    I had a DMG with vertical lines down the left side and I tried this and no matter how hard I pushed or how long I left he iron there it didn't change whatsoever. While heating the ribbon more lines appeared in the center and right side of screen and running over in that area quickly fixed it but again the ones to the left side would never budge. I could wiggle or bend the ribbon and it didn't change it at all either. Very disappointing I couldn't fix it but it just didn't seem to be the usual issue. Ever ran into that?

    • @JPValheim
      @JPValheim  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, I've had that problem with a few gameboys. I'm always much more alarmed when I see a gameboy with just 1 or 2 vertical lines vs tons of vertical lines. A gameboy with 1 or 2 usually has the problem you are talking about, or somebody has tried to fix it already.
      Funny how more lines is actually a good thing repairability wise!
      that being said, sometimes not all the vertical lines go away even when theres a bunch.

    • @JackPitmanNica
      @JackPitmanNica ปีที่แล้ว

      The black square shows up when a gameboy turns on without a game inside it. If you put a game in the black square will be a Nintendo icon. If the black square is showing up when you put a game inside, it means that your gameboy cannot detect the game. Try cleaning the game cart and see what happens

    What's your experience with screens glitching out completely? The boot screen looks like it's nothing but random symbols and letters, I can hear the game, and I can interact with the game. It's just that everything is a glitched mess and I can't see anything.

    • @JackPitmanNica
      @JackPitmanNica 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There are two main circuitboards in each gameboy - the circuitboard holding the screen and the circuitboard holding the batteries/game. The best way to test this is to get another gameboy and switch the circuitboard. This will show you which part of the gameboy is messing up. If you switch the boards and you still see glitches then you know your problem is with your LCD. If you switch the boards and don't see glitches then you know the problem is with your other half.

    • @JPValheim

      The strip places some pressure on the ribbon cable so that it doesn't move around too much and get damaged (I think). You can remove the strip and the unit will work; but theoretically it would be more prone to damage

    I am having an issue with my speaker. every thing else works, including the headphone jack. It looks as if I get continuity from the board to where the wires connect to the speaker, but have resistance when measuring across the speaker. • @JPValheim

      Thats a really common problem, usually replacing the speaker fixes it. In rare cases sound distortion can be caused by the back half of the gameboy, the part where the game gets plugged in. However its probably just your speaker

      It sounds like you need to replace either the backboard or the front LCD. I don't know of a simple way to fix that problem unfortunately. Youll probably need to switch the parts with a working gameboy to figure out which part is defective

    Hey this is awesome! I have two DMG-01s from my childhood that worked perfectly every year then died this year. They simply do not power on in any way. • @JPValheim
      @JPValheim  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      You would need to test it with an AC power supply. If the gameboy works with AC, then the problem is something to do with the batteries / battery connection. If the gameboy does not work with AC, then the problem as something to do with the back circuit board. Gameboys basically have 3 parts; a front circuit board (the screen, highest value part of the gameboy), a back circuitboard (medium value), and a shell. (lowest value)

    My game boy turns on and shows an image, but when I insert a cartridge, it doesn't read it, as if the cartridge or the cartridge slot were dirty, but they aren't. The logo that appears on the screen appears to be corrupted. Could this also be caused by a burned out or damaged processor?

    • @JPValheim
      @JPValheim  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Unfortunately I do not know why the problems happen :( I just know that if you swap out parts then it fixes certain problems. It sounds like the back circuitboard with the game slot needs to be replaced. That part is pretty easy to get, you could probably buy a "broken" gameboy and use it. Look for a gameboy that has a visual defect on the screen, you'll be able to find a working part that way for cheaper

    • @JackPitmanNica
      @JackPitmanNica 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There should always be a red light, a beep, and a black box on the screen when no game is inserted.
      If you look at this video, you will see there are two circuitboards in each gameboy. Your problem is with the back circuitboard. This is actually a good thing because the front circuitboard is the valuable circuitboard. I recommend that you try buying a gameboy that has a broken screen. These are usually like $15 - $20. That should give you the parts you need to fix your gameboy. Unfortunately you could fix it to just find that your screen is also broken! You could have one failed component or multiple. No way to know until you test it out

      @JackPitmanNica 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You said your gameboy has a red light but there is no sound and no image. That means the problem is most likely 1 of these two

    • @JackPitmanNica

      Your best bet is to purchase a second gameboy from eBay and swap parts out to identify where the problem is. Gameboys basically have 2 main circuitboards - a front circuitboard with the lcd and a back circuitboard where the games and batteries go. The problem you are talking about could be causes by both parts so it sounds like you'll need to purchase a second gameboy (maybe a cheaper one with physical damage to the shell).

      @JPValheim  ปีที่แล้ว

      If you are lucky, the speaker is broken or a wire fell loose and you can either replace the speaker (cheap) or resolder the wire. If that doesn't work, If I remember right that means you need to replace the back circuitboard of the DMG (the one that games plug into). Luckily the back circuitboard is the cheaper part to replace because DMG with damages screens often have a viable back circuitboard

    Hey there - so turned on my game boy DMG 01 after years of in activity - worked well - until suddenly - new batteries in, no power at all - there is some corrosion in the battery contacts - what can it be?

    • @JPValheim
      @JPValheim  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Max Portelli sometimes the corrosion causes the contacts to become rough. You can easily clean all of the corrosion using white vinegar and some Q-Tips. You'll see the corodded parts bubble. Make sure you dry it properly after cleaning.
      A good test is to put 4 batteries in
      The Gameboy, turn the switch on, and then roll your fingers on the batteries so the batteries spin. While the batteries spin and change position with the contacts, you might notice the power flicker on and off. If the power is flickering that means you can fix it by cleaning the contacts and sanding them. If the power doesn't flicker when you roll the batteries, then you may have a problem with the Circuitry in the Gameboy and probably have to replace a part of it

    What is the Temperature you put the solder to so you don’t burn it?

    • @JPValheim
      @JPValheim  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jajajaja to be honest I always used a cheap soldering iron that didn't have a temperature gauge... Its not really the temperature of the soldering iron that you need to worry about, its how long you touch the device with your soldering iron. If you have a cooler iron, then you can touch the device longer with it, but if you have a hot iron, you have to be careful. As the connections heat up you'll see some damage start to occur around the green part of the circuit board (the coating will start to change color and flake) if you let it get too hot. But this is usually not a problem

  • @miguelbaia2386
    @miguelbaia2386 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    • @JPValheim
      @JPValheim  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Theres two main circuitboards in a DMG - you can think of it as the front half and the back half. The front half has the screen and the buttons while the back half has the slot for the game and the batteries.
      I recommend you buy another DMG off ebay for like $30 and then switch out the components and figure out which one needed to be replaced that way.
      If your LCD isn't turning on then you've got serious problems in your gameboy that you can't easily fix. Your better off replacing the parts with parts from another gameboy and seeing what you can do there.

      Sounds like a bad LCD. Basically buy a new gameboy cause that part is the same as buying a working gameboy :(
      You can troubleshoot it a bit though... Youd need to find a second gameboy; then take them apart halfway. Swap out the pieces and see what works and what doesn't work. That way allows you to know for sure whats wrong.
      Here are some questions that might help you
      Does the gameboy make beep noise when it turns on?

    • @JPValheim
      @JPValheim  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      The blue tint goes away as soon as the area reaches normal temperature. Its only blue like that when it is heated. Its pretty hard to overdo, to be honest. Its much easier to accidentally melt plastic somewhere with the tip of the soldering iron going into the wrong place than it is to overheat that area and damage it that way.

      Unfortunately those cannot be fixed, I call them "LCD Worms"
      You could buy a gameboy and replace the LCD itself but the LCD component is 50% of the circuitry jajaja so you might as well just use a new gameboy in that case

      Sounds super fun :)
      The battery terminals clean SUPER easy with vinegar, just for reference. Regular houshold white vinegar works really well because it reacts with the corrossion and it bubbles away
