They need to bring back Evinrude with a 105 or 110 degree prop shaft !! That will allow more stern lift without wedges or a canted transom, and as the motor is trimmed out the prop moves back through the arc to give the effect of set-back. Go with a inline six four stroke and it will have a natural balance and smoothness. hang a blower on the side and go like stink. Thanks Andy for all you do. Jim
Thank God they didn't call it an evinrude. I cannot believe this is what they decided to put their money on instead of the g2. They should have just taken all the marketing money and development from this and put it into good parts on the G2 along with refining it. They could have taken a 2 year break and got the G2 right maybe even consult mercury for some help. So disappointed.
Actually I think the last year of the G2 was pretty much figured out, it even had some performance upgrades that nobody knew about, or was even talked about. Such a great motor that never had a chance to prove itself. Very disappointed to see it go. This new Rotax is the 3 cylinder G2 which was a fantastic small motor but adding the extra 90 degree turn will likely pull to much power from it. I’m looking forward to the 6 cylinder version of this. I think this new design will be fantastic on pontoon boats, but can’t see the benefits over a G2 on a fishing boat yet👍🏻

30 year marine tech business owner and Evinrude devotee since childhood. Down here in Florida outboards are king due to shallow water and rocks. I've been anxiously awaiting the reveal of the much lauded not so secret Evinrude Ghost outboard release. MAN, AM I DISSAPOINTED. WHAT AN ABORTION.
This is the future of engines for deck boats. I have a Hurricane with a Yamaha 200, would love the stern space where the engine cowling is. Sounds like he is coming at it from a fishing boat perspective. If it makes it to gen 3 it should be solid.
I was a diehard Evinrude fan for 30yrs. I loved them because Ole Evinrude was the original engine builder for Harley Davidson in 1903. He left H-D after a couple years to build Outboard boat motors. I was so excited when BRP bought the Evinrude name because I knew they have the money and engineering to build and design a great outboard, but just dropped the Evinrude name. I switched to Yamaha. I love my new Yamaha F70. But I was excited to hear BRP was bringing back a outboard. I naturally figured they would name it Evinrude because they own a 100 plus year old name that everyone knows. This Rotax is a bad idea. Plus Rotax dropped the 582 Aircraft engine $8,000 dollars, they dropped all 2 stroke aircraft engines. That killed the light sport aircraft engine market. They had the market cornered. Now you have to buy their 912 4 stroke that’s over $20k today. So the days of building a cheap light sport aircraft are gone. And nothing took off like a 582 2 stroke. They was great for short takeoffs in the back country.
Andy droppin all them bleeped out F bombs haha reminded me of that Happy Gilmore scene where he goes off on national tv cussing out the ball because it wouldn’t go in the hole 😂
When he said "Stealth technology" coffee shot out both my mouth and nose. The people involved that designed this atrocity have obviously NEVER had to diagnose and fix a problem out in the proverbial "field". This feels like a novelty product. Yeah it's a never before seen design but that's about it. This "UnderBoard" will only be purchased by people of means. Someone who never gets his hands dirty. Someone that replaces something immediately rather than fixing it. Reminds me of the Chrysler/Dodge Prowler or the Chevy SSR... Novelty
When my son became a engineer I told him over and over again. DO NO WASTE YOUR TIME TRYING TO REINVENT THE WHEEL! I hate Evinrude used their customer's to find out their product issues !
OMG............I lived through selling and servicing all the VRO problems, then FICHT, then going belly up once, then BRP FICHT (kinda), then G2, then Evinrude goes away again.........Now this. I did not think it could get worse..........BUT IT JUST DID. If ya remember, FORCE tired to so something similar....that was a resounding success wasn't it?. I have one saving grace. After 20+ years I retired, sold the dealership, and now all I have to worry about is servicing my own boat. Please, oh please, will you make a video of the first time someone rolls into your shop with one of these and a problem. It would be the highlight of my life in the marine world.
In my opinion, the new Aluma boats with Rotax are just perfect textbook examples where wheel has been tried to be reinvented... Nice videos though! Watching you from Finland. Could you someday do a comparison/Top 10 video of the 50-horse class? It's really popular here in northern Europe. Thanks and cheers 😎
We are glad too! Keep this crap over at Rotax and let them be responsible for it. It'll ultimately have crank bearing problems like all of their other 2 stroke engines! Haha
a diesel outboard would be better than a rotary lmao. I don't get why people want hp when a boat needs torque because the water is constant drag resistance
@@SoFloCamejo understandable, i just think if they're going to redo an outboard like this and its a new and inventive outboard to change the boating industry and you're coming from a motor company who owns trolling motors, GPS fish finders, kayaks, etc. you have the money to make something newer motor to put on the market that can match competitors because itll ball down to those who actually believe in it. like for example, i was a believer in Mercury since i had owned one for 3 years using it but over time, i dealt with Mercury issues i had to fix myself. since i have upgraded to a yamaha, i believe more into that motor because those are more durable than a mercury (in my opinion). Andy put out a video recently on a brand new Pro XS that is spit firing metal from its gears when starting up the motor. that is alarming and would make anyone stray from a merc. im not saying all Merc motors do that but to a consumer, that would make me want to switch to another motor. Evinrude has made only one fourstroke motor based on what Andy has researched and they didnt even make it. its about time they got on their A-game and be on competition with the outboard industry to give consumers options because honestly there should be no reason for the monopoly game to be involved with boating or fishing. fishing can be as expensive as you want it to be. yeah E-tec's are good im sure since those are somewhat popular, but there is a reason why your most common motors on boats today are either Mercury, Yamaha, or possibly Honda (even though Yamaha is owned by Honda)
Our G2 250 is currently out for ignition coil failure on cyl 5. Season OVER. Power steering about to fail for the second time. Doesn’t make me want to get involved with BRP.
I grew up on a lake back in the 1970s Myself and all of my friends dreamed of owning a sleek low profile boat, preferably a tunnel hull, with an inline 6 cylinder tower of power standing tall dark and handsome on the transom. For those of us who still like the somewhat striking appearance of those old Mercs these Rotax engines come up a little short.
They shafted their entire dealer network in a very cold way, oh-customers too, so now they can only put it on their own boats. Ever seen an outboard cowel with a crack or a chip? Ever seen a swim platform with a crack or a chip? One little bump and this thing is an insurance claim for a sunk outboard. Condensation will kill this in short time. I’m selling my boat with an Evinrude next spring as sadly I want to offload it before an injector goes now I have bought one with twin Hondas because I can buy parts for it for the next 10-20 years.
I have no interest in these, but Andy's reaction makes me want to buy 3 or 4 of them and bring them into Team Marine for service. If I video the service trip, it might be worth money as a viral video.
Don if you buy one and bring it to the shop I'll pay Jordan to shoot, edit and produce the video on it and give all of the TH-cam Ad revenue that the video generated for 10 years to you!
"what's wrong with an ... outboard? why does that not work?" If you applied the same logic to props, no one would ever invent a Sharrow design. BRP has always been an innovative company.
There are 2 glaring problems with the design that anybody who's been around boats knows are big No No's and for BRP's 22 year old window licking engineers to not be able to figure it out is truly sad. 1. Water will ALWAYS win and get past those 16 bolts and seal flooding the engine compartment. 2. Boat batteries ALWAYS die, the Rotax Underboard uses a water evacuation pump to keep the water out from flooding the engine compartment. Now you hopefully understand how dumb this it! ;)
Umm, it’s not the wheel. Why don’t we all just go back to wearing bell bottom jeans again. They worked right? The key to growth, allow yourself to be educated. How do they keep it dry? Sealed combined with an internal Air pump. The prop doesn’t sit any lower in the water then a standard outboard. The motor takes less movement to trim up than a standard motor. An upright motor trimmed up is going to come further back onto the rear deck trimmed all the way up then this motor will. This design extends the pontoon platform and entire 4 feet in length for usability. which is quite a bit. It creates a swim platform. Which is my wife’s favorite feature of the boat. Happy wife, happy life. Creates a great place to attach large coolers using their attachment system. That works really well I might add. Super nice feature that you can add two large rotomold coolers to your rear platform without using bungee cords or ratchet straps. This motor design changes the game in pontoon design and accessories. Do your research before you make a video.
🤣🤣🤣 Just take a minute and read the comments. Let that be your compass on if it’s a good design/idea or not. Just because it’s a new idea doesn’t mean it’s a good idea 👍🏻
I find this technically interesting, especially since it appears to use the powerhead developed for the last generation 150 Evinrude, but I am a motorhead. How are the 150 G2's holding up? I too am not certain that putting the motor so low is a great idea. Nevertheless, it might be a blessing in disguise that the new engine is under the Rotax name. Unlike Evinrude, BRP is not likely to shut down Rotax since it supplies engines for numerous applications.
The 115,140 and 150 3 cylinder are actually good. I've had multiple mechanics tell me that. They finally got some shit right with it and then pulled the plug
@@sdvten ya they should have just stuck with the g2 and fixed the issues on the bigger ones. Near the end they actually started to have it figured out. 2018s and up didn't have the steering issues. They replaced a bunch of parts and ignition. Changed the ecu mapping which before was responsible for the ones that blew up. The 115,140, and 150 were a massive upgrade again but it wad to late I guess in brps eyes
I'm not into boats but own a BRP (Skidoo) snowmobile powered by a Rotax 4-stroke. It's a great performing engine but ease of maintenance / working on it was far down the list of priorities when designing it. I think their mindset is that the original owner will likely sell it / buy a newer toy before it requires any major work.
Our issue is that people are going to spend thousands of dollars on this and we all know what the potential issues will before before it even hits the water. BRP is the kind of company to make an all glass car, promote it as having the best drivers visibility ever but hide the fact that 1 little door tap in the parking lot shatters the whole thing!!! Their marketing department is full of non stop BSer's!!!
@@sawmaster6095 it's half submerged, when you let off the wake will make it 100% underwater. Anything underwater has the potential to leak. And how would you ever notice a leak if it's always hidden under the deck? How do you trim the lower unit out of the water? Cant

The Alumacraft dealers I spoke with all said they loved the boat improvements. Ride/ build/ features. None of them like the “under-board”. I think 90% will be standard outboards as long as BRP will allow it.
Your honesty and rant on BRP was hilarious and true. What a terrible idea for an outboard. It was probably designed by the EPA. Wait until they come out with outboards with exhaust fluid tanks like DEF systems on today’s diesel trucks. They already ruined the trucking industry, the boating industry will be next. BRP probably got a kickback from the government to build that garbage. Thanks for video I agree 💯 🇺🇸
If they were going to do an engine shaped like that it should be an opposed piston engine so they could get real efficiency and reliablity gains... this engine is just a stopgap IMO yet again.
Hell yea brother 💯 💪 I'm right there with ya !! 25 years in the shop and I talk and ack alot like u do great to see other people's opinions match mine !!!
Andy, I saw on one of your other blogs about Mercury laying off 300 people. You were trying to get with Mercury people to get answers about Mercury's future direction. I saw online a rather eye-opening 40HP outboard engine that was being tested which uses a new type if rotary engine made by a company called Liquid Piston XTS210. This is lighter, simpler, and has great characteristics for a future production engine and had the name Mercury on it. If you get to talk to the Mercury people, ask how that project is coming along.
Give it a chance man. I hate the negativity. I think it looks fantastic on the pontoon boats and having all that space at the back is awesome! Not sure on the fishing boat stuff. I still want to see a Alumacraft without the optional platform on the back. P.S. my Evinrude G2 is a fantastic motor. It does so many things very well. Besides the other fit and finish design changes BRP made on the Alumacraft boats are amazing. The aluminum boat market was do for some changes and this will shake things up.
GIVE IT CHANCE MMMMMMAAAAAANNNNNNNNNNNNN. I don't think so junior. And if you think Alumacraft has made such better gains than the competition, then you don't know anything about the industry.

@@JR-ho5qm Well said about the Alumacraft boats. Not so much on the Rotax. Remember what was said in this video. Evinrude has been taken out of the equation . You see some, but not enough, people saying this might be a good thing. I have followed this industry for years. Rotax is not tied in with boats. No matter what you think or say. Yes it is with other watercraft, but that is a whole different segment of the market. And this motor will not be included in many avenues where Mercury and Yamaha dominate. Now what you don't seem to get is this man ,and other owners of major shops ,try to tell you what they know works. But, you are not really listening. Oh, you say you are. But not really. And we can go round and round on this subject. You are definitely somewhere affiliated with BRP. You are way too knowledgeable and well versed not to be. It's the old innovate or die mindset. Well, it all depends if what you come up with . A motor that is going to take the boating industry to a redesign just to have these motors hanging five foot off the back?
@@charlesdriggers199 I’m not affiliated with BRP but I am a huge Evinrude fan, I know how good there G2 is when properly rigged. ( everything under one roof) . I am very loyal to this Rotax motor because I know it’s G2 technology however I am more loyal to my marine dealer that no longer is allowed to sell Evinrude/Rotax. I wish that BRP never made this decision because I think customers get better attention and support at dealers that focus only on boats rather than multiple things As far as I know this new design will mount on all boats just like a regular outboard. As much as I believe in the technology I’m also not sure it will take off. There is to much negativity and mis information/ hate about the product. @@TeamMarineService I sincerely doubt it, he asked me to leave his store I was there getting bike parts for my motorcycle and one of my friends/ customers asked about it, I said oh you mean the underboard.....
Yea, when they couldn't get the ACE900 engine crank PTO coupling to hold, they made it "replaceable". After that, they just couldn't seem to put grease in it. AND THEN they decided putting full pressure lube to it was a better idea. Hey......IT ONLY TOOK THEM 5+ YEARS to figure it out! That's just one marine platform...How long will it take them to figure this out, and how many parts will be serviceable, yet built to last?
@@TeamMarineService don't get me wrong, they are FUN machines. BUT!! When 95% of MARINE RENTAL companies around the WORLD use Yamaha, there is a reason. You can't have innovation, without homework.
I stopped at my local Alumacraft dealer 2 days ago to order a new boat. They pushed really hard to sell me on how great, cool and innovative this new motor is. I just can't get over how ugly it is! And the rear deck that goes over the top makes the boat look like it it belongs in a Batman movie.
I mean to be fair its pretty clear why they did this, they wanted a low profile outboard so they wouldn’t have a tower of power standing in your way. They accomplished that, but at what cost? Also its hilarious watching this guy try and understand how this outboard will lift out of the water when its literally the same pivot as a regular outboard.
@@TeamMarineService the clamp on looks very traditional, pivoting at the top of the clamp/mount. Granted, the whole deck above the engine thing is weird, it does look like its designed to lift out of the way but not clear yet if it automatically does this or passively, and what happens if someone is standing on it.
This is the biggest problem that these new brand owners put on a legacy brand. They try to reinvent the wheel instead of just making quality outboard motors. Evinrude outboards have a reputation to be hard wearing motors simple by design but strong to last. My evinrude 1975 engine looks in top shape for how old it is.
Update, AlumaCraft sales are tanking. Not sure about Manitu pontoons. Talked to a dealer that worked on one of these and he’s an Evinrude fan and said it’s a disaster. He said that all the turns in the driveshaft kills the power along with all the other issues you mentioned. BRP needs to give on the 2-stroke once and for all. I bought a new Alumacraft in 2020. Alumacraft kept asking me why I didn’t get an Evinrude?? Basically said I wanted a Yamaha and I’ll go buy a Lund if that what it takes. BRP is going to eventually kill Alumacraft. It’s a shame.
I agree 100% with you. What a joke this new look. I have had every Johnson and Evinrude and still love them to this day. You do not get too many chances for a second chance, but this in my opinion is a mistake. My last tour to Evinrude all was bet one Etech. Mercury has eaten BRPs lunch with putting the Mercury on many of their boats and selling the combo package. If BRP wants to get back into the outboard business do it with a reliable 4 stroke engine line up from 3-300 HP. Don’t forget 9.9 and such. Make the small engines in AMERICA Tohatsu should not be sold under Evinrude or Mercury badge. Yamaha and Honda are such strong players because of product Quality. I want a made in America lineup of outboards that will employ Americans with the high Quality of Yamaha and Honda. I recently visited a plant in Asia and was invited to tour a monster outboard company. Don’t tell me we can’t out perform this crap with our technology. I still covet my 9.9 2004 Johnson one of the best outboards I have ever owned. People will pay for a great USA made outboard and aftermarket service. Let’s face it our outlook on quality needs to change. If BRP survives this offering ( and I hope for them that they do) please revisit Evinrude and Johnson and repeating myself make a classic outboard under the badges of Evinrude and Johnson. While I applauded the innovation of Mercury and its founder, I am still a Evinrude guy. Like Ford vs Chevy a great GMC vs Chrysler that is your own personal choice. All are great! But when on the water and your motor takes a dump you can’t walk home. As an aside let’s also bring back a few wood boats.
Dang! He's right about the trim! I've owned, and professionally built and worked on boats for over 40 years... Buy an underwater motor? K-N-O-T HAPPENING! There is NO WAY we'd want a piece of junk underwater motor even if they gave it to us because there's way too many EXTRA THINGS that can go wrong with it besides the regular issues of normal marine engines! And this manufacturer builds an engine with the possibility of even more problems! It's not even U.S. made like our older and "PROVEN" OMC's! One of my Evinrude's is over 45 years old and still running perfect. Like to see an underwater engine match that! NOT! They got to be kidding trying to push an unproven underwater engine that we're supposed to make a major investment on! K-N-O-T-! H-A-P-P-E-N-I-N-G-! Get a bigger boat (like JAWS) instead. If we get anything at all out of a Rotax, it's a good LAUGH! Rotax's are NOT NORMAL. Want Advice? DON'T BUY ! By the way, one of the Evinrude's I mentioned that still "runs perfect" is a 1977, 85hp on a 1972 Glastron GT-150 - James Bong Live and Let Die that still holds the world's record for 110 feet thru the air 50 years later. It had an Evinrude 150 Yup, EVINRUDE, not an underwater pip-squeak!
I'll keep my Barletta Corsa 23U with 200 Merc, thank you. I did own a bulletproof 1985 Evinrude 70HP with about a million hours on it. It's still being used by its current owner.
Let's see now - the powerhead practically sits underwater and there's two 90 degree turns in the drive works. What could possibly be wrong with that? And it will only be available on the boat brands they sell. That sounds like a GREAT marketing plan to capture a bigger share of the market. What a real POS - can't believe they gave up on Evinrude in favor of this thing. The folks who dreamed up this thing should be forced to come out to work on them when they crap out.
How would the intake stay above the water line in wavy conditions? Lol... Also how is it more efficient when the powerhead (brick design) is being pushed through the water?
So what they are doing here is working up to their modular power unit, the next step is this unit with an electric motor in it.The Ghost project is a power unit thinking rather than an outboard type system.
BRP needs to sell the Evinrude brand to someone who wants to bring Evinrude/ Johnson back to life. I still think under new ownership there would be a lot of old loyal anglers willing to give them a try

Would that not be because of govt regulation? Aka epa.
I want my outboard loud and menacing! NOT QUITE! 😖 those big 70, 80, and 90s V6 Evinrude and Johnson’s were so cool looking! They sound great too!
Maybe i'm getting old! lol
I want my bassboat quit and fast but motorcycle loud
What about the early 80's Black Max's? I was OMC growing up but those 150, 200, 225 Black Max's gave me wood, still do.

I miss those old straight 6 engines mercury used to manufacture.

I did not think it could get worse..........BUT IT JUST DID. If ya remember, FORCE tired to so something similar....that was a resounding success wasn't it?. I have one saving grace. After 20+ years I retired, sold the dealership, and now all I have to worry about is servicing my own boat. I am curious as to why they think this is a 'better' product than the other outboards on the market.

What a joke! I'm almost glad BRP didn't force this on Evinrude. Rotax Outboards is dead before it even begins. Garbage!!!
We are glad too! Keep this crap over at Rotax and let them be responsible for it. It'll ultimately have crank bearing problems like all of their other 2 stroke engines! Haha

If evinrude came back, I would have made it a four stroke and called it the “ghost” something like the SHO or PRO XS
Ghost was actually the original name of this project from BRP, they announced it about a year ago
I'm damn glad that my Evinrude is an old looper!
The engine is designed around a very scientific mathematical calculation based on swept volume of the piston and in inefficiency of the IC Eng.

I thought people would be happy to see a 2 stroke back on the market
@@EmergeFromTheAshes1 The engine in this Ghost abortion of an outboard is supposed to be the same as was in the 115, 140 and 150 3 cylinder G2s.

@@sdvten ya they should have just stuck with the g2 and fixed the issues on the bigger ones. Near the end they actually started to have it figured out. 2018s and up didn't have the steering issues. It has to be!
Some efficiency has to be lost by adding another set of gears too. More complicated it seems too.

This is the biggest problem that these new brand owners put on a legacy brand. They try to reinvent the wheel instead of just making quality outboard motors.
It probably stays "dry" like the G2. "Don't have to service it for 5 years so the covers stay sealed longer"
