This controversy didn't exist in the beginning. Honestly seemed like it was started by a lady starting her own curriculum the same year. I haven't checked every book and page they have published personally but I know they say their curriculum is checked by members of multiple churches such as catholic, Baptist, Methodist. It's non-denominational, generally Christian but not specific to a single churches doctrine. So should suit most Bible believing families. 🥰
It really should! I was raised and remain a member of the church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and had I not done a little digging I wouldn’t even have realized the woman who made it was LDS. We use the King James Bible so if people are using that version of the Bible it really shouldn’t be an issue.

We’re not LDS, but after those controversial videos were posted, and when I personally observed the admin from Master Books post some very mean spirited posts on their FB page, I knew which curriculum we would be sticking with. Jenny and her team did a great job making this curriculum usable for every religion and non religious family.

When you hear a company has a diversity panel that sounds off ideology alarm bells. Their latest wonders of energy flip through on YT is featuring a half shaved head lady with blue hair. All of us new homeschool parents, are trying to run away from teachers that look like that. Their ideologies don’t align with ours. So maybe whatever this controversy was about, really was kinda of a warning. 🤷🏻♀️. I’ll be keeping an eye out and will definitely not use their history now.
@@ravenbird3014 well, I guess I'm not offended by diversity panel. I don't care if someone has hair cut or different skin colour. Christians are diverse. We don't all need to look the same way. It's easy to judge inclusion I guess if you don't need it. But I've seen people be excluded because of disability and difference and its needed. Having said that, of course a company which claims to be christian should be christian. And it depends what is meant by diversity and its use and purpose. It could be tokenism, it could mean changes in worldview or just being more representative. But yeh, as always, everything needs discernment. And if you feel the spirit telling you to be careful, it should be listened to.

If the TGTB definition’s of diverse is just the regular definition than I’m OK. My radar has just been alerted with the combination of those two things. Also, I’ve seen YT homeschool influencers trying to justify CRT with a very surface level understanding of the concept and they tied it with TGTB US constitution unit controversy. A second one I’m not really familiar with. It could mean nothing. I’m coming from a very hostile learning environment and my guard is very high.
Thanks for your honest and in-depth review. I've been trying to decide if I should use some of their science units this coming school year. Will start off with their Marine unit...which is actually offered as a free PDF download. That way, even if we don't end up liking it, I have nothing to lose.
I had a 3rd, 5th, and 7th last year and we loved The Good and The Beautiful science units. I didn't laminate any of the pieces but my older kids weren't going to be ruining anything. The extension activities were just right for my 7th grader. We are looking forward to starting with Ecosystems this year!

I’m LDS and if I hadn’t done any digging I would never have known she was LDS too. We use the King James Bible so as long as your family uses that version it will all line up, if your family uses something like the new international version you can still use the verse, just grab your family Bible and read the verse from there instead.

Hi. I feel the units would work well for a co-op. I would suggest reaching out to TGTB customer support to ask about use for in a group setting. I know the material includes copyright for family use. I am not sure of their rules for groups. The units varies in size. I never spend an hour on science, though. Our lessons are more like 30 mins. Since you are teaching for 1 hour, you may be able to get through 1 unit in 8 lessons. You would have to go through more than one lesson over that hour. If you wanted to spread it out over a full semester, you would probably need to supplement by adding extra videos, books, activities, etc. I feel both options are possible. As an FYI, recently, the Good and Beautiful released units in a different format. There is now a teachers' book and a student workbook for many of the units. You pick either print or PDF. They still sell some units like the unit shared in this video. You may want to go to TGTB website and just check out the layout of the new units. I'm using Science for Little Hearts and Hands, it is super cool. But because there is too many religion in science units I'm not considering continuing with them.
If you are looking to do one lesson per week, that is definitely possible. You would though go slower through the materials. We typically do 2 lessons a week. I hope that helps!
Sure! With teaching 3 kids, and having 2 Sonlight HBL cores going, I wanted one subject we could do as a family. Early on, I could see the HBL books reading taking up a large portion of the day. I was concerned about adding more reading and separate lesson instruction time with have 2 Sonlight sciences also going. I liked the one room school house approach to the Good and the Beautiful. I was excited to have one subject I could teach them all together. Additionally, I read and watched reviews of other homeschool moms suggesting Sonlight science jumped around on topics. I liked the idea of digging deep into a science topic, really studying it as a family. We stay on the same unit subject with TGTB for at least 8 weeks. I liked that idea of digging deep. TGTB has worked really well for our family! I did enjoy the science books and info mixed into Sonlght P3/4 and Sonlght p4/5. I have though heard wonderful things about Sonlight science! I just feel TGTB words works better at this time for my family. I hope that helps!!
Hi! TGTB science does not have tests or grading. There are activity pages and printables that you could possibly assign points to, but there is not a grading guide. Here in our home, I do not grade for science. Since my children are in the young elementary ages, my state only requires I show progress for science though samples of work. These are great for young kids say under 3rd grade but I have found them kind of a joke for any kid older than 3rd grade. My daughter blew through a whole years worth in under 6 months. Now I just use the table of contents and maybe an experiment or article and spend a fortune on other books to go with it. I think for the geology unit I spent $200 on geology books. Shes almost done with them. My biggest con is that they aren't enough for some kids. My 8 year old nephew is finishing them really fast. I use them with my 4 and 5 year old nephews and they are perfect. Keep in mind that the lesson extensions for older kids are not really adequate in all cases. I just buy the PDF and put together my own lessons from there. I really hate the layout with the READ TO THE CHILD: type directions. I reads like a script and my daughter cant work through the lessons solo like she prefers. I tend to have to retype a lot and remove the "read to the child" stuff so she can read the stuff herself. Its worth the money to have it as a guide but I feel like it is not enough for a full study for kids 3rd grade and up. My daughter was so excited for the geology one since it advertised extensions for older kids (shes 6th grade) and was utterly disappointed by the simplicity of the extensions. You will probably need multiple books for each unit study. If your kids are older, seek out middle-high school level books. For us, I cant imagine using these a second time. For us it was definitely one and done. They are definitely worth the money just keep in mind that older kids may need a lot more. The Cave book that was suggested for older grade with the geology unit was pricey and my daughter blew through it in about 2 hours. Buy more books that Jenny suggests.

I can though see how it may not fit as well for older students, if you have a more independent learner. I was homeschooled when in high school. I also liked working independently during that time. I used Alpha and Omega Life Pac Science. It is a workbook style science and it was great as I went though most of it on my own. It may be something to look into, if you haven't already. I don't laminate anything! It's not a just at all. And it's very easy to just put the pages in page protectors in a binder.
