    Wow. Intel really hit the nail on the head with Sandy Bridge. I did not think it would be that close to the 8700k in gaming.

      It's less that they hit the nail on the head, and more that they haven't needed to do much in the way of performance improvements since.

      Abdou Saadi Not really, it's proof that games are way more GPU dependent than CPU dependent.... which we already knew.

      SandyBridge was the last big jump, before adding more cores now.
      But a lot changed since then. You can overclock an i7 2600K to 4.5 GHz, you now get that without overclocking. Here the SandyBridge will easy eat 70W extra.
      But the real changes come when you use features like AVX2 or arbitrary integer precision operations then you will see huge leaps in performance. And DDR4 and other new technologies.

    • @blaser80
      @blaser80 7 ปีที่แล้ว +23

      This is why averages are misleading, if you look at the frame-time analysis you'll see the sandy bridges frame time variance is significantly poorer, techreport demonstrate this in some of their articles. Having said that Sandy bridge was well a head of it's time, and before Intel started using toothpaste for TIM 0_o.

      The graphics card I have takes up 3 slots so unfortunately it won't fit in the original design. However I could easily go with a low profile cooler and put the card above the motherboard with a riser so I'll see how that works out.

    • @Djhg2000
      @Djhg2000 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Psyk0l0ge I'd say your choice should be either 2600k or a Ryzen 5, but I'm a bit biased. I have both a 2600 and a Ryzen 1400 but I don't do a lot of video editing, but the Ryzen system definitely feels more responsive of the two. Also remember that Sandy Bridge is at the end of its life span while Ryzen is still very fresh, if you need something in the future the latter will be easier to source parts for.
      Beware of Windows 10 updates though, I had to let my old 2016 version run through a few loops of updates and restarts before it became stable. Other users have reported the same thing happening but if you download the latest installer from Microsoft you should be good to go no matter which one you end up going for.
      I could run a few transcoding benchmarks for you if you want, just let me know if you do.

    • @nimkal

    • @TheDarkToes

      The added mhz to ram does help.. the key their is cl9. Timings and frequency matter.
      Typically 2133 has longer timings than 1866, but at the same timings 2133 will give you some boost.

    Yeah, the 2600K is still perfectly fine for productivity and gaming. Can you imagine in 1998 using a CPU from 1991? You couldn't even install Windows. Moore's Law has slowed down a lot in CPUs. And local computing requirements for most things have gone way down. You could still get by with a Core 2 Quad easily.

      Because AMD screwed up in 2011 with Bulldozer, so Intel was sitting on it's ass and doing almost nothing. Other thing is, in 2023 we won't see that much jump either, because these CPU architectures are pretty close to reach their IPC limits and it's getting more and more difficult to squeeze the performance out of this architectures these days.

      No, new CPU's are much faster, it's just the games. Modern engines are optimized for 4+ threads, the consoles using low performance CPU too, so you don't really need a strong CPU for gaming nowadays. The new CPU is much faster in other softwares as you can see, it's just the games having minimal difference.

      @LrdZanny 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hyperthreading still does not improve game performance, all you would have gotten out of a 2600k is 2MB more L3 cache. Not nothing, but also way too little gain for the $100 more the i7s cost.
      The reality is that games want a few fast single cores, and it does not take much to bottleneck the GPU even with 6 year old hardware. AMD just didn't have fast single threaded performance until this year which made it look like CPU performance mattered a lot more when they kept losing in benchmarks by a landslide because their IPC was shit.

    • @davidelombardo3588
      @davidelombardo3588 7 ปีที่แล้ว +19

      You guys have to stop with this "cores don't matter" mentality! I recently upgraded to a 1080 ti and my 4690k isn't able to keep up in almost every game even when overclocked to 4.5 GHz. I get lower fps than i should, judging by these and every other benchmark. The only place where i get similar (if not identhical) score is in benchmarks. The i5 8600k is a bad buy, since like every i5 it will be good only for a couple years. It's much better to spend 100$ more and get a 8700k. I guess it doesn't matter though, since you can't actually buy any of those. Just wait for ryzen refresh

    • @Pongomuffin
      @Pongomuffin 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Hyperthreading does help gaming performance in that it helps to maintain stable high fps. I changed an i5 2500 to an i7 2600 and got a smoother gameplay overall. So more cores/threads helps to avoid the low fps dips.

    • @AVerySillySausage
      @AVerySillySausage 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      +Lord Zanney Have you been in a fridge since 2011? Games absolutely use HT lmao, when you're not GPU bottlenecked Intel basically shows a straight 25-30% performance boost in basically every modern game. Furthermore a lot of games even make use of 12T, again provided you're not GPU bottlenecked a 8700k can destroy the 7700k at equal clock speeds, the only problem is the 7700k is already so fast in games that it's really hard to remove that GPU bottleneck, but that potential performance is lurking.

      zBruda if it's only for gaming, it might not be worth it seeing as the 2600k is still sufficient, but if you do any kind of editing/rendering/demanding multitasking, or if Zen2 blows the industry out of the water, then an upgrade could be useful. Personally I can't see a reason to upgrade 2600K+ gaming battlestations at this time, assuming 1080p-1440p/60-120hz. I'd recommend putting the cash to good use on a high end video card.

    i7-2600 *K*
    It was all about overclocking, the more expensive K-processors were bought to be used with OC...
    So the stock clocks tests were not even needed.
    In the OC tests - they are equal for games, processor from Q1-2011 still as good 7 years later :) That may be shocking, considering how fast things were changing before that.
    Rendering tests - obvious, if someone is doing it professionally, needs more cores anyway.
    Also idk why would you set 2400MHz memory to operate at 1333MHz speed, just select the option in BIOS and it's fine at 2400...
    One more interesting test would be single core performance at same clock (maybe 4.5 GHz) for both processors.
    But overall nice video, probably intel wasn't happy with showing the similar gaming performance :)

    Another proof that Intel has not really innovated in a long and Coffee Lake is still not innovative. Skylake=Kaby lake (higher clocks)=Coffee Lake (2 extra cores). Essentially Coffee Lake is what Skylake should have been 2 years ago. But you know...cashing out on virtually non-existent improvements every year is...well...INTEL! Thank you AMD for bringing back competition!

THANK YOU, THANK YOU SO MUCH! I can't believe Sandy bridge has held up so well for all of this time... since i built my pc i started with a gtx560, then a hd7970, then upgraded to a gtx780oc edition and now when i finally think its time to bite the bullet and overhaul it from scratch you just prove that its still a freaking awesome machine, Hell i might wait for the eventual release of the next generation of Nvidia cards and see if my gaming rig will last a full decade.

A friend of mine is still on Sandy Bridge but has an i5 2500 non k with 16GB RAM. I keep telling him to just put a GTX 1060 in his rig and he'll be set for at least a couple more years, but he won't do it and is sticking with his GTX 560. Definitely going to point him to this video, it's great to see people out there not just lauding the latest and greatest. Subbed ...

      learn2 farm that's simply not correct. If you use a low end GPU your not going to see a CPU bottleneck because the demand on the CPU is much less. A 1080 TI require substantial amount of CPU power at high refresh rates.... especially if the game has poor CPU core scaling.

      Would you use a 800$ halo GPU product with your 6 Y.O proc ? Of course a 1080 Ti will show a bigger difference. But here we look at regular people with regular systems (1060-1070) and if yes or no it's worth it to upgrade the proc if you have a good midrange GPU.
      Your statement is 100% correct in a vacuum, it stops making sense as soon as you consider use cases.

      It actually lasted for a really long period, maybe without overclock it would got to 10 years, who knows, but 8 years is a impressive amount of time, I mean, since I'm Always on the mid tier processor, like the most basic i5's, I had to upgrade my processor what, 3 times on the last 8 years, I ended spending more Money than you... To reach somewhat your i7 2600k performance only now, intel second generation really is a jewel, the improvments from first to second gen makes me wonder why after 3rd gen intel got so lazy...

    I have a bunch of PC's, including ones built with i7-2600K, i7-4790, & i7-4790K processors. I'm still running the GTX-780ti SC on these and I figured after all these years that it should be time to upgrade to get better gaming performance. I just last week spent a week researching all the options and I decided there is not much reason to upgrade. This is pretty amazing IMO. The last PC I bought that I did not build myself was a brand new IBM PS/2 Model 80 with ALL the trimmings. I worked for an IBM dealer and even with a 20% discount that PC with Math coprocessor, 4MB RAM, 8514/A graphics card and Monitor cost me a cool $12K and change. I pretty much replaced all my PCs with new builds every 3 years since and got a good doubling of performance each time. As you said in this video the i7-2600K is 6-years old and they still haven't improved much for gaming. I check again next year and see what the GTX-1180ti and new intel CPU's bring. Their going to have to crack 6GHZ to have a chance at selling me on a new CPU/MB/RAM.

      Lemme guess, low speed ram? Ryzen really benefits from high speed memory... Also depends on the game. Some games aren't really optimized for Ryzen yet... Depends on resolution too, on 1080p it makes more difference, but who cares if you're getting for example 300 vs 250 FPS in CS, it's still way over your refresh rate. Also, you're buying a dead platform, Am4 will be used at least up to 2020, so you could buy a mobo now and upgrade when Ryzen +/2/3 comes. Ryzen if simply a better choice for future proofing and if you want to use anything else besides gaming, even in multitasking, and the higher core count will help in future games that are optimized for more cores. Oh and I'm not fanboying, I'm typing this from an Intel machine...

    • @Peizxcv

      Scream Aim Fire No, got RAM to 2933 and still slower than my 3770K @ 4.627GHz w/1600 RAM.
      More over, current Ryzen would be outdated sooner than an Intel system as that 200/300 FPS would soon be 20 and 30 and the difference between upgrading now or a year or two later.
      Take my word, I have been using AMD from 1998 to 2006 as main PC and have my sister on AMD until 2016. I wouldn’t have bought a 1600 if I don’t like AMD. It is just a lot of the time AMD’s marketing and reality don’t match. For people on overclocked Sandy, Ivy Bridge and Haswell, it is better to wait and see what Ryzen 2/3 and Intel’s 10nm offering will be.

      Peizxcv Hmmm... Yeah you made me think, I've been looking to build a new pc, and wanted to go with i7 and 1070, then Ryzen and Vega, and seeing Vega is a flop, thinking about Ryzen/Intel and Volta. No idea about the current market though, I used to check forums and reddit pages everyday, and now I'm clueless. What's holding me away from intel is purposely making new mobos needed each gen, and that single threaded performance might matter less and less on future. My comment might have seemed a bit aggresive, as I'm angered by all the fanboys, both Intel and Amd, they're driving me crazy as it's so hard to really understand what is good and what's not.

    Good video. I've been a 2600K user since 2011... I use Adobe AE to create motion graphics and this video has convinced me that it is finally time to start looking at an upgrade.
    I've had the money to spare all this time but as far as I was aware the 2600K was still around 90% as powerful as anything and for that reason, the effort to find new parts, sell old parts didn't seem worth it. This video however, demonstrates almost TWICE as fast rendering... I just didn't know that was the case.
    Plus, I am stuck with DDR3 1333MHz RAM, 16GB - that is a pitiful amount for Adobe AE so I'll be jumping to either 64GB - 128GB RAM.
    My previous machine was based on the Q6600! and I remember almost crying with joy when I saw the 2600K After Effects performance improvements - so, it looks like I'm in for that again!

      There is no difference from 1333mhz to 2400mhz on gaming. Max 1-2 fps difference maybe. Latency is important thing though. An 1333mhz with low latency can perform better than a 2400mhz with high latency and timing. Thats why low cl and timing 2400 rams are higher priced than 3200.
      I saw 0 difference my self from 2400 to 3200 on ryzen 1500x and gtx 1080 on GTA5 BF1 and Watch dogs 2 which i tested. Maybe 1-2 fps on gta 5 in some parts but am not sure cause test never shows the same result on every run. So no worth the spend. Unless you want to do editing etc which stress the system more.

      Sure but a Common 2600k-user who is still rocking this chip until today is upgrading to a GTX 1060, 1070 or even a 1080. A 1080ti is not a common Upgrade from this CPU.

    i had a 2600k with an r9 390, and it was a great little computer. i started having issues with the mob about a year and a half ago, but i just didn't have the money to get a new mother board, it still worked. but a bit less on par. so 5 months ago i decided it was time to get a new pc.
    i bought a i7 8700k.
    msi z370 gaming pro carbon mobo.
    msi rx 580 8 gb armor oc gpu.
    2x8 gb memory hyperfury x.
    evo 850 500 gb ssd.
    2 m.2 960 500 gb sticks.
    800 watt lepa psu rate 80 bronze plus.
    and i must say, it was totally worth it. if the mobo didn't have an issue i wouldn't have upgraded. i was playing world of warcraft in eyefinity mode, on 3 60 inch tvs at 5760x1080 stable 70 fps. it was seriously amazing, and the chip in today's standard is a really good point if you don't have the money for the coffee lake series.

    Had a 2600k since 2011 in my Dell XPS until I just built a new gaming rig with the 8700k. Couldn’t be happier. But that Dell gave me some solid computer times.

    Really? 1070? You are testing CPUs yet you creat a bottleneck by using a weaker gpu

      Yep, totally stupid test. Re-test with a 1080ti HardwareCanucks!

      players who bought gtx 1080ti are 2% and how many of them have i7 2600k ? is someone like that? This test makes sense. This is not stupid test with 1080ti

      @nit001 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      All this test proves is that a gtx-1070 is the bottleneck when used with both cpu's. It's misinformation making people think the 2600K can compete with the 8700k in gaming.
      Without including a GTX-1080ti test there is no context. Soooo it's a stupid test.
      (To counter your argument: Who in their right mind is going to buy a 8700K and put a gtx-1070 in it?)

      learn2 farm: Ok you have a point, the productivity tests seem fine.
      So only the gaming tests are stupid.
      May I remind you this video is called: "Intel i7-8700K vs i7-2600K - FINALLY Time to Upgrade Sandy Bridge?" not "2 cpu's bottle-necked by a mid range GPU" like the gtx1070!

      nit001 If someone has the funds for a 1080ti, there's no way they'd still be rocking a 2600k

    The 6700K finally lured me into an upgrade from my much loved 2600K. No question that the 8700K is yet another step up but I have been enjoying my new system for over a year now and cost to upgrade today is significantly higher. The Samsung NVMe drive costs more, and GPU/RAM prices are MUCH higher. I think I made my purchase at the perfect time, I'll give it a couple of generations and upgrade again.

    1. Great comparison!
    2. Definitely surprised by the results! I didn't foresee the gaming aspect to be so close!
    3. Like you said, if you're a gamer exclusively, no need to change platforms per-say. I have an i5-3570K in a z77 motherboard laying around. I'm gonna build a gaming rig for a buddy! He'll be happy to hear about your results when I talk to him!!
    4. Good video for the encoder that maybe hasn't been in the video/photo editing realm since 2011 or so, thumbs up!
