it seems like ECC memory isn't as hard of a requirement these days, so some specialist manufacturers are actually recommending using i7's instead of xeon's for business use. This made more sense a few months ago when there was still a v3/v4 architecture gap between the two product lines, but at least this might give you some insight as to who is actually buying these things.

      So when listing the AMD APUs and Intel Core series, it goes: Core 2, i3, A4, i5, A6, i7, A8, i9, and A10

      ://ReaperReaper lol ,what? not even comparable.... In the AMD APU range, the number represents the CPU cores + GPU shading cores

    I managed to get my i7 6800k stable at 4.4GHz 1.35v, cooled by a Hyper 212 EVO. Never went above 50c while gaming or benchmarking. Im using a custom loop now because I saved up money for one though. Not sure if it's just a silicon lottery jackpot, but it's an absolute monster of a chip for the $330 I paid at the local Microcentre

      Update: X99 chips have gotten much cheaper, have a 6950x coming in tomorrow, paid $290 with shipping! The 6800k has been dead stable the last 3 years, ran it at 4.2GHz 1.23v for daily use, only cranked it to 4.4GHz 1.35v for Benchmarking. She's still doing remarkably well though, I'm planning to try to snag a cheap X99 board now to build a computer with the 6800k for my roommate. Hopefully X99 motherboards start getting cheaper soon though, they're still holding value somehow. Nevertheless, still very happy with X99, and I can't wait to see how the 6950x does in my system!

    Turbo Boost 3.0 actually helps A LOT with single-core processes. Anyone with a bit of patience using per-core overclock can also make this CPU be fantastic for single & multiple core processes alike. It really is the best out there, but it just doesn't justify the price.

    i5-8500 is a 6-core, if you undervolt it by 140mV in a SFF box, watts at wall is only about 65w under full BOINC load. like.. 40 percent of a 6950x. can u undervolt a 6950x? effiiency mode of AMD 5950x and 7950x is sick efficiency.
