Mahalo nui! My guitar has been in its case for nearly two decades. I bought it as a present to myself for quitting smoking for good. All of the turmoil in the world, and big changes in my life, deciding to retire from everything, and I've space for this now. I am so happy! My first lesson. My grandpa Pu'u I am sure is smiling. He was an early Hawaiian entertainer and toured to the mainland around 1918 and also the orient. So good to, after a busy life, to consider my roots of where some of the creativity came from in my mixed race dance. Happy!
I have been coming back to this video for a few years now. And it is still the best intro session out there. My love for Hawaiian music and culture are deep. I used to just listen to it in the morning to relax the kids and take me back to Kauai and Hanalei. It feels really special to be able to play some of this magical tradition. I will take what you have taught me and treat it with the respect it deserves. And, if you know of a good Ukelele video for a 4 and 6 year old, please let me know. they love their papas guitar but even my smallest is huge! Mahalo and Aloha.
Thank you for this! I've wanted to play slack key forever but needed a simple way to ease into it. I used to live in Hawaii and this will help bring back the feeling of the home of my heart~
I am loving this intro, thank you Curtis. My left fingers are so sore, can’t hold down a string yet- I’m inspired by your focus and precision. Some day I’ll be able to do the first exercise 😂❤
Thank you Curtis, I used to live in Hawaii, I love the Hawaiian guitar sound, and I'm finally beginning to learn slack-key. I will practice this lesson, and look forward to the next one.
Aloha Curtis, and mahalos for taking the the time to prepare and share this great little lesson. What a perfect little snippet! Short, sweet and directly to the point. I wish everyone was a talented at teaching such basic fundamentals as you have in this short video, and I hope you'll do some more for us sometime soon!
Thank you. I was doing it wrong rhythmwise. It's bass then treble string. I was playing bass and bass string as in Travis style. Now I've got the hang of it. Thanks.
Mahalo nui loa. I've dabbled at guitar but really wanted to get the hang of slack-key because I miss the islands so much. This is really helping me get the hang of things!
Aloha brah! I'm from the islands but never really got into slack key but was big on uke tho! I learned so much more from this short 7min video than from all the other TH-cam videos about slack key playing... Mahalo nui loa!
I look for to leaving one of my acoustics in slack key . The slack key may actually help that old neck too hopefully. Less tension.. To anyone out there that might have a decent acoustic with a wavy neck, maybe slack key is the guitars destiny... In my case, Either way, that old Blueridge is staying in slack key. 440, I actually had to raise the strings after adjustment on the neck from buzzing. I was thinking I might have to make it a slide guitar or at least a partial refret. Slack key seems to let it be more playable. And who doesn't love Slack Key once you hear it? I am hooked... lol. Thanks Brother for getting us going!
I play slack key. I had two guitar . The full size one is tuned to DGDGBD. I use this guitar if I need to play the carter style or bass notes. The other guitar is a 1/2 or baby size...shorter classical nylon. What I did is I remove the 6th bass string so the tuning become GDGBD. In addition , I replace the 5th string with a nylon high E string and tune it to high G. I can do that because the baby size has a shorter lenghth and the nylon can take the tension. Why I do that because for some picking (particularly the banjo style) , too much bass sound bad.
I always compensate for the tension difference by using lower gauged strings (3 strings) -using open e low to high: e-B-E-G#-b-e which is a whole step above slack (D) tuning
Aloha Curtis, I love Slack Key Guitar. I've never plaid guitar, nor any instrument for that matter. I want to learn slack key. Where would be a good place to start? Mahalo
Woo thanks!!! I will try in two three days practice again, i got a guitar, i learned E,G,A minor+major and DMajor. Now my fingers hurt 😂 I want this piece “Kalena Kai” With changing the tune looks super! Is your Guitar like a Western guitar Style? How i get this metallic long sound in a common Guitar? (Getting other strings etc. Hard or soft, whats better?) Thank u!!
Question. Is it possible to learn Travis picking, European tuning, and slack key techniques, open G tuning, kind of at the same time? Can't decide which way I want to go. For example, do the slack key masters play European tuned guitars sometimes?
@ right. My question is just. Is “slack tuning” just another name for open tuning? Or is there something else that I’m missing? Because I’m aware of open tunings and alternate tunings. I’d love to find a new way of tuning that I never knew about.

I love this! Can't get the pdf file to open though. It's been a long time since this video was uploaded. Is there another way to access it?
Great lesson! Mahalo!

So slack key is just open “G” tuning. Or any open tuning?
Is that what he said
There are many different tunings in slack. He is tuned to "Taro Patch".
@ right. My question is just. Is “slack tuning” just another name for open tuning? Or is there something else that I’m missing? Because I’m aware of open tunings and alternate tunings. I’d love to find a new way of tuning that I never knew about.
@timothycormier3494 yes. It's just open tuning.
@ I thought so. Thanks man
So G6? GBDE
i start now hhh...thanks
Mahalo
Thank you. I've traveled through your paradise a few times. Enjoyed every moment and love to culturally reverse-engineer our 🎶 😆🤙

Open tuning.......soooooo that's why it's slack😅😆😁😄😁😅😂🤣🎸🎸
That E chord shape actually sounded pretty nice in the slacked-key tuning.
Hi, here it is. Hope it's helpful. : )
