How was Luigi's Mansion created?

  • A brief history of the development of Nintendo's game Luigi's Mansion and it's sequel, Dark Moon.
    ----------------
    Follow me for updates! / thomasgdocs .
    Hi there! As Halloween is almost here, I thought today we could take a look at one of Nintendo's spookiest series, Luigi's Mansion.
    By the way, I’ve never made any videos like this before, so feel free to throw feedback at me. I am ready!
    Oh also, here's a fun anecdote about this video - for the research, I needed one specific interview from the Official Nintendo Player's Guide, but I couldn't find it anywhere online. I eventually messaged all the group chats I'm a part of, but not even they could find it. Eventually a good Samaritan on Reddit sent me photos of their copy. The whole thing was a bit of a palaver though!

    To anyone watching this video, I'm sorry about the sound effects! I've toned them down a lot in my future videos!
    I'm still learning how to make videos like these, so I'm definitely gonna slip up from time to time. Hopefully you'll stick it out with me!

      I was going to offer a respectful critique about just that, but I'm glad to see you've addressed it.
      I've recently subbed, and I enjoy these type of videos as audio only in the car (I have to drive a lot for work) so I had nooo idea what was with all the sound effects until I pulled over and saw the card changes.

      Hi ! And thanks for your great work. I'm currently watching all your videos and that is pure pleasure!!
      Just on this (old) episode, trumpet in the background was melting with your voice frequencies and made this episode harder to follow (for the French I am at least). I mean that jazzy music was a disturbing mix :)
      Apart from that on that specific old episode... I love your work. Thanks. It has a little taste of the 'Iwata asks' we so miss !

    If you ignore the low resolution, Luigi's Mansion is honestly gorgeous. The lighting of the rooms is really good and atmospheric, and exploring the rooms with the gameboy horror is great. It's amazing how good GameCube games actually look aside from the low resolution, even characters having thousands of faces on their models.

    Really interesting and well presented video. Only real complaints are that some sound effects were really annoying and the lack of any gameplay or development screenshots. The two sound effects in particular that kept annoying me were the "whoosh" and the "fart" noises. I'd really recommend toning them down or removing them completely in future videos as at some points in the video I was thinking more about the sound effects than the content itself. I feel gameplay videos or screenshots are really important in these types of videos. It felt kind of bland without it. Once again, great video though!

    • @Fogokhost
      @Fogokhost 5 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      I was going to comment exactly this. I also found the sound effects annoying due to their excessive use... I really liked the video, though! Very informative :)

      Ah ok, I'll turn down the sfx in future videos. Thanks for the feedback!
      Also, I'll try to include more development screenshots/gameplay. The difficulty with that is I'm getting most of the information from interviews, and there's not always screenshots of what the devs are talking about. Nevertheless, I'll try to incorporate more in future videos if I can find them. Thanks!

    It's great that Luigi's Mansion eventually got the appreciation it deserves, much like the GameCube itself. :) Also, it's nice having an explanation as to the design choices for Dark Moon which while the style wasn't loved by everyone, I really did enjoy it.
    Also, Luigi's Mansion craze? There's a Luigi's Mansion Arcade edition too. :)

    the music in the original also slows down the lower your health is which i find very subtly pleasing but at the same time it made me think i messed up the music. however i did mess up, but in a different way to get my health so low that the change in tempo was that noticeable so i suppose it still makes sense.

    the mall near my house has an arcade called Round 1. and in that arcade, there's a Luigi's Mansion arcade game. It's really fun, and worth your money. You get to hold a poultergust gun styled controller, and it has 2 controllers so 2 people can play. (with not Peach, Daisy, or any other real character. It's Blue Luigi. Why.) It's better than messing with an analog stick, since you get to point your controller at the screen like a Wiimote. It's worth your cash. It's better than the Mario Kart arcade games also featured, in my opinion.

    Even if it isn't, I still find it pretty incredible: the editing and music (save perhaps the *whoosh*ing) feels super polished and coordinated and the video in general has such a cool style. Moreover, it's very informative and interesting to listen to: I love hearing about what lead to the creation of my favorite games and you have such a calming voice.
    So yeah; you've definitely found a new subscriber. The next few hours will likely be used towards marathoning the rest of your stuff ^_^

    I love all 3 Luigi's Mansion games. (Unfortunately I haven't been able to play the Luigi's Mansion 3DS port but oh well.) I much prefer the dual stick control methods but that's not to say that Dark Moon/2 had worse controls, and in some respects I prefer it. Not the amount of options for affecting the game but how they affect the game. I've recently been playing a lot of Dark Moon online because I find it quite fun as I've already beat the main game. The controls defiantly feel a lot more snappy than the original and by far the best thing about Dark Moon/2 is the run button oh my goodness the run button is the best edition to the series why did they remove it in 3?

    Hi, Thomas! I loved your video, but would like to offer some criticism to help you get better videos done!
    First and most important, lower your sfx. They're so loud they outlevel your own voice. Remember that in minidocs your voice is to be above everything else, in a great quality.
    BGM and SFX should be waaaay lower, specially when the effects are so frequent. Consider lowering both their volume and frequency, so they don't annoy your viewer. So many "wooshs" are not very pleasant, and the stapler sounds are too loud.
    Try listening to your video, rather than watching it before finishing it. Deprived of the visual stimulum you might perceive better the audio and make adjustments =)
    Have a great time making content!

      Woahhh, that's a lot of feedback! Thank you so much!
      So I've definitely learned quite a bit after making the two videos after this one, and I've toned down the sound effects considerably. I agree that they were really over the top in this one, and hopefully I've learned my lesson ;)
      That's a really great tip, by the way, about just listening to the audio. Thanks for that, and thanks for all the really valuable feedback!

The good times playing Mario kart 7, Super MARIO bros 2, super Mario 3D land, and most important Luigi’s Mansion Dark Moon. Beat the game twice because my little sister deleted my save where I completed the hole game which made me sad that I had to start all the way back, but beating the game faster and having fun playing the story mode again.

      I agree that they're WAY too prominent and repetitive in this video - I'm making sure to turn down the sfx a bit plus using a greater variety in the next videos I'm working on. I definitely think there should be *some* sound effects though - I think the video would seem like it was lacking something without them. I guess I'll see what the feedback's like on the next video and go from there. I'm glad that you enjoyed the video other than that though!

    • @tyker77
      @tyker77 5 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      @@ThomasGameDocs I think there definitely could be sound, but for example GMTK does fine with just voice and background music, and very very occasional sound effects. I think you can do fine with that too. As right now, the amount of sound effects, and especially the wooshes, make the video hard to listen to.

    • @ThomasGameDocs
      @ThomasGameDocs  5 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      @@tyker77 I definitely toned down the sfx in the videos I made after this (the Layton one, in particular, is the closest to my vision for these videos), but I do take your point. However, GMTK videos have a completely different visual style to mine - I'm going for a lot more of a skeuomorphic, paper cut-out styled look, similar to Lindsay Ellis' series It's Lit (th-cam.com/video/Mn3aKZ8ZVFo/w-d-xo.html). I think in these first 3 videos I didn't really reach the level of papery-ness that I wanted, which makes the sfx stand out a lot (plus they were far too loud and annoying). The video I'm currently working on about Super Mario Kart has a much stronger paper look and I think the sound effects really fit into it. I'm definitely listening to the feedback though, and if people find the sfx annoying in my other videos then I'll definitely considering taking them out / seriously reducing them. For now though, most/all of the criticism about the sfx has been on this video, where imo they were executed pretty poorly.
      Anyway, that turned into a bit of an essay! Can you tell I've thought too much about this, haha? Basically, I'm listening to feedback and will get rid of them if people keep hating them.

    Frankly I loved the first game. It stuck to the creepy factor instead of making it more funny or silly. It only gave you any relief when you cleared a room in the mansion unlike Dark Moon which had occasional comedic relief. There was so much more creepy atmosphere to the original than the more recent games. Younger me was scared to play the game for a while because of the constant hallway jump scares and really really dark rooms. As I got older I came to appreciate it much more. Not to say the series took a dive into garbage; I think the series is great and really builds up on my childhood and I’m happy new games are coming out; but I find the original game the best in the series.

    Wow. The story behind of my most hated games of all time makes this game worth a shot past the baby for a fifth try I think, and it makes me want to try out the second and the third one just because it is, like here said, different, and I did not know that until now.
