    For those of you who have a class with the following questions:
    1) What are the four (4) families of musical instruments?
    |--> woodwinds, brass, strings and percussion.
    2) How do the percussion instruments produce sound? Name 3 ways.
    |--> By hitting, shaking or scraping.

    shouldn't keyboards be in the family of hammered strings alongside different types of hammered dulcimers and cimbaloms?

    • @callmeswivelhips8229
      @callmeswivelhips8229 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The piano is a percussion instrument as far as I'm concerned. A harpsichord is a string instrument and the keyboard is an electric instrument. I really don't think "keyboard" is legitimate as a distinct instrument group.

    The person who made the video already responded to this question, but as a pianist, I was taught that the piano was both a string and percussive instrument. :)

    Isn't the french horn actually a woodwind instrument? Because everything that I have heard and read says that the french horn is not brass.

    • @user-zc9si7ls9i
      @user-zc9si7ls9i 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Caters Carrots The French Horn is a brass instrument. It uses buzzing to produce sound. What you probably found is that it is used in the woodwind quintet. But nevertheless, it is definitely a brass instrument. The woodwind quintet consists of a flute, clarinet, oboe, bassoon and horn. The horn is brass while the other 4 are all woodwind.

    well this is good but the video title misleads, classes or categories are different from families eg trumpet and saxophone are classified or categorized as aerophones. they belong to the Brass family.

    • @armedandvirtuous973
      @armedandvirtuous973 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      saxophone is a woodwind, because a vibrating reed produces the sound. Both brass and woodwind are aerophones, they are divided by what vibrates: a reed or the vibrating of lips.

      the piano from inside has strings

    • @callmeswivelhips8229
      @callmeswivelhips8229 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      A piano has strings inside that are struck by a hammer. In fact, if you open a grand piano and watch the action of the keys on the inside, you can watch the hammers strike the strings. I've never heard of mallet instruments, but I suppose that would be accurate.
      A harpsichord is a string instrument because a harpsichord plucks the strings rather than strike them with a hammer. So a harpsichord is the string version of a piano.

    I am still confused. Why is there 2 ways of classification: the hornbostel sachs ( e.g. aerophones, chordophones)
    and muscial families (e.g. brass, woodwind)????which one to follow?their difference? Help!

  • @eligibbons2155
    @eligibbons2155 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Let's be honest though, the piano shouldn't be in rhythm/percussion sections. I know they don't pluck, bow or strum their strings, but hitting them with a hammer should still be included

    • @eligibbons2155
      @eligibbons2155 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I know the piano is difficult to classify by sound since nothing else really sounds like it, but, considering it uses strings to make a sound, it should be classified as a string instrument. While it can obviously play both roles, I think that's a good enough reason to place it in the strings rather than the percussion section, for the sake of consistency.

    • @catalystdrums123
      @catalystdrums123 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@eligibbons2155 How the sound is produced is more relevant than what materials are vibrating to make the sound. For example, many percussion instruments are made of brass, but they are struck. We wouldn't call a cymbal a brass instrument because it is struck to produce the sound. In some cases, a fifth category is added to include "keyboard" instruments because of how hard they are to categorize otherwise. Conversely a flute is completely made of metal, but it is still a woodwind because the sound is produced by an opening vibrating.
