About 7 years ago now, I was lucky enough to pick up a second-hand Starcaster from the 2012 reissues, and it is 100% my go-to guitar, and I'm a complete Strat guy. It's just eminently playable for all kinds of styles.
@@freakybeaky1 I never knew that. I know a lot of people think the Starcaster headstock is weird or ugly but I really like it. I know Bilt uses the shape too.
Fantastic demonstration. I've been deep into the R&B playing of Jimmy James lately (Delvon Lamarr Organ Trio, and the True Loves). I'm seeing the True Loves tomorrow night.
I’d say I’m an “intermediate” guitar player, and I really dig the style of your videos, presentation, and playing! Would love a Steve Cropper video… with a Tele of course
Good idea the older classical music gives people of all walks of life, the opportunity to catch their rhythm, which I think we are all our sorely missing Good work
My all time favourite and wanted guitar, being played by my favorite guitar teacher!! I want a classic vibe Starcaster so badly. Now I want it even more!!
I have that same Starcaster squier. So happy to see a much more accomplished guitarist also enjoying it. Recent subscriber (found you via John Nathan Cordy). Have loved your videos!
Thanks, Eric. To make your muddy pickup brighter, raise up that side a little bit. I always tell people to try adjusting the pickups before replacing them.
Great stuff, thank you Eric! Going to work on a couple of these into my (limited) repertoire. An idea for when you get back around to R&D-centered stuff: Elvis Costello's Alison, which has all those great melodic fills. Would be fun to learn them and also see how they fit with the progression (which is interesting in its own right).
Once again a nice vid that keeps bringing us back to the source. Timely as I'm working on broadening my sonic palette. I am an offset tragic and also have a Squier CV Starcaster in the Natural finish. (eventually going to drop in a set of real Wide Range CuNiFe Pickups)
Eric dude thanks for the lesson and encouraging style totally agree that’s how I approach it learn songs by the main riff when you go back a month later guess what the whole song ain’t so hard after all
A VERY difficult question asked which 5 albums in my life that shaped my journey in guitar...😉 However...without hesitation, had to start with genre of music rather than album that just has to be named my James Brown period. Danced the night away listening to himms new music and the R&B that made one listen and nove😉👍👍 HAD get a guitar and learn how to play that stuff😁👍👍 Great video Eric...A AND important 😎👍👍 😎✌👍❤🖖
Great video Eric! This is a good thing to keep in mind, the techniques are in the songs. 12Tone did a great video recently on "People are Strange" by The Doors. Lots of creative stuff going on in that song, got me thinking I bet you could do a really great deep dive on guitar techniques in The Doors' songs. Take it easy man!
Eric, your videos are getting better and better-and they started out awesome! The concepts are fabulous, the production is exquisite and your spirit is inspirational. I am a better player thanks to your videos. But please, if at all possible, put tabs up on the screen that show every single note. In this video, there were parts that would have been a lot easier to understand if there were tabs to show exactly what to play…Otherwise, you are my favorite…well, #2-behind the guy that puts up tabs. ;P
Great playing as always! Gonna work on these tonight. That starcaster is killer. I can’t find the black ones anywhere, but that one looks great. I modded one of the squier 40th anniversary satin double bound teles, and it’s a great guitar.
Awesome video! I love the idea of having a repertoire that you constantly play to warm up! Lately mines been the better part of Shine on You Crazy Diamond. That song is a chill lead guitar masterclass! Have you tried the classic vibe custom 60s telecaster? I see it and immediately think of Gilmour on animals!
You need to get one of those phone mounts that attach to the neck, Eric. That way, you won't have to be a contortionist to illustrate a certain pick angle.
Really love your teaching style man. I truly appreciate you doing this stuff!!! Do you have a pedal to switch cameras?? If so, brilliant my brother!! Keep it funky!!!😊
would love to see a lesson on cross picking , i recently watched a vid with Family Strings ( Billy Strings and His Dad) wow that picking was crazy and all on acoustics too. Peace !
Hey Eric, you say in the description that the pickups in your Mustang are custom rewinds. Do you know any of the specs for them? Magnets, DCR, etc? They sound gorgeous 😍
This is how I feel on all your videos: Inspired by your great teaching,..discouraged by your sublime playing. :)
Time spent with Eric is always time spent well. Always.
“The skills are in the songs”. So much more satisfying. Great lesson and song choices.
that Mustang tone is one of the best i've ever heard omg
Eric, living proof that the Tone is not in the wood ... It is in the soul and every fiber of your (his) body. 🧐
Thank you as always.

Ooh, the Starcaster. I am a fan, too. Very comfortable guitar to play.
Yeah, it's a ES-335 for the Fender player. Maple board, offset body, funky headstock. A perfect semi-hollow guitar for me!
@@freakybeaky1 I never knew that. I know a lot of people think the Starcaster headstock is weird or ugly but I really like it. I know Bilt uses the shape too.
@@bumblefritzI like it too, it looks like a Bowie knife imo.
Always associate Starcasters with Johnny Greenwood
and I bet that Starcaster is all stock too, Eric could play a broomstick and make it sound freakin' great, love this guy, Peace !
Fantastic demonstration. I've been deep into the R&B playing of Jimmy James lately (Delvon Lamarr Organ Trio, and the True Loves). I'm seeing the True Loves tomorrow night.
That video of the KEXP warmup set with the trio is great!

I want to second just how satisfying it is to learn pretty much any Curtis Mayfield riffs. It’s an art unto itself.
Thank you, Eric 🙏🏻
Love the classic soul and R&B ...
✌️🍕🤍
Good idea the older classical music gives people of all walks of life, the opportunity to catch their rhythm, which I think we are all our sorely missing Good work
Totally agree with this method of going back to them songs that keep you playing
My all time favourite and wanted guitar, being played by my favorite guitar teacher!! I want a classic vibe Starcaster so badly. Now I want it even more!!
Very nice, and accessible. A classic R&B licks course would be a great TrueFire course. Thanks Eric.
Eric, you funky mutha, have a lovely weekend!
R&B is so underrated within the guitar community
Love how yo give a demo at the start, no time wasted, ty
I have that same Starcaster squier. So happy to see a much more accomplished guitarist also enjoying it. Recent subscriber (found you via John Nathan Cordy). Have loved your videos!
Man, what a cool lesson. Can't wait to try out some of these riffs. I also loved how the Starcaster glowed when the light hit it.
hellllll yea bro comming out with the banger episode. Ima be on these backing tracks for a minute
This was such an inspiring lesson, kind of broke me out of a rut. I truly love your channel
HOLY SH*TS this is a great lesson just when I think your lessons couldn't get any better I'm again blown away again , damn :)
This is absolutely the lesson I needed today. Thank you!
Thanks, Eric. To make your muddy pickup brighter, raise up that side a little bit. I always tell people to try adjusting the pickups before replacing them.
great lesson and selection of tunes
Dusky Amps are made in my hometown!!! Super cool !!
Eric seems v laid back and cool and makes the guitar and music fun and accessible ❤😂🎉😊
Bet you're glad you got that walnut Starcaster before that finish was discontinued. ;) Beautiful guitar. Congrats on the success of your channel.
Love your tutorials
Such good communication. Straight to the point, no rambling on about what he ate for breakfast 😂😂😂
Thanks! I always try to get right to the point!
Thank you Eric! Love your teaching style, your tone and your guitars!
Thanks Eric. Blessed to have you around (and omg also for free)

Thank you, I got inspired to play guitar for many hours while watching your video :)
Very, very good advice and the great Bruce Lee quote really nails it.
Fantastic lesson, great playing and great guitars ! The work you’ve put into this video is extremely impressive and very enjoyable to watch.
I absolutely loved this lesson, thank you very much!❤🎸
That is some seriously tasty stuff 🧁
Simple and eloquent music. Thanks!
You're a legend, Eric.
Another great one. Thanks, Eric.

That is a gorg Squier Starcaster. Nice black finish.
Like the songs, your playing is great and entertaining.
Thank you brother. Great gift to us this is.
Keeping those splendid vibes clean, man. I dig it. I love that 70's Gb/Ab kinda sus chord, so classy.
What a great lesson.

That Starcaster is a cool guitar .
Thanks again for a great lesson Uncle Eric. I really dig your style, language and methodology. I got a new go to guy!
Clean, tight play. Nice!

Absolutely fantastic have a good weekend Eric also today is my friends birthday ❤😊
Boz Scaggs Jo Jo is really good example for R&B groove...love playing it. And of course Steely Dan's Josie
Bill Withers 'Use Me' 🤌 . Such a solid track.
Thanks for all you do man!
Friday joy, courtesy yet again from Mr. Haugen! Kindness, Guitar, and Pizza! Let's go!

Glad the algorithm finally revealed your channel to me. Don’t know what took it so long. 🍕🍕🎸🎸
Thanks for the side pick rhythm strum trick!
Beautiful Starcaster. I totally agree. Excellent lesson, how about some Sly? Thank you.
Ho yes, thank you Eric, cangrats on your 200k+
Damn big bro just saw crossed 200k you on that grind dude hell yea
What fun. Love it Eric! Thank you!
U r great. Thank you.
Hey Eric, sublime as always. Can we get a short of that Bill Withers solo at the end please?
That P Curtis riff reminded me of Jeff Beck on People Get Ready. Really pretty.
Thanks Eric 👍🏼
Great video. Thank you
I do not fear the guitar player that practices the riff once. I fear Eric Haugen! 😁😁
Noted your appreciation of Curtis Mayfield. One of the greatly under-rated masters. Respect!
like this dude a lot.
You need to get one of those phone mounts that attach to the neck, Eric. That way, you won't have to be a contortionist to illustrate a certain pick angle.
Great thanks Eric
Lovely!
Thanks!
Thanks paul!

Hey Eric, you say in the description that the pickups in your Mustang are custom rewinds. Do you know any of the specs for them? Magnets, DCR, etc? They sound gorgeous 😍
Yeah man ! Great lesson on the basic simplicity of rhythm guitar , less is always more till it’s not 😅
