    Eric, one of the best things about your videos is the time and care you take to ensure the viewer has no confusions or anything that they do not understand and if you don't cover that in the video itself, really putting it out there for anyone to contact you to get it cleared up. Possibly there are people who have watched pond tutorials by others who have gone past something they don't understand about the installation and after that, they drop the whole subject and cant figure out why. It seems to be one of your hallmarks of your video's and it's great.

    Yes great question. This pond is 11' wide. In the center of the pond we have a light facing directly across the pond from the viewing area away from the viewing area. We installed a light on the waterfall side and a light on the skimmer side and they are aiming in a 45 degree angle towards the middle light. I wish I would have covered that better in the video. I'll know better next time.

    As a former excavator and landscaper I've done several ponds along the lines of these that you do. But watching your videos shows me many areas that I vwas not aware of such as bottom drains. My wife and I are in the process of building a koi pond at our own place and we learn from your videos and apply it to our own project. Thank you!

  • @ThePondDigger
    @ThePondDigger  11 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    You can break the foam loose on the light fixtures. I don't suggest a heavy foaming of the fixtures, just enough to lock them in place so the fish don't knock them around and have them floating around in the pond. You might need to change the light bulbs once a year if you use halogen bulbs but you go much longer if you use LED bulbs. Most of the time I wedge the lights back into place without much worry. If you have monster koi mobbing around in the pond you may need to lower the water level.

    For a whole minute, from 2:15 to 3:15, I had to watch the video over again. With the goat strooling through, I didn't hear a word you said. It was like...
    "OH Goat!"... blah blah blah...MR16 bulb...blah blah... silicone...Goat eating liner...blah blah blah ...wrap wire something...blah...goat jumping on rocks...blah blah blah... "Bye Goat!".
    DAMN! what did he say... rewind.
    Again Eric, a fantastic video series (with or without the goat). I am learning so many tips for my next pond. Thanks

    Typically we will request a dedicated circuit for the pond. Usually a 20 amp GFCI is more than adequate for most backyard ponds. More often than not a quad (4 plug outlet) is more than enough for our pond. This pond will need only two plugs. One for the pump and one for the transformer that will control the lights. So I will ask for a quad in case we need more plugs for add ons in the future.

    Hi Eric,
    I don't know a lots about ponds and have allready learned a lot from your channel. Realy enjoying the videos!
    Now, as a professional elektronic engineer there are a few things I do know. You've shown us to wrap the cable a few times round the light fuxture and that raises some concerns with me... You see, when you have a metal structure (especially a round one) wrapped by currentfeeding cable, what you're doing essentially is making it a huge magnet. Probably not very harmfull for the fish. But your cables are going to become hot, each time you power them on, you'll get power spikes, and your currentphase is going to lean over to the negative side, which is very bad for your powerconsumption...
    Again, love the videos, keep doing what your doing, I hope my information can be of aome use to you aswel.
    Grts, Ruben

    • @ThePondDigger
      @ThePondDigger  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Ruben Veris Thank you for your reply. I know that is true with 110 volt. Is that true with Low Voltage as well?

    • @rubenveris
      @rubenveris 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +ThePondDigger Hi Eric, it's not so much the voltages you have be carefull with, it's mostly the current flowing through the cables. The amount of current is determined by the amount of watts, high wattage means low current, low wattage means high current.
      knowing this, let's say you send 1A through a coil (which is pretty much, 0.35A can be deadly), that coil is going to react with roughly the same strength in the other direction, if you're using alternating currents, that's going to happen 120 times per second (in the US, 100times in europe). This means the cables will be under more stress than under normal conditions and they will wear out more quickly. Also as I mentionned you have the phaseshift, this will cause more stress on the transformer because he is calculated to operate with a nutral phase. And when the stransformer becomes under stress, he will have to work harder, resulting in a higher powerconsumption.
      In this case, I would suggest trying to loop the cable behind some rocks if possible.
      hope my answer is of some use :-)
      grts

    I am working on a spreadsheet to track all the expenses on this project for both the DIY homeowner and for professional installation. Off the top of my head professional pond installation is 6,500 to 7,500. This Helix Life Support Pond Kit will likely come in around 2,500. Rock, Gravel, aquatic plants and terrestrial plants will come in around 2,500. That's off the top of my head so don't hold my feet to the fire on those numbers. :)

    Hi Eric, I love your videos and find them to be very useful. I am renovating my koi pond and would like to install underwater led lights. I have found submersible LED lights that range from $20-$30 to over $120/light. I am looking for bright white LED lights that provide enough light equal to 50 Watt halogen lamp. Not all manufacturers provide information on the lumens output, so it can be very confusing. Also, the number of LEDs vary by type of lamp, but I am not sure that all LEDs provide the same amount of lumens. Can you recommend a good LED lights for koi pond that are not too expensive. Thanks

    Eric, what brand of lights are you using? Everytime I buy pond lights, whether through a builder or a DIY vendor, they end up full of water. They are typically the kind you screw the lens on. Junk, pure junk. I like the idea of having 4 screws to hold the lens tightly to the body. With you being a professsional and all, how often do you need to replace a light with a failed seal. I'm just tired of buying or having junk sold to me. Thanks and keep up the grat work! **subscribed**
