    LYRICS:
    CHORUS:
    Heave lads! Ho lads!
Forget the comforts of home; you're a nomad
We've lost so much since we first started
Are our hearts cold or are we cold-hearted?
So pray to your lord or your foreman
That the sun might rise in the morning
They told us hell was warm
But our empire fell for shelter from the storm
    VERSE 1:
On the run from London town
Nothing left but rubble there to plunder now
    Torn asunder, buried underground
Beneath the tundra and a hundred weight of brothers drowned
Now we're gonna need another crown
So huddle round, hunker down, man the shovels, plough
And every hundred paces pray and lay another down
Another mother, son or lover lost, the frost is out
For lonely drifters in the snow drifts, won't be scuppered now
Stay devout, tough it out, til the sun is out
Trust the censor, shun dissenters, hunt and flush them out
Keep the faith and trust there's grace behind the thunderclouds
Or fall in line and march in time against the climate, proud
    What are we becoming now?
Is this the life we prayed for?
    Time is running out
    There's nothing left but labour
We write our future in the ice like it was pen and paper
Leave for future generations more than just a generator
We must never waver; this is the price we pay for
Safety one day for our children on the path we pave them
In the end know that history depends
On an empire forged in the flames of what we gave up
    CHORUS:
    Heave lads! Ho lads!
Forget the comforts of home; you're a nomad
We've lost so much since we first started
Are our hearts cold or are we cold-hearted?
So pray to your lord or your foreman
That the sun might rise in the morning
They told us hell was warm
But our empire fell for shelter from the storm
    VERSE 2:
Turn your collars to the wind
    As our odyssey begins
Feel the ice creeping in until your bones sing
As the tempest descends and your ears ring
That's the bells of the church that we're preaching
Now grieving is a luxury we spun to weave our cloaks
Comfort, warmth, and plenty feel like centuries ago
The storm won't crush our spirits like a tent beneath the snow
Every upper lip gets stiff at 20 C below
No gold or silver, coal's the only thing of worth to me
The only precious metal to our name would be the mercury
That fragile strip of burgundy that ever hurtles to the deep
Alerting us as Mother Nature's taking every cursed degree
I've nothing left, my only treasure is my word to keep
Keep bellies filled, treat the ill, and preserve the heat
But can I keep the peace as we bleed through adversity?
How's a shepherd supposed to lead
Without a dog to herd the sheep?
These choices that I make, I make to save our nation
What's a little sawdust when you face annihilation?
Is childhood so sacred? Or just resources wasted?
Every value that I thought I had debased and razed to save us
    CHORUS:
    Heave lads! Ho lads!
Forget the comforts of home; you're a nomad
We've lost so much since we first started
Are our hearts cold or are we cold-hearted?
So pray to your lord or your foreman
That the sun might rise in the morning
They told us hell was warm
But our empire fell for shelter from the storm
    VERSE 3:
Growing up they told no two snowflakes are the same
And every one's a wonder, something not to take in vain
    Of Mother Nature's beauty
    Of the universe at play
Seems she's abstained from duty, left us here and turned away
Fingers splintered into kindling and hearts as dark as coal
As heat and hope are dwindling we march towards our goal
Committed to the hymns we sing so after all is told
The generations after us aren't cast into the cold
So burn us in the furnace, let our souls ignite the flame
Use our bones to stoke the embers
Use our blood to oil the chains
We are nothing now but engines rending flesh to find a way
And as we fall we die to light a brighter day
Every shiver will deliver us deliverance in time
Burn the incense of our innocence and in a sense we thrive
Pray the future that we're building will be worth its weight in lives
So take heed but take no pity as the city must survive

Frostpunk is a truly special game, one that truly confronts you with momentous decisions and forces you to see the outcomes of your choices. Combine that with Stupendium's master craft with lyrics and flow, and you get a real jewel of a song.

    • @quartzintherough
      @quartzintherough 2 ปีที่แล้ว +75

My favorite thing about the game is that it's not afraid to make a point at the cost of "fun". I remember in my first playthrough, I really didn't want to pick either Faith or Order because I saw the writing on the wall for both of them (totalitarian theology/utilitarian tyranny), but my citizens needed something, so I had to choose.
I remember being frustrated by this choice, but the point of games is to make us feel, even negative emotions like grief or frustration. In hindsight, it was absolutely the right game design decision, and it made me feel more immersed and invested in the story, so I regard it fondly.

Eh, not really about facing your consequences. It stuck to me clearly that one reviewer consigned a child to death at the end of his run, and was told pretty much immediately afterwards that he was a 'good' ruler (not that he ruled well, just that he made what the devs called good decisions throughout his campaign).

    • @therealgaben5527
      @therealgaben5527 2 ปีที่แล้ว +16

I like how you can pretty much avoid doing unethical decisions during the game but making any little mistake can lead to you making those decisions. • @BrianBors

I think about this question often. Would it not make more sense to simply give up? And you know, I think I might in such a dire scenario. There is no way to know what you would do for real. But there are more than 7 billion of us. There will be enough mad people to keep the engines on. I hope they save enough Camus books to keep them going to carry the lantern to the next generation. I Trully believe that frostpunk helped me stay alive.
Last few years, especially with the current state of the world and that funky little sickness going around, combined with the joys of the modern political and ecenomic landscape, ive felt very little hope for the future and resentment for those who came before me. thats when i found the stupendium, and his origional Frostpunk song.
And my god, it was like a breath of fresh air.
The worldbuilding and the sheer resilience of human character it displayed got me directly into the games, and since then ive been thinking back to its core messages and beliefs to get me through some of my darkest moments. It reminds me that this is what humans do. We adapt. We change. We strive to be a bit better than yesterday for those who come after us, and we have been doing it since before we were even human.
And something that helps me remember that belief, is from your song. It is our duty to leave the future generation more than just a generator, and whilst i doubt that il be building a walking mechanical automiton to handle coal mining for my kids in an ice bound apocalypse, that line has helped me leave the world a little bit better than it was yesterday.
I doubt this will actually be read mate, but i want you to know that despite how preechy and over the top this comment may sound, i mean every word of it, and you deserve to know that your content is making the world a little better than it was yesterday.
Keep it up mate, You rock. Try not to get frostbite.

To echo what I've seen a bunch of people say: this is awesome and I love the original as well. One thing I haven't seen posted: the more professional mixing and harmonies on the remaster makes it feel far more professional, shows your growth as a musician and I think is all the better for the song.
Something that I think was lost though, is a certain marching song aspect to the original. It felt like something I could see the New Londoners singing as they mined for coal. The lack of strong harmonies gave it the impression of enthusiastic amateurs (which, based on your comments in the description I think reflect you at the time :D ).
Overall I do think the changes have shown your growth and are all the better for the song, but I think its important to note what was lost along the way. Just in case it isn't clear, I'm a huge fan and have been since the JT music Fact Rap.

When you put it that way, this sounds like a sequel. Like this was sung after the storm, after the same band of survivors have been hardened and attuned to working together for their very survival
It’s the same tune and rhythm, but still different in a little way. Smoother, the working parts fitted more cleanly.
In other words similar to how the new mix has made it all much cleaner and more professional at the cost of some of the feels of the old one

@@error-datalost7586 I like that idea. Like a song that was written during the difficult times, but is now sung after the story is finished, looking back on the giants who's shoulders on which you now stand.

Everyone pulls their weight and does what they're told, but in return I do not lead my people astray and by the end not a single person has to work and children remain home safe and warm along with their parents. I have the same opinion, emphasis on lower voice register and more distinct voices in the original just work better for me. That said, background mixing seems to have improved, I liked the slight silencing at the beginning of "Every upper lip gets stiff..." bit, and in the second half of last verse you can really hear the desperation in the instrumentals.
Edit: I've listened again, this time in headphones with surround sound, and holy cow does it hit! I'm still not convinced about new chorus, but the harmonies and more pronounced background give the song a really "punchy" and emotional quality. Sweet lord and about the harmonies! THE HARMONIES!!! T HE H A R M O N I E S!!!!!
The lyrics are also so much clearer now, I could actually hear the individual words. The timing is so much better and so much more rhythmic, it has that restraint that shows so much more control of your voice and the beat. That percussion is so much more powerful with that ostinato on the strings truly shining on the background, rather than just a wall of sound that has a melody somewhere in there.
This song has always been one of my favorites, but also highly inaccesible for me, so many sounds, so many stimulation from EVERYWHERE and it all blurred together. I enjoyed *a lot* the original, but this one? I'm F E E L I N G it!!!
Also right after the intro at 0:34??? That silence and then that inverted chord???? That's like the best thing ever??????? akjfhnakdgnkrasfdn this is so, so, so much more epic. Also the chorus at 3:19, gimme more o'dem VOWELS!

This song in particular hit me so deep I actually had to go and buy the game because I NEEDED to play the game that inspired such a master piece. Amazing work.

When you began remastering songs i had hopes you would do this one someday, and that day has finally come!
Thank you for finally coming around and doing it!

Personally, I think the new chorus is a bit too clean. The original felt much more like workers trying to keep their spirits high as they go through the torturous daily grind, and that's what I loved about it. I all other aspects, I think this is a fine update! The dips in the beat makes it so it never gets old, and the whole song feels so much more determined now.

It's the bright electronic sound that seems a little off on the chorus, I think. Agreed on the older version sounding more like a workers chant.

Depending on when the original was released, it could be before the last Great Storm. And the remaster during On The Edge.

Quite excited to see the one truly terrifying Stupendium song get a remaster. Already had a listen to the song and it's so neat! Beefy chorus go brrr! Also making the scarf match the environment instead of it being yellow all throughout is such a nice touch! That's why I'm absolutely a sucker for the Stupendium remasters. The little invisible VFX that make the world of difference and tickle my brain quite a bit.

The scarf not only matches the environment, but also represents the 2 Purpose paths:
      Red for Order
      Purple for Faith
      such a nice touch

I swear, every one of their songs gives me chills from the sheer mastery it presents so beautifully. They are an artist, and a damn good one at that.

I feel like it needs to be said, but the world Frostpunk presents is genuinely terrifying. Everything we know pretty much depends on the sun's heat. Losing that is an absolute death sentence, surviving is nothing more than a delay of the end, and this game truly emphasises that feeling of utter despair and hopelessness.

Shelter From the Storm was the first Stupendium song I heard, so it'll always hold a special place in my heart. This remaster feels how listening to the original felt for the first time; the new harmonies and ramped up bass and instrumental changes make it feel like its own song entirely!

After this remaster and dumping a good 200 hours into frostpunk, i cant help but notice things like some of the fx in the background are directly from the thawing and freezing sounds, love it!

I cannot stop listening to this song!!! The lyrics are so well crafted, and it actually makes me feel a bit better about when I eventually leave this earth. I used to be scared that i wouldn't get to do everything i wanted to do before i passed, but if you can make someone's life a little better, thats what you give back to the world. The kindness you gave that person will be carried on, even if your name is no longer remembered
