  • The objective of the flare path is to reduce aircraft rate of descent for a safe touchdown. In this lesson, an exponential rate of descent model is derived and incorporated in a flare path control loop as part of an automatic landing system. Lesson topics include the development of the closed loop airspeed and pitch controlled aircraft, altitude modeling, flare path control development, and simulation. Throughout control architecture development, frequency domain block diagrams are paired with their linear state space form. The closed loop flare path is simulated for a transport aircraft transitioning from the glide path at 40ft. The flare path control system is shown effective at reducing the rate of descent for safe touchdown.

Great videos. Out of interest why are you keeping the airspeed constant during the flare? Typically the throttles are retarded and airspeed bled off during the flare in addition to lowering the descent rate.

Hello, it was an assumption from a textbook that carried over. In the future, when tested in the longitudinal nonlinear simulation I'll include more realistic throttle commands during landing. Thank you for the question

@@LearnGandC when I originally commented I also included a web link to some landing performance tests I did with JSBSim and some reference info from Airbus manuals regarding landing performance in terms of how much airspeed is typically bled off etc. But the comments disappeared. Maybe they're waiting moderation by you?

I looked and didn't see anything. Could you please send it to btdgnc@gmail.com? I appreciate it.
