  • An automatic landing system is necessary in scenarios where the pilot's visual reference to the runway is obscured by weather or when no pilot is present to establish a landing slope. The landing system is guided by a radio transmitter that commands a desired glide path angle. The aircraft follows the glide path, but the descent rate must be reduced for a safe landing with a flare trajectory initiated at a specified altitude. This requires flight control, including simultaneous pitch and airspeed control systems. The switch from glide path to flare path must occur with minimal transients. Lessons taught in this section are applicable to other aircraft flight control scenarios. This is the first video in a series on landing guidance and control.
