  • Hatching Quail Eggs in the JANOEL12 Incubator is easy. amzn.to/3nT4kjP
    Making your own brooding box is also something that anyone can do for your quail after hatching. Being able to breed your own animals is a huge step to self reliance.
    Check your city bylaws before breeding any birds, even if they are tiny, and quiet, quail.

    This Janoel 12 is an excellent incubator particularly for quail. I bought a unit in November 2017 and raised several batches of quail adding to my breeding stock. I highly recommend this.

    Your first batch is amazing!!!! I'm learning so much from you, and I'm sure it will change as time goes on, so I will be keeping up with you, so that I will know what works best by next spring when I get mine. Even the comment information gives us others experiences that we can learn from. Learning with someone that is learning too, is so much better than with books! Great video! Sheila

    Congrats on your first hatch! I was so excited on my first hatch, I did video's on them too but you sounded much calmer than I did lol. I felt like an expected grandma, I didn't even get that excited when my goat kidded first time. I haven't shared the same experience as Bill below I find quail much more forgiving than chicken eggs however the chicks themselves more sensitive once hatched. and with splayed legs I have had a few with 100% treatment success, I also have had success with curled toes treating them with what looks like quail snow shoes lol. I give them 25 days, often they hatch, the humidity vs temp plays havoc on classic hatch times and I jus figure it doesn't cost anything to give them extra time. What changed me on that I threw some eggs in the bin and heard pipping from the bin at 20 days, meaning I had thrown away a live chick that was trying to hatch. I also no longer have a lockdown time, the turner I leave in there, mine turns every 2 hours, the only down fall to this when you know they are hatching I reset the turner because the little burgers will get stuck in a rail if he's between rails and I take them out a bit sooner, I also went to aquariums for brooders and reptile heaters under them that are adjustable. I've been selling 100-300 of these a month, of all my animals these have paid my feed bill for all them. Between these little guys and roosters, I have a clientele of orientals that utilize and buy up as many as I can hatch. I also use puppy pads, saves a lot of time, with one handful of pine shavings and change the pads every other day, its like changing a diaper, you just roll it up all nice and contained. I think in the next xouple weeks I too will do a new video on my quail, I have a completely different set up then I did when I first started. Unless you sell them quail will cost you more to feed out than the meat they provide. They eat a lot. Excellent video. Oh and hey after the chick is 3 days old you can switch that heat out to a regular bulb 40-60 watt and thats plenty they don't require the heat as a chicken does.

      @FoodForThought.  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I love the idea of the puppy pads and sawdust as I actually don't like the mesh idea for birds so small. Thank you also for the info for the heat lamp being swapped out. I'll get an LED bulb tomorrow. At the moment I'm putting the food on paper. When can I start with a feeder?

    • @FoodForThought.
      @FoodForThought.  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      BTW I was super excited. I woke up off a night shift sleep and when I came out of my room I immediately heard the cheeping and I was like a wee kid on Christmas day lol, soooo cool.

    • @ozarkmountaingirl8620
      @ozarkmountaingirl8620 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't know how much an LED will throw down for heat however they dont' need a lot of heat as I mentioned, also if you see any act a little oddly usually you can snap them out of it by returning them to heat. Thats good for older birds as well, heat seems to cure them. you can use a feeder immediately, with just a few crumbs around the feeder they find the feeder and honestly they going to knock it out of the feeder, I use only the bowl part of a feeder for a couple weeks so not as much is wasted, you will see an entire jar of feed on the pad you end up throwing away. after the second week I have small hanging feeders they can't scratch in those so it saves alot of feed. they also can use those nipple feeders as chickens, you just have to find a way to hang them low enough. I feed mine meatbird feed, and I don't grind it, its delicate enough the little one's peck it and it smashes fine. The food you have now will last you a while with the amount of birds you have.

    • @ozarkmountaingirl8620
      @ozarkmountaingirl8620 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      They hop around like crazy they are so fast which always amaze to be so tiny and nearly as fast as a m ouse within a couple hours after they hatch, so finding a food or water container they follow the leader, they see one doing it they copy cat them

    • @ozarkmountaingirl8620
      @ozarkmountaingirl8620 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      oh almost forgot, the mesh is ok, they do fine as you said they have big feet. Its just I'm busy, with all my animals all day everyday and anything that saves me time and helps I like, you being a working guy and your animals, puppy pads will save you some time. I cut mine in half, here its 10 dollars for a box of 50, and cut in half gives me a hundred, thats worth it to me lol

    • @rorystones9872
      @rorystones9872 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I haven’t hatched Muscovy but did a lot of research I ended up choosing khaki Campbell’s due to slightly smaller and they lay heaps of eggs but still good for eating also 28 day to incubate vs 35 for muskovys the most important part is temp then that they get rotated every day preferably 3-4 times a day and as long as the humidity is around 60 percent and rises for the last 3 days of setting the eggs it should be fine also make sure you have a heat lamp for when they hatch

      Food For Thought . Actually, I bought a pkg. of 10 eggs the month prior and put them in a very crude styrofoam cooler with a 25 watt bulb and a small cup of water and FIVE of them turned out to be fertile and in various stages of development! Two of them were fully developed but didn’t hatch. There was too much fluctuation in temperature and humidity. I then filled a Brinsea incubator with 12 eggs and just one of them hatched. I will fill it again tomorrow with eggs I just bought today and see what happens.

  • @12bbyrne
    @12bbyrne 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    here are some tips from my past couple of years experience.
    i started with the same incubator as you and the hatching tray can cause problems with splayed legs in quail because it is more designed for chickens
    you want to put some rough paper towel on the hathing tray or non slip plastic chick mesh on the hatching tray to prevent splayed legs and you also want to put cloth towel (changed every twelve hours) on the bottom of the brooder for the two days because mesh will not give you as good of a success rate because they can still slip on the wire for the first two days and get splayed legs.
    the chances of fixing splayed legs in quail are slim to none and you will either have to put the chicks out of their misery or they will slowly die on thier own.
    also next time try incubating at 37.8 and hatching at 37.3 as the drop in temperature helps the chicks hatch.
    but everything else i do pretty much the same
    but the most important thing to remember is that quail chicks are not as strong as chicken chicks and you will most likely have some losses upto 10% even for the most experienced

    • @FoodForThought.
      @FoodForThought.  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Anna Sherwood I think the easy answer is that you keep adding a small amount of water every few days to keep it steady. don't add too much to have the humidity at 70%. I bought a small syringe to inject the water in the small hole in the top of the incubator.

    I am hatching 30 quail with a Janoel 12 incubator. My humility number said 30, so I raised it to 60 during lock down. Does that number mean 60%? We had one chick die inside on lockdown day 2, should I grab it out?

      If you don't have a mother quail to raise them you can place a feather duster in the bin in a way they can climb into the feathers.
