Vadodara couple’s tiny room yields big success in Saffron cultivation

- An industrious couple hailing from Vadodara achieved a groundbreaking feat by cultivating Kashmiri saffron within the confines of a 10-foot by 10-foot room. Both professionals, with Vaibhav engaged in stock trading and Aastha pursuing a research career, reaped a remarkable yield of 20 to 25 grams of saffron in their initial attempt. Diverging from their conventional careers, the couple delved into hydroponics and discovered aeroponics, a technique enabling the cultivation of saffron. Procuring saffron seeds from Kashmir, they successfully cultivated saffron flowers in their maiden effort. Vaibhav and Aastha aspire to transition their startup into an educational platform, offering training to those interested in adopting this farming method. Recognizing the high value of saffron as a commodity, the couple envisions Gujarat evolving into an exporter of spice.

People usually use saffron on rare occasion due to high price but if the cost comes down they will start using it daily.....this is a good idea to increase supply
If the price comes down, farming this will become unprofitable. Just like every other crop in India.
It is comparatively easy to grow saffron under controlled environmental conditions in any part of the world by proper selection of corms which are of specific size and season in which corms are collected, properly stored till planting.
The most challenging job is to grow these corms further for multiplication of corms under soil and make them to produce floral primordia in these newly developed corms. Every time if corms are to be brought from Kashmir then the project cost will be too high to sustain.
But that's the only reason why the GI tags are still possibly applicable. If the business cuts its ties with the kashmiri people then there would be lesser opportunities and interest for them.
True!
A new breed of Engineered Farmers should come up in India.

25 grams Matlab nearly 4000 rupees ...v Good but what about the electric bill for running AC and humidifier, fertilizer..... I know this is initial stage... Hope for success & profits in future
I think solar generated enegry would be enough
It is a experiment brother to cultivate in different environment in future they will modify the plant to grow in large scale in normal environment also.
In Gujarat solar is used mostly household and electricity bill is very less.

Very good initiation, will bring kudos to gdp.

Well done.
20-25 gm hardly anything compared to what price it sells. I think the couple will make millions of rupees selling the idea to others under the guise of education than actually growing saffron. This is Indian jugad at play.
They know how to make money easily…. And steadily
It was a pilot project, the objective of which was to test the technique and not make profit. Profit making is our target for the coming year. Would encourage you to look at the positive here:)
@vaibhavpatel748 most of the people who write comments on you tube are foolish , they have zero idea of pilot , start ups you will waste your time explaining to each and every one of them

Saffron is much used in south India & across world where Indians and Indian restaurants are present.Almonds have much demand in India. Borges peeled almonds are sold highest in India. Indian startups, traders and companies should start production more
Wow that's great! I guess if saffron increases in supply , the cost may come down?
That's the hope
@@vaibhavpatel748Omg thnk u for the pilot project by this way the benefits of saffron and it's herbal properties will be beneficial to everyone, especially good for woman who come from bpl they can have this as a medicine during their pregnancy and child care also adding benefits to cosmetic industry and by this type of farming you are also cutting the one side of monopoly which is kashmiri state as it's the same species of flower and the most imp and major benefit is that you are also Savin this beautiful plant as due to severe climate changes may soon get extinct because the growing conditions are not favourable when you can create an artificial one to grow them also you have save quiet an ample space. As open farm land for farming it costs three times for caring and Growing such a sensitive plant , thnk u for being a game changer 🙏🏻🙏🏻.
Does this lab grown have same properties and quality as wild ones curious to know 🤔
It is exactly the same as the seed from which it grows is from Kashmir itself.
What a great news
Good job done
Impressive
I have a 1bhk vacant room and I need guidance with the multiplication stage
We should compare the kashmiri saffron and this saffron and see if the aroma is the same.
I can vouch for it and it's the same :)

How to sell safron that ypu grow is there any option to sell to goverment directly?
Direct Sales:
Local Markets and Fairs: Participate in local farmers' markets, food festivals, and exhibitions to sell your saffron directly to consumers.
Online Platforms: Utilize e-commerce platforms like Amazon, Etsy, or your own website to reach a wider audience.
Social Media: Leverage social media platforms to market your saffron and connect with potential buyers.
Local Grocery Stores and Specialty Shops: Partner with local grocery stores and specialty food shops to sell your saffron.
Government Procurement:
While it's less common for individual farmers to directly sell to the government, you can explore the following avenues:
State Agricultural Departments: Contact your local agricultural department to inquire about government procurement programs or subsidies for saffron farmers.
Agricultural Cooperatives: Joining a cooperative can help you collectively sell your saffron to government agencies or exporters.
Exporting Your Saffron:
Spice Board of India: Register with the Spice Board of India to obtain an export license.
Quality Standards: Ensure your saffron meets international quality standards to facilitate exports.
Packaging and Branding: Invest in attractive packaging and branding to differentiate your product.
International Market Research: Identify potential export markets and establish connections with importers.
Remember, building trust and establishing a strong reputation for quality is crucial for long-term success in the saffron market.

The return on investment is extremely low considering the cost of buying the bulbs, Keeping the plants in lower temperatures in humid/hot/tropical climates. As a hobby project it may look good but is not sustainable at small scales and would require crores of investment to setup on turnkey industrial scale.

Dear Mr. Nishant Banodkar,
I'd like to provide a clearer explanation regarding the phases of saffron cultivation:
Flowering and Harvesting (August to early December): This is the period when saffron flowers bloom, and the stigmas are harvested to produce the valuable spice.
Corm Multiplication (Mid-December to Early March): During this phase, the harvested corms are divided and replanted to produce new corms. This is a crucial step in saffron cultivation, as it ensures the continuation of the crop.
Dormancy (Mid-March to Late May): The corms enter a dormant period, requiring specific conditions for optimal growth and development.
It's important to note that saffron corms have a specific growth cycle and cannot be stored like fruits or vegetables. This limits the possibility of year-round, mass production.
Regarding labor-intensive aspects, the harvesting and processing of saffron require meticulous handwork, which cannot be fully automated. Additionally, the initial investment for setting up an indoor saffron cultivation facility is substantial due to the need for controlled environmental conditions.
I hope this explanation clarifies the complexities of saffron cultivation. If you have any further questions, please don't hesitate to ask.
