    This is a very incomplete piece of information about growing saffron which I have been doing in Michigan for over 30 years. Saffron requires a cold climate to survive. It is dormant from late spring and all summer long. I sprouts in the fall of the year and blooms immediately. It then continues to grow throughout the fall and early winter, but is stays green for the entire winter regardless of the severity of the cold. In late winter when the snow melts there lies the still green saffron leaves much like very long grass leaves. As the temp warms in spring the saffron becomes dormant as the heat of summer arrives and then stays dormant all summer long. It sprouts again as the fall temp cools and begins the cycle again. Cold temp is an absolute must for saffron growth and survival. Saffron corms should be purchased in summer and planted outdoors to experience the cold of the fall whether in a pot or not. This is very important. It also should be kept out of doors all winter long.

      @Isaiah Sagwar What exactly do you mean. Where are you located and what is your experience? My point in my comments is that growing saffron in a pot should not imply that saffron could be grown indoors as might be assumed with a pot planting. A 4 season environment is mandatory for its life cycle. The original video does not mention this.

      @@bbobading so you don't dig it up in the winter that's good. Does it propagate by itself from the bulbs. I live in central Ohio and thought about starting a small farm. Saffron and lavender are what I am thinking so far. Lavender seems straight forward, saffron on the other hand not so much. But if it doesn't have to be dug up and reproduces itself it would be something to experiment with.

    • @bbobading
      @bbobading 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@georgelahmon4539 The saffron corms enlarge and cleave as the plant grows through the years. To propagate them, the plants should be dug up in the summer dormant season in order to separate the cleaved corms and then replant them. The roots of the plant also grow little baby corms at the ends of the roots which theoretically can be separated replanted but I have never tried this as the baby corms have always been quite small. I theory the root corms should form new plants and produce flowers but this has not happened with my plants. I think this because I have not kept up with an annual fertilizer plan to induce reproduction. I guess I am just happy with amount of saffron that I get each year. I hope this helps.

      @@shwetajune82 perhaps no snow though. I have not been to India. But I thought if I ever go there, I'll but saffron bulbs. But now I know they dont grow in tropical lands.

      @@eduardochavacano The northern part of India contains some part of the mountain range that also has Mt Everest (Everest is in Nepal though). So yes, plenty of places in India have snow throughout the year. Historically, India has also been the top 5 producers of saffron in the world, ofcourse Iran produces most of the saffron consumed in the world. India also has quite a long history of using Kesar (saffron) other than food and medicines, saffron was also used by Hindu and Buddhist monks to colour their robes, so it has religious importance as well.
