- The remaining 3 semifinalists (Andre, Jennifer and Josh) are excited when the 3 judges introduce guest judge Tessa Virtue (an Olympic ice dancer and gold medalist) to the judging panel as the special guest star. Tessa explains the theme of this last mystery box challenge of the season. The 3 semifinalists are tasked with creating a stunningly elevated, dramatic dish with the theme of “Fire and Ice” using molecular gastronomy to elevate their plating to artistically inventive and innovative heights.

This mystery box challenge was probably the best one in MC Canada.The idea for the challenge itself is interesting and vague, leaving a lot of room for creativity, the remaining contestants are fun to watch and all three meals are very beautiful.

Yeah I agree especially with the contestants cause I feel like these three are one of the best top 3 in Mc Canada.
I hope they have more challenges like this in the future that are more conceptual. Often times it's not restricting what the chefs can do but rather giving them full creative freedom that is the challenge.

How do they do the judging without the dishes losing their ideal temperature when theyre waiting?
They don't. At least usually for most challenges they actually give the contestants extra time at the end of the challenge to clean up presentation, so by the time things get tasted, its usually cold. Most of the actual tasting while its good is done mid challenge. I heard this from an old contestant who didn't sign the non disclosure contract online.
They make a second dish for tasting
I guess they just kind of take it into account in the judging. Getting all those shots probably takes a bit of time.
They taste throughout the challenge but also at the end
Usually the judges taste these homecooks' dishes when cooking and retasted the dish in a way smaller portion right after the time ran out. The mechanism's slightly different each country. Brazil has the contestants create two identical dishes, one for tasting.
Can we all acknowledge the fact that all three dishes look like final round dishes and something that Masterchef USA could never make 😵

They have a similar challenge during MasterChef Australia: Back to Win called the hot and cold immunity challenge, where they have to make a hot dish featuring a cold element. Reynold made a dessert, but it was underwhelming.
yes, but mostly as a dessert. These guys killed it in the savory side, which Reynold actually kinda has a weak spot in.

Dulse has an interesting flavor. Instead of table salt, in my home we use a blend of sea salt with dulse and kelp flakes. It adds nutrients to whatever I sprinkle it on, and it's amazing on things like hot buttered popcorn.

It's because his duck didn't have the seared colour that the judges wanted. All 3 dishes were so perfect that that's literally the only way they could choose who to send home. I think if his duck was better, Andre would've actually been sent home.

If you have been watching the Masterchef channels a while you'll realize they repost every clip about every 6 months. There are some I've seen 5-6 times all with different titles but the same clip. Same with whoever runs Gordon Ramsey's channels.
