    Great vid. I owned a Snap-On box for 20 years when I was a marine (boat) mechanic. I liked it, but I always thought I over-paid for it for what it did. (Hold and lock up tools.)
    After I retired, I sold the Snap-On box and bought a US General set up for my home shop. I really like it, and it cost 1/4 of what I paid for my Snap-On box and does the same job.

      Snap on boxes are definitely good, but the prices they charge now are even more crazy. I will say as much as I made fun of the hf icon tool boxes when they came out) after seeing them in the stores (and talking with people who own them) they are quite a deal. They equal snap on quality (for snap ons standard box) at 1/3rd of the price. I get it snap on is American made, but it’s not worth 3-4k more to me for just tool storage. Quality tools are often worth the extra money though 😀.

    That drawer opening system with the slide to the side to open anywhere on the drawer’s length is such a great quality of life upgrade.

      You’re not kidding. I didn’t think it would be that big of a deal but after having used the gen 3 for a couple days I am legitimately less frustrated. That other system sucked, I just didn’t realize how bad lol.

    I just ordered my grey 56' yesterday with the 20% coupon they have this weekend. Went back today and ordered the hutch also with the coupon. Yours is gorgeous and I hope mine turns out as good!

      I lucked out because the local harbor freight was saying the middle of Jan for a grey one. I ended up deciding on the blue one and called the stores until I found one that had it. I drove there and asked about it and they said which color did I want because they had grey and blue. I got excited and said the grey one, that’s what I really wanted, and I was told nobody had one. So I managed to get one without waiting over a month. Honestly the grey and black is perfect. It not only matches my truck, but it looks good with any color welder on top lol. You won’t be disappointed.

      @@makingmistakeswithgreg Great luck (combined with a bit of work) there for sure. I've done the HF hunt for stock before myself. I've waited a long time for this so as much as I'd like to have it now, I'm good with waiting another month or so.

    I waited for years to find a reasonable priced box a good one and they are definitely worth the price tag and keep their resale value pretty good.

      The resale is definitely solid compared to the local big box store units.

    Just ordered one today with the tool chest also. I think the 56” will be perfect for my home garage. I used my inside track club for 20% off coupon on each piece. The cashier offered to ring them up separately so I could get the 20% on both items. Thats a nice offer and saved me $170 on the bottom roller cabinet and an additional $120 off the tool chest. All in with tax I was out the door for $1,283.98. Seems like an incredible value to me. This is just for my home garage should last the remainder of my life and into my sons should he want it some day. Seems like a great box and a lot of value for the money. Mine won’t arrive until mid January and that’s fine by me allows me time to clear some space in my garage for it. Still trying to figure out how I’m going to stack the almost 300 lb tool chest on top of the roller cabinet. I’m thinking slide it off the lift gate of my delivery truck I borrow from work or use a duct jack to get just the right height. I need to make sure our duct jack at work is rated for the weight of the tool chest. My only other option is stack it at work using the forklift then transport it home and unload with the lift gate. Total weight though empty is 631 lbs once assembled.

      Nice score. No joke the previous cabinet set I had (gen 2 56 top and bottom) is the closest I have been to getting hurt moving something lol. I had to take them down stairs and I almost got crushed lol. I have moved safes and all sorts of heavy stuff, the box was the worst. I ended up taking the gen 3 off my truck with a chainfall hoist off a beam, if it wasn’t for that I don’t know how I would have done it. They are heavy.

    Nice pickup Greg. Those boxes have came a long way over the years. When I was young I had a nice 56” yellow snap on top and bottom and it was one of my biggest regret purchases. For what I paid I couldn’t justify as time went on. I used it daily when I did bodywork, but I felt like I should have done without it

      Yeah a good box is a investment, but its hard to justify the prices today. I am big on buying used stuff but no way I was going to spend 4-6k for a used snap on 56 lol.

      I found out harbor freight has the same box but in a slightly smaller width, that just came out. I have not seen them in person, but they are 42” and 27in. The 42 is under 500$.

    Considering what you are using it for I would add outlets on the side or top for the welders, like a 4 gang 120 and a 240 to make it easier to have the power you need.

    Damn, I thought this was Making Mistakes with Greg, not S*** I Shouldn't Buy! Now there's another channel I can get behind! Anyways, I've noticed the exact same thing in the used market for tool boxes, I've been buying used Craftsman, Huskies and Waterloos just to organize all the crap I have in storage totes, cardboard boxes and cabinets. Maybe when I get them all organized I'll be on the hunt for something more one and done. Nice choice

    • @makingmistakeswithgreg
      @makingmistakeswithgreg  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Waterloos always treated me good, but nobody sells them anymore. My understanding was they produced a ton of the boxes as a private label. They might still make the boxes for craftsman. Honestly I miss the old craftsman stuff too.

    Husky boxes are excellent. I have 3 of them, and my 72" 18 drawer chest is a tank. Best of all, none of them were dented.

    I have three of their gen 2 boxes. The smaller 26” models, and a 48” Craftsman with top box I bought way back in the early 1980s. All great. The only thing I don’t like about the gen 3 is the deep top drawer. As a machinist and fabricator, I keep metrology tools in the top draws, or lathe holders, with either milling bits in the next one down, then tapping. The bigger drawers have larger tooling. I don’t know what purpose is served with the bigger drawer on the top, considering we’re giving up a drawer. So 7 instead of 8. I understand that allows them to claim more cubic inches and it’s cheaper to have one large drawer instead of two smaller ones. I’ve been thinking of getting another one, but I’m trying to figure out how I would arrange things with this, and so far, I can’t. Deeper drawers are a waste of space often as you can’t really use all the height.

    • @makingmistakeswithgreg
      @makingmistakeswithgreg  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The deep top drawer is a bit deep for me as well. I have all my micrometers, machinist levels, and other precision measuring tools in the top right of the top drawer and you’re 100% right it would be better if it was thinner.

      @@makingmistakeswithgreg I believe it's mostly for sockets to put in standing up. Saves a ton of room. Allows for organizers and taller sockets. For me, it works a lot better. However, if you want thinner drawers at the top, you may be able to move your drawers around.

    Making mistakes with Greg.. Nice looking toolbox there. I have a Matco toolbox, US General full bank cart and a small Husky toolbox and they are full. I need to get me another one but I can't decide if I want another US General full bank cart or one of their bigger boxes like the 56" one.

      @makingmistakeswithgreg  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      The 56 box for 750$ is hard to beat. I do like their cart too. You could split the difference and go with the new 42” cart. It’s the same price as the full bank.

      So I fall under the category of “it’s complex” lol. I work a job as a municipal waste water plant operator, however as of Jan I am going into machine repair. I have also ran a side hustle business of repair work for 5-6 years. Moving into the new year I will be starting a LLC and basically working 3 full time jobs. Machine repair for a municipality, welding repair for myself, and TH-cam/education channel. I am in the process of finding a suitable commercial building to start the company. There is nothing available for sale right now so it’s a waiting game.
      Edit: also, I will be doing videos on how I started a LLC, how I price jobs, and everything about having a side hustle to make extra money. Those will probably start in February.

    Can anyone tell me, how do the wheels/casters compare to the series 2?

    • @makingmistakeswithgreg
      @makingmistakeswithgreg  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      So on the 56in box I would say they are identical, I owned both the gen 2 and 3. They are very strong and it wheels around nicely. Far better casters and strength of where they mount than any of the big box store (Home Depot) boxes. The 72in has a different caster setup that will probably roll over cracks better (it has springs) however that box also weighs a lot more and could use bigger casters.

      So I managed to get one in stock at a local HF. I was told by the first store I went to that orders would take about a month to get.
